A Woman attacked by Egyptian Security Forces

Until yesterday, I would have said that the most horrific and disturbing image of the year would have been the slaughter of Colonel Gaddafi by thugs armed by Nato.

What a difference a day makes…no one even those of us used to the stories of the brutality engaged by Middle Eastern governments on their own people were prepared for the casual, shameless attack on this young woman.

At first, you could have mistaken the body, lying on the floor with her top half there for the world to see, for a manikin as she was set upon by two, three may be more security guards.

Later credible reports say she was veiled before her humiliation.

The Egyptian army are going to find this impossible to explain away.

Muslims never attack women.

The protesters on Tahrir Square say Mubarak has never left – on the evidence of this image perhaps they are right.

Time for an election?

People are being killed in Syria, those people are protesting against the ruling government of President Bashar al-Assad. A Youtube video shown by Al-Jazeera today shows a man behind a camera shot by a sniper. There is also footage of firing into protestors, that number tens rather than hundreds, which appears to result in the death of one man.

The Syrian President can dismiss the demonstrations as small scale and unrepresentative and whilst he can call on the numbers that we saw last week on the streets of Damascus, he may even be right to claim so.

However, you can not use your police to kill your own citizens.

The days of dictators – however, benevolent, and by all accounts Assad has until recent events been seen as a refreshing change to the iron fist wielded by his father – are long gone, even in Syria, where it is often remarked that no one sleeps in the street.

Revolutions start from this?
If like me you are following unfolding events in the Arab world with a mixture of astonishment and some apprehension about the future you may want to look at The Economist’s video graph to see where the next revolution could occur. Dubbed the Shoethrower’s Index, after one Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at an outgoing American President who had ordered an invasion of his country, the index looks at a number of factors, including youth unemployment, poverty and inequalities between rich and poor. The results contain no surprises but watch out for Mauritania, which is country that has not received much attention over here.
