TEMPLATE REPORT

Exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky has been found dead at his home in Surrey.

The circumstances of the death of Mr Berezovsky – a wanted man in Russia, and an opponent of President Vladimir Putin – are not yet known.

He was a former Kremlin power-broker whose fortunes had declined under Mr Putin. Berezovsky emigrated to the UK in 2000.

Last year, he lost a £3bn ($4.7bn) damages claim against Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

Mr Berezovsky claimed he had been intimidated by Mr Abramovich into selling shares in Russian oil giant Sibneft for a “fraction of their true worth”.

The allegations were completely rejected by the London Commercial Court judge, who called Mr Berozovsky an “inherently unreliable” witness.

david-cameronTEMPLATE ANALYSIS

When David Cameron appeared before the party faithful many moons ago, he promised to deliver them to government – all they had to do was trust him and make him leader of the party.

Today, with talk of a plot being hatched by Theresa May and Phillip Hammond, after a poor by-election showing at Eastleigh, all of which coming on top of the devastating indictment of how his chancellor has handled the economy, Cameron’s position as leader of his party is looking increasingly untenable.

Indeed, today’s appearance before the ballot box at Prime Minister’s Question Time reminded one observer of the dying days of the Gordon Brown government.

The opposition fired salvos to the increasing frustration and annoyance of the  once so self-assured and even cocky Prime Minister.

Truth is Cameron was on shaky ground from the moment the results of the 2010 election announced and he had not delivered the resounding victory that he and his media friends has promised and expected to the very faithful he had so memorably spoken to on the day of the contest for the leader of the opposition.

Trouble is he may have also have done the Conservative Party long-term damage – for they were not popular before they got into Downing Street and certainly are not now, given the speed at which they set about putting this country through the toughest cuts since age of Thatcher.

Barcelona 4 AC Milan 0 – Champions of the Champion’s League

TEMPLATE REPORT

Before this game, Barcelona asked their home fans to believe in them.

The faithful who filled the Nou Camp last night were not disappointed, as the world’s greatest team overcame a 2-0 deficit to make Champions League history and remind us all that there such a thing as magic.

From the fifth minute, when Lionel Messi struck a stunning volley the pressure on their Italian giants was unrelenting.

Imagine Spanish national team with Messi as their NO 10 and you have got an idea of how great this Barcelona side were last night.

Messi’s second goal came within a minute of the young Milan striker M’Baye Niang hitting the post.

Had that gone in, then perhaps it would have taken the sting out of the Barca tail. but AC Milan were still in it even in the second half when David Villa put the Spanish giants against three ahead.

It would have only taken a single away goal to rob Barca, and the world, of surely yet another Champion’s League triumph at Wembley.

Fortunately for everyone concerned Milan’s Brazilian striker – what ever happened to Brazilian football then – Robinho was simply overwhelmed by the sheer class of the opposition.

Barcelona answered all the questions asked of them in this game, they became the first team to overcome a deficit to progress into the next round, and in the process they reminded us all that there is such a thing as the beautiful game.

Hugo Chavez – hated by the rich, loved by the poor. #HugoChavez

Hugo Chavez, Venezuela

imagesTEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Hugo Chavez, whose death at 58 was announced on Wednesday, survived a coup and several assassination attempts.

However, he could not survive his greatest battle – the one with cancer.

Chavez polarised opinions inside his nation, and outside.

To the well-heeled elite of Venezuela he was Hitler, Stalin, Mao and then worse – a man whose incompetence took this oil-rich Latin American country to financial crisis, who also turned a blind eye to the escalating violence that plagues the barrios.

Take a look outside, any rich Venezuelan would tell anyone that would listen from their stunning palaces, and all you see is chaos.

And to the Americans, who Chavez called the ‘Empire’, he was a headache.

Here was a man who sat on a strategically important part of the US economy and it was a no secret how they plotted to have him overthrown or assassinated.

But Chavez just wouldn’t go – he survived a coup because the people of the barrios refused to accept the newly installed President.

And it is the people of the barrios who are in mourning today.

What the rich will never understood is how the poor feel as they live in a land of plenty.

Chavez never took any of their wealth, the elite continued to live in fabulous wealth, however he made the poor –  including those he supplied free gas to in America – feel like they counted, that their voice was not being ignored.

And that is why there are many mourners and many who will file past his embalmed body when it is laid in state.

And not because as his cheering detractors believe, he was a power-mad, fascist dictator who died like Stalin.

Champions League, Manchester United v Real Madrid

TEMPLATE REPORT

Manchester United must not live in fear of former star Cristiano Ronaldo when he returns to Old Trafford for the deciding Champions League clash with Real Madrid, Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed.

“If we worry about the danger Cristiano can give us we will forget some of the things we can do ourselves.”

“What do you expect when you play against a team with Cristiano in it?” said Ferguson. “You expect problems during the match. We have to try to curtail that as much as we can and as best we can.

“The experience young Rafael had in the first half in Madrid hopefully helps him because he will be given the same task again.”

Ronaldo scored Real’s goal in the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu – leaving the last 16 tie delicately balanced ahead of Tuesday’s second leg.

’46 dead’ as protests over Bangladesh war crimes verdict reach a third day

TEMPLATE REPORT

Three people have been killed in Bangladesh after demonstrators protesting against the death sentence on an Islamist party leader clashed with police for a third day running.

Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was sentenced on Thursday on charges including murder, rape and torture during the war of independence in 1971.

Since then, at least 46 people have died in riots across the country.

Mr Sayeedi’s Jamaat-e-Islami party says the tribunal is politically motivated.

Mr Sayeedi is the third defendant to be convicted by the tribunal, which was set up in 2010 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government to deal with those accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces who attempted to stop East Pakistan (as Bangladesh was then) from becoming an independent country.

Earlier this month, another Jamaat leader, Abdul Kader Mullah, was sentenced to life for crimes against humanity.

In January, former party leader Abul Kalam Azad was found guilty in absentia of eight charges of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death.

The tribunal is trying a total of nine Jamaat leaders and two members of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Human rights groups have said the tribunal falls short of international standards.

Jamaat is an ally of the BNP, which is led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Ms Zia says the war crimes trials are politically motivated to target the opposition. The government has denied the allegation.

Jamaat and Ms Zia’s party have called for a three-day nationwide general strike starting Sunday.

Two Afghan boys ‘killed in Nato airstrike’

TEMPLATE REPORT

Two brothers who were out collecting firewood with their donkeys have been killed during an air strike from a Nato helicopter.

The new American commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Joseph F. Dunford said the killings were an accident. “I offer my personal apology and condolences to the family of the boys who were killed,” General Dunford said. “We take full responsibility for this tragedy.”

The victims – Toor Jan, 11, and Andul Wodood, 12 –  had been walking behind their donkeys in the Shahed-e-Hasas district of Oruzgan Province when the helicopter fired on them, according to Afghan officials in the district. The two donkeys were killed as well.

General Dunford said that coalition forces had opened fire on what they thought were insurgent forces, and killed the boys by accident.

There was some disagreement about the presence of Taliban in the area and about the details of the episode.

Haji Mohammad Esmail, head of the district shura or council, said the area was “fully under government control,” and that “we haven’t seen any engagement in the area and nor is the area threatened by the Taliban.”

This is the second airstrike to kill civilians since General Dunford assumed command in February –  In Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan, up to 11 civilians were killed, including 5 children, when airstrikes were used to destroy two homes.
