๐Ÿ’ธ Being Poor in the Richest Country on Earth ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

ANALYSIS

Once upon a time, the BBC’s Panorama used to beย the current affairs programme to watch. Since its revamp it has largely disappointed. Last night though was an exception – and what an exception.

America has suffered under the recession, which many commentators are comparing to the Great Depression of the 30s.

If what was shown last night was anything to go by, then those voices may not be wrong – with one million children homeless, coming from by and large from the kind of families the American dream is all about, and politicians largely unable and often unwilling to do anything concrete right nowย to prevent the communities of homeless people springing up literally down the road, the poor in the richest countryย on earth on are going to have a fight on their hands, especially since Republicans like Mitt Romney are open admirers of our own Margaret Thatcher and Newt Gringichย are arguing for a returnย toย child labour.

Strangely enough, not one of those condemning the poor for being a burden on the state are looking at the real reason for the astronomicalย budget deficit – quoted in the programme as one trillion dollars, but it is much, muchย larger than that – namely the cost of imperial overstretch.

War with Iran

ANALYSIS – The correspondent on Newsnight last night ended his analysisย of theย latest developmentย in the Iran,ย namely the assassination of another of her nuclear scientistsย asย he left work in Teheran, withย an admission that it is probably inevitable that there will be a war with Iran in some form, perhaps atย the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran would probably argue that the war had already begun a long time ago,ย beginning with George Bush’s speech and the slow trickle of attacks, including cyber terrorism and the continued violations of her sovereignty that the latest killing is.

Last week, the Iranian navy threatened to shut of the Strait of Hormuz in response to the latest round of US sponsored sanctions aimed at Iranian banks amongst others.

The threat was accompanied with a clear statement – that Iran was the undisputed power of the Gulf region.

If this will be lead to war then a war with China may be around in the not too distant future.

China – who received a visit from the US yesterday in an effort to get her to stop buying oil from Iran – has recently complained about America’s build up in Asia.

Will a war in the Strait of Hormuz be followed by war in the South China Sea?

Those who favour such actions may also want to take a look at a video that has been on played onย television screens today – namely of 4 soldiers urinating over three bodies.

War dehumanises all who take part in it, it is not glorious and its effects last forever.

The Soviet Union

With the twentieth anniversary of the collapse of the Soviet Union approaching, many have been offering their thoughts as to how this superpower met her end, how was it that on Christmas Day 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev appeared on television to tell his people that he had resigned as their president.

A British ambassador for Moscow, from 1988 to 1992, charted her decline from the 1960s, she was falling behindย to her rival and had to rely on high oil prices for the next 15 years, Rodric Braithwaite observed in the Financial Times.

Many Russians from that period would tell you that things weren’t as bad as the cold war propaganda showed, that the food queues broadcast in the West could easily have been replaced byย pictures of theย dole queues and people sleeping in the streets on Washington, London and Paris.

Over the last ten years, Islamists have argued that the defeat at Afghanistan was the beginning of the end of the empire that denied the existence of God.

For an empire built on fear, admitting defeat was a disaster, however, the Soviet Union’s decision to put 150,000 troops into Kabul was perhaps the first sign that something was wrongย at the Kremlin.

Gorbachev himself has been quoted as saying that he felt that things could not continue in the way that they had before he came to power.

I have always believed that the Soviet Union never recovered from the carnage of the Second World War, for on the face of it she wasย equally matched with the United States of America, truth was her position as number one had come at a horrendous cost, millions of young men had given their lives for the protection of mother Russia.

Whilst industries and infrastructures can be replaced, human beings despite whatย Cold War propaganda said of the Soviet worker,ย are not machines, theyย are just flesh and blood, and in that they are unique.

And so, much to the delight of his enemies, the Great Leader has died. Those enemies – namely the Western nations – are hailing this as a step forward, a new opportunity, and already Japan and South Korea have promised to work together in solving the problem of the north.

The modern history of this reclusive state is born of two events, namely the Korean war and the war on terror.

Both were a result of Great Power interference.

The first was sparked by a north attempting to reunite a nation that had been carved up by imperial Japan. In the process, she drew the fury of the new master of the Pacific, the United States of America.

When there was nothing else to bomb the Americans destroyed bridges in an effort to bring this stubborn little nation of Asians to their knees.

Eventually,  the frontier that we now recognise was marked out – at huge human cost.

And the second event was that speech by George Bush after those terrorist outrages, where he spoke of an axis of evil – Iraq, Iran and north Korea.

A year before, the north was in talks abouth reuniting with the south, and western diplomats found themselves very welcome, as this reclusive state – perhaps encouraged by China – had begun the process of opening up.

Unlike Libya and Iraq, North Korea never gave up her weapons programme, instead she testfired a nuclear bomb as a warning to anyone who may think of invading her yet again.

North Korea may be mad and many other things, but she can say that at the time of the death of the Great Leader, she and her people had maintained their independence.

Can the same thing be said of Japan and South Korea?

Get Tougher on Iran, says Richard Perle

14 Wednesday Dec 2011

One of the key figures of the Bush administration, and perhaps its strongest advocate for war in Iraq- apart from Dick Cheney and George Bush himself – has appeared on RussiaToday to push for a stronger American response to Iran.

What Richard Perle said of the need to combat the threat of a nuclear armed Iran is not surprising – given his recent history – however what was more telling were his admissions about other issues. He did admit that if a country had an atom bomb – say North Korea – the US would not attack it, though he went on to quantify that by adding that Kim Jong’s regime would also inflict immense damage on the South in any conflict.

As far as he was concerned, Iraq was a threat that had to be taken out, where America got it wrong was occupying the country which had then allowed an insurgency to develop.

He believed that America was not the only nation to be hated in the Muslim world, there was also Russia and the UK, and that the West was only defending itself in taking the actions it has done so far.

There was, he believed a struggle between people who wanted to impose their way of life on everyone and us.

He did not believe that was what America was doing.

America did not feel superior but rather proud of its way of life.

He was asked about one American mother who had lost her son in the Iraq war, to which he said he was sorry, however, there was no indication of any awareness that the invasion of Iraq had cost one million civilian lives, with millions more unable to return to their country for fear of the violence that that invasion had unleashed.

In fact, the well spoken Mr Perle gives the impression that he sleeps very easily at night.

Nato Airstrike kills 24 Pakistani Soldiers

Was the latest incident involving Pakistan and her troubled alliance with the United States of America the result of a Nato emboldened by her success in Libya?

There are many – not just Pakistan’s public – who believe so.

The attack on a border post was, according to Pakistan, unprovoked and she reserves the right to hit back at a time of her choosing.

Nato’s response has not been very convincing for someone who has effectively declared warย on her hitherto ally.

She, like America believes the root of her troublesย in Afghanistan lie in Islamabad and more precisely with the Pakistan secret service, the ISI.

The Western allies are wrong –ย the Taliban are fueled by resentment at foreign occupation of theirย country, how else can they call on people to fight and die for them?

So far,ย Pakistan’s weak civilian government has cut supply lines to nato – hardly a problem now since most of what they need comes through Uzbekistan -andย given the US fifteen days to leave a base used to launch drone strikes.

Unfortunately, this will not be enough –ย Pakistan’s military know that there is a perception that they have been seen to beย weak, and that a clear demonstration may be neededย to warn off Nato, and to more importantly appease herย very angry public.

Hilary Clinton jumps for joy (after hearing Colonel Gaddafi has been killed)

ANALYSIS – It is said that the Secretary of State was delighted at the news of Colonel Gaddafi’s death, indeed a tape of her chanting in joy was put out.

For some reason, it always comes as a surprise when a woman reacts to death in this way. It shouldn’t – one only has to think of ‘Condy’ Rice, Tipvi Livni and our own Margaret Thatcher to know that the gentler sex can be as blood thirsty as their male counterparts.

I wonder if she would have chewed his liver, like Hind did after theย defeat of the Prophet’s army at the Battle of Uhud. Then, the vengeful lady, ordered her slave to cut out her enemy’s chest and chewed the liver of the man famed for being the Prophet’s protector, Hamza.

I wonder also if Shakespeare was aware ofย Hind when he created Lady Macbeth.
