How many are really dying in the Afghan War?

31 Thursday Mar 2011

Tags

Afghanistan, Afghanistan War, PressTV, UK

Apparently, the British government is attempting to shut down Iranian-owned Press Tv. It continues however, to broadcast on television and on its website, where I first stumbled on its videos because PressTv is actually covering the civilian death toll of the Afghan conflict. Video postings include the slaughter of a family at marriage ceremony in Farah province by a multi-ton bomb dropped by Nato by mistake and the attempt by the Taliban to storm Kabul last summer, which is particularly memorable because the reporter on the scene was virtually thrown off his feet by the impact of the gunfire. The reporter was fine and still continues to  file reports within minutes of an incident in this war torn country to PressToday which still broadcasts on television and the internet. www.presstv.ir

Is America losing the propaganda war to Russia Today

31 Thursday Mar 2011

Someone’s not happy

If state owned RussiaToday are to be believed they get many million hits on their website every day. Their site which has featured some great video postings including the anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, as well as the now legendary Max Keisar who has been fated by many internet fans including Greek bloggers who wanted to make him their boss, is according to Russia Today being targeted by no less a person as Hilary Clinton. The US Secretary of State believes that the America is losing all the powerful propaganda war to amongst others, Russia, China and Iran.

The internet and how to use it to get your own way is still an area that is baffling media barons and great powers alike.

Video postings if they are compulsive viewing like Max Keisar will always attract fans, whether the organisations promoting him, which also includes Iran’s PressTV, will find their point of view becoming the dominant voice in this arena of many voices is another thing though.

The Shoe Thrower’s Index

Revolutions start from this?
If like me you are following unfolding events in the Arab world with a mixture of astonishment and some apprehension about the future you may want to look at The Economist’s video graph to see where the next revolution could occur. Dubbed the Shoethrower’s Index, after one Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at an outgoing American President who had ordered an invasion of his country, the index looks at a number of factors, including youth unemployment, poverty and inequalities between rich and poor. The results contain no surprises but watch out for Mauritania, which is country that has not received much attention over here.

Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch’s Latest Gamble?

Should you charge for online content, whether it is news stories or the attached video that always accompany them? Clearly, Rupert Murdoch, pioneer or power mad media magnate – take your pick – believes so. He is currently attempting to convince The Times and The Sunday Times readers to pay fee, however little, to get the chance to visit the website that hosts these world famous titles. One media owner who be keenly monitoring his progress will be the Guardian, whose combination of articles and videos have resulted in a million hits a day. Murdoch’s latest move reminded me of a couple of things that his former employees said of him – one that he is always prepared to take risks, apparently he bet the bank when he launched Sky TV, and the other that he will never be retiring, when he goes it will be with his boots on, something that even his detractors will have to admit is impressive.

US Secretary of State backs protestors in Iran

Initial video pictures to emerge from Iran show some demonstrators taking to the streets of Tehran to call for the overthrow of the ruling government. These images which show tens rather hundreds of demonstrators have been posted on Youtube and have been seized upon by Hilary Clinton, who is arguing that this is latest episode in the wave of popular protests to have gripped the Middle East, and which has already seen the downfall of two tyrants, including that of Hosni Mubarak. The problem with these claims is that the government of Iran always manages to counter any such video images with their own counter demonstrations which are invariably far greater in size by a considerable amount. For the moment, it would be safe to say that based available online video footage, Hilary Clinton’s wishes may just be that, a wish, a shot in the dark. And further to this, available footage also reveals the limits of such citizen journalism, which whilst having its place in the online world is also severely hampered because unlike a work of journalism it can not be verified and thus can be called into question. One video shows a man who we believe may be a member of the secret police dressed in civilian clothes being attacked by a mob. No body can definitely say that this man was what is being claimed in the video. All we can see is a man being attacked by a crowd.

Russia’s Bin Laden?

ANALYSIS

Doku Umarov has clamed responsibility for the bomb attack at a Moscow airport, which killed 102 people and injured hundreds more. Appearing on a video, dressed in combat gear and a thick set beard, his finger pointing outwards, he appears to have all the right qualifications to be the Bin Laden of Russia, which is why it was strange to see state-run Russia Today rubbishing his claims. One theory being discussed included the terrorist raising his profile so he can ensure a constant flow of money from those sympathetic to his cause. Many theories are on the table, however, no one has looked at the actions of Russia’s military in the Caucasus. The people of these lands have opposed Russia’s iron fisted rule ever since the armies of the Czar marched in at 1789, following the defeat of Ottoman arms. Then a figure emerged who captured the spirit of resistance to armies that were the original ethnic cleansers. Imam Shamyl looked remarkably like Doku himself, though unlike today’s warriors he never attacked civilians, nor did he have the advantage of using video online to intimidate and harass his sworn enemy. If the internet is going to come of its own, surely it will the power of the image that will bring this about. During the Balkan wars of the 1980s and 1990s, one journalist’s report forever altered the West’s perception of that conflict. Her shots of starving Muslim men behind barbed wire, against the words, “The Serbs say that this is not a concentration camp”, made it unacceptable for a regular army to commit acts of ethnic cleansing in Europe. If perception of the conflict in Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia is to alter then video images of men like Doku Umarov need to be replaced by the faces of the countless victims that have suffered at the hands of Russia’s brutal occupation. Then, of course, the appearance of such videos online would lead to a true internet revolution.
