ANALYSIS – RT which was formerly known as RussiaToday has become the focus of considerable attention here in Britain and across the Atlantic because it’s critics say the channel is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Vladimir Putin. Those critics include The Guardian newspaper which claims to champion free speech, as well as the usual suspects at Fox News. OFCOM which took Iranian owned PressTV off the air here has criticised RT for its lack of balance particularly over its coverage of Ukraine which the channel has unsuccessfully attempted to portray as a battle against the facists and Nazis of Kiev, in much as same way as it attempted to show the former president of Georgia to be a genocidal maniac. RT offers a different point of view – it has at least two clear stars in its schedule, namely Max Keiser and Peter Lavelle’s Cross Talk programme – and sometimes scores hits for instance it recently showed the civilian toll of Saudi Arabia’s air strikes in Yemen, which al Jazeera has been claiming to be a largely ‘clean’ war. Of course RT is a propaganda channel it may deny this but it comes across as such on air and in its content, and you also get the impression that it is impossible to criticise the President of Russia or Russia generally – but that shouldn’t mean it being removed off air. The viewer gets another take on the world and should be allowed to make their own judgment as to whether what they are seeing and hearing has some merit or is just a state’s propaganda. Any judgements like those that resulted in the removal of PressTV must take into account this broader picture, that RT offers a point of view from a part of the world that is still misunderstood and because of various reasons will continue to play a major part in future world affairs.

EAST London – Eight-year-old Ayesha’s killers – her mother and the woman who was her mother’s lover – were jailed for thirteen and eighteen years. Both were convicted of manslaughter. Little Ayesha was found in her bedroom with more than 50 injuries including bite marks in August 2013. Her mother Polly Chowdury had according to the judge ‘disgracefully failed’ her child. Whilst Kiki Muddar was described as a ‘manipulative, wicked woman’. Muddar had rang the police on August 29 to tell them that Chowdury had tried to commit suicide and that Ayesha was dead. Chowdury told the court Ayesha had been hurt after Muddar had given her a cold bath for wetting herself. Both women were cleared of murder.
ANALYSIS – One outcome is certain if the current state of affairs is allowed to continue – the creation of a NEW Russia in the east of Ukraine. The rebels are fighting despite a ceasefire which was also broken by the Russian backed fighters on the first time – this can only mean they are intent on securing a railway link from Donetsk to Luhansk. Already, the newly emerging state has secured the airport – all it needs is the port of Mariupol for a link to Russia proper. The longer this conflict is allowed to drag on, the less favourably Vladimir Putin is emerging – clearly he doesn’t care, Russia’s sovereign wealth funds are large enough to sustain it through any Western sanctions and he clearly doesn’t fear Europe’s military prowess, which has fought poorly in other theatres. Ukraine says it needs modern weapons to defend itself – unfortunately it is right.

Caucasus, Chechen Boy is dragged from his home by Russian soldiers, Chechnya, Distant Echoes, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Ottoman Empire, Putin, Putin and Russia, Russia and Putin, Russia and the Caucasus, Russia and the West, Template News, Vladimir Putin
Last night’s BBC documentary Putin, Russia and The West contained perhaps the most powerful and disturbing footage broadcast on terrestrial television yet.
A boy from a village in Chechnya is dragged out of his home by Russian soldiers, he is heard screaming for his life – ‘hy-aa Allah’ – and the narrator tells us that his body was found much later buried in a Russian base.
The pictures which were shot before the Moscow Theatre siege, and of course much earlier than Beslan, are perhaps also the first hard proof of what Russia’s soldiers were doing as they attempted to reconquer Chechnya for their president, Vladimir Putin.
Russia’s military doctrine when it comes to conquering and reconquering its restive Muslim provinces has been simple – the harder you hit them, the less likely they are to come back again.
Russia’s soldiers were of course the original ethnic cleansers, a process that began under Ivan the Terrible is still ongoing to this day in the Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingush Settia.
Little wonder then that the West has found it hard to accommodate Russia as a part of Europe or Nato.
