ANALYSIS – There were, of course, victories for the Western powers in Muslim lands long before 1917. Britain and France were colonial empires who had seized control of lands in the name of freedom for centuries. However, 1917 was different and marked the beginning of the modern relationship between the Middle East and the West. For in this year came the fall of Palestine to the British, an event that led to eventual collapse and dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the Muslim World’s last and true Islamic state. So significant was this to the West that the General who led the British through the gates of Jerusalem remarked the ‘Crusades’ were now over, and his French counterpart upon arriving at Damascus remarked at Saladin’s grave that he stood witness to the triumph of the cross over the crescent. After this, both powers set about governing the Middle East according to their ‘zones of influence.’ The Arabs who helped them get into power were treated with classic colonial disdain – promises of freedom were not kept and when a new rival emerged from the Saudi desert funding to the ‘Sheriff of Mecca’ was simply frozen. No ruler would be allowed to be powerful enough to challenge another and, of course, no one would ever challenge the imperial rule of Britain and France. This was a pattern that would continue when those empires collapsed some thirty years later and the USA took their place. The defeat of Nasser’s Egypt in six days by the state of Israel meant Washington now had an ally that it could rely on to keep on eye on a Middle East which was being energized by nationalist movements – the strongest of which was the Baath Party which took control of Iraq and Syria. The Iran-Iraq War of the late nineteen eighties ensured neither country would emerge as a single power to challenge for supremacy of the Middle East. Washington armed both sides to ensure that this didn’t occur. And when the army of Saddam Hussein entered the oil Kingdom of Kuwait and threatened the oil fields of Saudi Arabia, America cobbled together a paper coalition and ensured the removal of the invading army. The terror attacks of 9/11 then offered policy makers in Washington the opportunity to rid the Middle East of Saddam Hussein and Colonel Gaddafi under the guise of freedom. Now it’s the turn of Syria and after that it’ll be Iran.

More than 20 countries – including France and Russia – say the deportations of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in WW1 was ‘genocide’. Turkey denies there was a systematic attempt to wipe out a population.

ANALYSIS – When the Czar of Russia came to England in the 1850s he talked of putting an end to the ‘sick man of Europe.’ He was of course talking about the Muslim Ottoman Empire and assumed that the fellow Christian nations of Great Britain and France would join Russia in this enterprise. They did not. And the resulting Crimean War put into place the pattern of international relations that remains to this day – that Russia will always remain outside Europe. So given this, it is astonishing that the Turkish ‘Republic’ with its vast Muslim population should ever have thought they would be part of Europe. British PM David Cameron’s comments that it would take Ankara to the year 3000 at the current rate of progress to get there should have hammered home the message.

Turkey applied in 1981 and it’s application to realise the dream of their founder Mustafa Kemal ‘Ataturk’ has remained in limbo ever since whilst a host of eastern European countries have been embraced within the union.
Of course France and Germany will talk at length at the cultural differences between the Turks and Europeans – but they fear much more. The migrant/refugee crisis that hit the European mainland has highlighted the ‘danger’ of opening the borders to 64 million Turks. But this is much much more –  and the Turkish elite only need  to look at the 1890s to see how France and England’s bankers and politicians treated the ‘Sick man of Europe’ to understand this.

ANALYSIS – Russia’s long and bloody history with the people of the Caucasus can be traced back to one event and date – the fall of Crimea in 1789 to Catherine the Great. Before that there were numerous attempts to seize this territory including one by Peter ‘the Great’ that resulted in humiliating surrender and imprisonment. And each time the fighting followed a pattern first set by Ivan the Terrible when he conquered the Muslim lands now known as eastern Ukraine. For the Russians who were the original ‘ethnic cleansers’ carried out a military doctrine that exists to this day – the harder you hit them the less likely they are to come back. This was true in Crimea in 1789, and the long and unrelenting wars in the Caucasus that have followed to this day. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise to hear Vladimir PUTIN’s Russia mediated a truce between Azerbaijan and it’s Christian ally Armenia over the latest flare up in the northern Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh. What will surprise the people of the Caucasus – Chechnya, DAGESTAN, Ingush Setia and Georgia –  and Ukraine for that matter is how quickly and responsibly Moscow acted to end the fighting. Perhaps, Russia is seeking a new role in world affairs –  after its welcome actions in Syria – one based and mediation and tolerance built on trust with powerful allies such as China and Iran as well as accommodating Europe. Let’s hope so because the other reading into its actions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is that PUTIN’s Kremlin is simply lining up for an inevitable war with Turkey, the once great Ottoman Empire whose armies Catherine defeated to seize Crimea.
