ANALYSIS – RT which was formerly known as RussiaToday has become the focus of considerable attention here in Britain and across the Atlantic because it’s critics say the channel is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Vladimir Putin. Those critics include The Guardian newspaper which claims to champion free speech, as well as the usual suspects at Fox News. OFCOM which took Iranian owned PressTV off the air here has criticised RT for its lack of balance particularly over its coverage of Ukraine which the channel has unsuccessfully attempted to portray as a battle against the facists and Nazis of Kiev, in much as same way as it attempted to show the former president of Georgia to be a genocidal maniac. RT offers a different point of view – it has at least two clear stars in its schedule, namely Max Keiser and Peter Lavelle’s Cross Talk programme – and sometimes scores hits for instance it recently showed the civilian toll of Saudi Arabia’s air strikes in Yemen, which al Jazeera has been claiming to be a largely ‘clean’ war. Of course RT is a propaganda channel it may deny this but it comes across as such on air and in its content, and you also get the impression that it is impossible to criticise the President of Russia or Russia generally – but that shouldn’t  mean it being removed off air. The viewer gets another take on the world and should be allowed to make their own judgment as to whether what they are seeing and hearing has some merit or is just a state’s propaganda.  Any judgements like those that resulted in the removal of PressTV must take into account this broader picture, that RT offers a point of view from a part of the world that is still misunderstood and because of various reasons will continue to play a major part in future world affairs.

Iranian Opposition Channel launched from London

TEMPLATE REPORT

Raha, which is Persian for ‘to free’ will begin its daily broadcast at 1630 GMT with a 30-minute news bulletin followed by three-and-a-half hours of arts, culture and sports.
The transmissions will be available in Iran via satellite and by Giant Savings” href=”#”>online. Programs will be broadcast several times each day to make it more difficult for the regime to jam the signal.
At a press conference in the British capital, the channel’s director and editor-in-chief Ali Asghar Ramezanpoor said “Raha” would be the “first independent channel that belongs to Iranian people.”
“There are channels in by Giant Savings” href=”#”>Persian — like BBC or Voice of America — but they are from others countries, not Iranian people,” added Ramezanpoor, a former deputy minister in the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. The channel is funded by Amir Hossein Jahanchahi, founder of opposition movement Green Wave. He claimed the channel would challenge the regime of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
“Raha TV is the TV for change because this regime is immoral, inhuman and unreasonable,” he said, adding that transition had to come “from inside, by Iranian people.”
Raha will employ 40 people in London and will also rely on a network of around 20 freelancers in Iran. Jahanchahi said Raha “would be open to all opposition, reformist and non-reformist, to all people who want a different future” for Iran

JOURNALIST NAYAB CHOHAN INTERVIEWS STEWART PURVIS in TEMPLATE EXCLUSIVE – Why OFCOM took Press TV off the Airwaves

LONDON – Press TV could be back on the UK airwaves, Professor Stewart Purvis who was on the OFCOM board that made the decision to take the Iranian-owned broadcaster off air said today in an exclusive Template interview.

Prof Purvis said Press TV had not been able to meet European standards and regulations, highlighting the interview broadcast with a man who later said he had been under duress from the Iranian authorities as an example of this.

He did not however rule out a time when OFCOM and Press TV could meet and iron out the problems, that mean that viewers can only see the channel on the deregulated web.

Press TV is taken off the Airwaves

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Everytime I flick on to the PressTV channel of my freeview box, I get a blank screen.

That’s because Of com has taken the Iranian-owned station off air, citing the failure to pay a six-figure sum for broadcasting an interview with someone who later said what he had said had come about under duress, and a number of breaches of editorial standards.

PressTV for its part says this is censorship, and that it has been penalised for the line it has taken on last year’s Royal wedding – remember this is a revolution that overthrew a monarch – and for its coverage of the riots that hit Britain.

Phil Rees, who has appeared on the station as a journalist and media analyst told RussiaToday that at the “end of the day” this decision had more to do with Iran’s relationship with the West, and with Britain – whose embassy in Tehran was recently stormed – in particular.

PressTV  suffered from weak journalism, and was seen by many within the industry as a propaganda channel, the ideas of fairness, balance and impartiality in its newscoverage were often not present, something that will no doubt be levelled at RussiaToday and the Chinese-owned CCTV.

That said PressTV did bother to cover the civilian toll of the Afghan and Iraq wars, and a viewer was given a fresh point of view, one seen through the eyes of someone regarded in this country as ‘other’.

George Galloway’s slot gave people who would not get the chance to be heard on television the opportunity to get their point across.

And occasionally their documentaries brought something new, like the truck drivers journey through Siberia.

And unlike many newsrooms, it was also a very woman friendly environment – you only have to look at the number of women presenters to appreciate that.

With tension mounting in the Strait of Hormuz, it would have been better to have allowed this channel to continue its broadcasts from its Hanger Lane office.

Instead, by closing it down it looks like someone has decided to silence a flawed, but still alternative voice.

How many are really dying in the Afghan War?

31 Thursday Mar 2011

Afghanistan, Afghanistan War, PressTV, UK

Apparently, the British government is attempting to shut down Iranian-owned Press Tv. It continues however, to broadcast on television and on its website, where I first stumbled on its videos because PressTv is actually covering the civilian death toll of the Afghan conflict. Video postings include the slaughter of a family at marriage ceremony in Farah province by a multi-ton bomb dropped by Nato by mistake and the attempt by the Taliban to storm Kabul last summer, which is particularly memorable because the reporter on the scene was virtually thrown off his feet by the impact of the gunfire. The reporter was fine and still continues to  file reports within minutes of an incident in this war torn country to PressToday which still broadcasts on television and the internet. www.presstv.ir
