ANALYSIS – Listening to Iraq’s PM Al Abadi congratulate his forces on a hard fought ‘victory’ over Daesh in Mosul, took me back me to the time when Nouri al Maliki announced to the world that that other Satan of Iraq, one Zarqawi had been killed. Like the leader of Daesh, Abu Musab al Zarqawi was a terrorist who deserved his fate and that went for his ‘band of brothers’ who in this case were al Qaeda. Of course, then as now, there seem to be no understanding of the human cost as well as the legality of taking out someone the West doesn’t like.
Mosul has been ruined – the UN estimates the damage to be $1bn and we have no idea how many people have perished under the rubble. Iraq’s forces alone may have suffered close to a thousand losses. Until now, Iraq had come to an understanding with the forces of ISIS who were tolerated for the sake of the local population and peace. That of course changed with attacks in Europe and elsewhere that were blamed on Daesh. Iraq under pressure from the country that had invaded it to get rid of the ‘Butcher of Baghdad’ and put in place a pliant leader was forced to act. And every inch of soil ‘recovered’ has come at an appalling cost – Tikrit, Ramadi all were virtually flattened which brings us to the remaining ‘swath’ of Daesh land, Raqqa where US forces have been using white phosphorus.

Palestine joined the ICC in 2015 – a move opposed by Israel, US and most of the ICC’s European backers.

ANALYSIS – Bernie Sanders is a once in a lifetime candidate – he shouldn’t be, trouble is he is. And that is why the President of America who came eight years ago promising change may want to pause and think before reading Senator Bernie Sanders the riot act. Bernie has managed to make millions believe that America is their country, that they count. He has done this through standing on principle, year after year, decade after decade. When he makes a promise you know he’s going to do his best to deliver. If America is ever going to change, if it’s ever going to take a long and critical look at it’s past and become a force for good in the world, it’s going to have look after it’s own citizens – 70% of whom have had no college education, millions of whom sleep on the streets in what is still the wealthiest country in the history of man.
Hillary Clinton won’t do this – she hasn’t the will or frankly the self awareness. Hillary Clinton is simply too selfish. She is a woman with blood on her hands, who backed the Iraq War, and pushed for conflicts in Libya, Honduras and Syria. She is a woman who was pictured jumping for joy at the news of Colonel Gaddafi’s death and was clearly relishing the ‘take down’ of Osama bin Laden. Hillary Clinton has done all this because she has actively sought the office of President through out her long and financially rewarding political career. In every way, she is a creation of the corrupt political system that Bernie’s supporters so despise.
If Hillary Clinton and her powerful friends get their way, they will simply promise more of the same – four more years of ensuring the American dream is experienced by the few and not the many. And that can only lead to one outcome – victory for Donald Trump, the candidate who like Bernie has managed to tap into this nation’s widespread disillusionment with what America has become.
LONDON – THE FORMER Deputy PM urged Blair to ‘calm down’ after he had criticised the left and advised those whose heart was with Jeremy Corbin to have a ‘heart transplant.’ Prescott said Blair’s comments were ‘unacceptable’ in an interview with the BBC’S TODAY PROGRAMME.

NEW YORK – UN investigators claimed both sides had committed war crimes during last year’s 50 day war. They said the Israelis should have renewed the policy of air strikes as casualties mounted, change the weapons and the quality of warnings before launching attacks in civilian areas. Hamas, the UN said, had fired indiscriminately with the intention of spreading terror. Israel’s actions were disproportionate and could be war crimes.
2, 251 PALESTINIANS WERE KILLED, OF WHICH 1,462 were civilians ..
67 Israeli soldiers were killed – 6 civilians
11, 231 Palestinian civilians were injured, 1, 466 Israelis..
ANALYSIS – RT which was formerly known as RussiaToday has become the focus of considerable attention here in Britain and across the Atlantic because it’s critics say the channel is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Vladimir Putin. Those critics include The Guardian newspaper which claims to champion free speech, as well as the usual suspects at Fox News. OFCOM which took Iranian owned PressTV off the air here has criticised RT for its lack of balance particularly over its coverage of Ukraine which the channel has unsuccessfully attempted to portray as a battle against the facists and Nazis of Kiev, in much as same way as it attempted to show the former president of Georgia to be a genocidal maniac. RT offers a different point of view – it has at least two clear stars in its schedule, namely Max Keiser and Peter Lavelle’s Cross Talk programme – and sometimes scores hits for instance it recently showed the civilian toll of Saudi Arabia’s air strikes in Yemen, which al Jazeera has been claiming to be a largely ‘clean’ war. Of course RT is a propaganda channel it may deny this but it comes across as such on air and in its content, and you also get the impression that it is impossible to criticise the President of Russia or Russia generally – but that shouldn’t mean it being removed off air. The viewer gets another take on the world and should be allowed to make their own judgment as to whether what they are seeing and hearing has some merit or is just a state’s propaganda. Any judgements like those that resulted in the removal of PressTV must take into account this broader picture, that RT offers a point of view from a part of the world that is still misunderstood and because of various reasons will continue to play a major part in future world affairs.

EAST London – Eight-year-old Ayesha’s killers – her mother and the woman who was her mother’s lover – were jailed for thirteen and eighteen years. Both were convicted of manslaughter. Little Ayesha was found in her bedroom with more than 50 injuries including bite marks in August 2013. Her mother Polly Chowdury had according to the judge ‘disgracefully failed’ her child. Whilst Kiki Muddar was described as a ‘manipulative, wicked woman’. Muddar had rang the police on August 29 to tell them that Chowdury had tried to commit suicide and that Ayesha was dead. Chowdury told the court Ayesha had been hurt after Muddar had given her a cold bath for wetting herself. Both women were cleared of murder.

ANALYSIS – Some Americans have long complained that criticism of their country is motivated by pure envy. It is anti-American to utter any voice opposing a foreign policy that has interests in every corner of the globe. And those Americans that do – like the ones who appear on state-run RussiaToday – are portrayed with some justification as self hating do-gooders. The current assault on Gaza and America’s central role in it may change some of that. Washington’s position on Tel Aviv has been to use its veto as a permanent member of the UN security council to block any binding resolution on the security council against a nation that regards itself as special. That has been the case since the six day war of 1967 when the speed of Israel’s victory convinced Washington that it was able to beat the Arab world singlehandedly and would thus be a reliable partner. That view was reinforced by Henry Kissinger during the Yom Kippur War of 1973 and has continued to this day. There have been low points, like after Sabra and Shatila, but this like any spats such as the one John Kerry is said to have had with Netanyahu’s cabinet during the last ‘peace’ initiatives achieve nothing unless America decides to rein in this rogue state which since 1967 has subjected the Palestinians to numerous massacres regardless of whether the Israeli governments are ‘dovish’ or ‘hawkish’. Palestinians have rights too, they exist and have a right to exist free of assault, blockade and humiliation. But Israel doesn’t want to hear it and as long as Washington gives her carte blanche this is a state of affairs that is going to continue for many more years to come – unless the world finds a way to circumvent the veto that the world’s most powerful nation exercises in support of Israel.
