Taliban attack on Camp Bastion

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

The full extent of the Taliban’s audacious raid on Camp Bastion/Camp Leatherneck, a massive complex in southern Helmand province that serves as the main base for U.S. Marines and British forcesΒ only became clear on Sunday.Β It was a coordinated assault thatΒ destroyed six Marine CorpsΒ AV-8B Harrier jump-jets and “significantly” damaged two others, as well as some hangars.

The Taliban also destroyed three refueling stations.

Harrier jets cost an inflation-adjusted $30 million to $40 million apiece when they were acquired in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Armed with automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and suicide vests, they Β organized into three teams and appeared “well-equipped, trained and rehearsed.”

AccordingΒ to the Coalition, the militants hadΒ penetrated one point of the perimeter fence.Β andΒ the damage caused represents a major loss of combat
power – Β around half a Harrier squadron

To have pulled this off, reports suggest thatΒ the attack would have required advance scouting and perhaps inside assistance.

When the Taliban attempted a similar assault on Kandahar Air Field in 2010, they failed.

This attack is a powerful demonstration that they have learned from previous mistakes and are now able to penetrateΒ a base’s defences.

πŸͺ– Taliban Assault on British Base was ‘aimed at Prince Harry’ πŸ‡¦πŸ‡«

HELMAND – Two American soldiers were killed during a Taliban attack on the British base of Camp Bastion in Southern Afghanistan  last night.

The assault involved between 18 and 20 fighters who used small arms, rockets and mortars to attack the perimeter of the British base.

Prince Harry was at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan during the attack and a Taliban spokesman said he was the target.

The Taliban spokesman had at first said that the attack was a response to a US-made film mocking Islam.

They released a video of the attack, a snatch of which is pictured above.

The Prince, who is third in line to the BritishΒ throne,Β is celebrating his 28th birthday andΒ is in Afghanistan for four months on his second tour of duty.

He was not in any danger during this unprecedented assault on one of the world’s busiest airports.

Several other Nato troops were wounded, whilst one Taliban fighter was caught alive and the rest killed.

Camp Bastion which is situated in the middle of the desert is extremely heavily fortified.

An MoD spokesman said this was a significant attack adding: “there has been some damage to equipment which is still being assessed.”

“After swift action by ISAF forces, including UK personnel, the incident was contained.”

Three hundred and thirty coalition soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, of which 252 are from the US.

πŸͺ– US Ambassador to Libya killed in Benghazi embassy Attack πŸ‡±πŸ‡Ύ

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Anyone who met Christopher Stevens said he was a very nice man who had a lot ofΒ time for you. He was also proud of the role he had taken in ousting Colonel Gaddafi and in helping the Transitional National Council into Tripoli.

So, it is a cruel irony that heΒ has beenΒ killed in a country he helped to free, in the place where the rebellion began andΒ of courseΒ on the eleventh anniversary of those infamous attacks on America.

The cause for the rocket attacks on the US consulate in Benghazi is a film that clearly insults the Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim Brotherhood of EgyptΒ have today called forΒ worldwideΒ condemnation ofΒ the movie made by Israeli film maker Sam Bacile.

Post-Gaddafi Libya has of course been a disaster with the ruling government in Tripoli largely ignored asΒ armed gangs control large parts of the capital, and outside.

Libya is in danger of breaking into three – all of which calls into question Nato’s decision to intervene as Gaddafi’s Libyan forces were amassed outside Benghazi.

Yesterday’sΒ brutal actionsΒ that resulted in the deaths ofΒ Stevens and three other consular members have been condemned by Hilary Clinton. This was, of course,Β the same Hilary Clinton who jumped for joy on hearing of Colonel Gaddafi’s death.

An insurgent rocket attack on a US air base in Afghanistan has damaged the plane of America’s top military officer.

Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff had arrved in the country following a spate of ‘green on blue’ kiilings.

He was not near the plane at the time.

However, two US maintenance crew were slightly injured.

The attack happened late on Monday night at the US air base in Bagram.

Gen Dempsey had arrived on Monday in a C-17 transport aircraft which was parked at Bagram.

Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, had met Nato commanders and officials for talks after the death of a Nato soldier on Sunday who was shot dead by an Afghan in a police uniform.

The soldier was the 10th US soldier to die in this way in two weeks.

Two American soldiers were killed in another incident on Friday.

And six were killed in a single day on 10 August.

Some 130,000 (“blue”) Nato troops are fighting insurgents in Afghanistan, alongside 350,000 (“green”) Afghans.

So far, 40 members of the  International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) personnel – most of the victims Americans – have been killed by members of the Afghan security forces this year.

There were 35 such deaths in all of 2011

A statement from Nato’s Isaf force said shrapnel from “an indirect fire round” had damaged the plane as well as a Nato helicopter.

The general was in his room at the time of the attack, according to officials.

Three men on terror charges ‘plotted attack on English Defence League’

10 Tuesday Jul 2012

Birmingham, English Defence League, Terrorism

Jewel Uddin, 26, Omar Mohammed Khan, 27, and Mohammed Hasseen, 23, all from Sparkhill, were arrested during raids last week after police stopped a car on the M1 and found guns, knives, machetes and a home-made explosive device.

They appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on terror charges, where they were accused of targeting the English Defence League, who had held a rally in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, earlier that day.

The case has been sent to the Old Bailey for a hearing on 31 July.

Mr Uddin, Mr Khan and Mr Hasseen are charged under the Terrorism Act 2006, accused of preparing for an act or acts of terrorism with the intention of committing such acts. They are accused of manufacturing an improvised explosive device, as well as acquiring firearms and other weapons, and vehicles connected with their alleged plans.

The men were arrested by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, following a routine police stop of a vehicle on the M1 near Sheffield, South Yorkshire, on 30 June.

Four other men detained in connection with the investigation remain in custody.

They are a 22-year-old man from Smethwick, West Midlands; a 22-year-old man from Alum Rock, Birmingham; a 24-year-old man from Moseley, Birmingham; and a man aged 43 from Kirklees, West Yorkshire.

Police have been given until Wednesday to charge, release or apply for a warrant of further detention for three of them. The fourth man can be held until Thursday.

A Woman is executed outside Kabul

09 Monday Jul 2012

ANALYSIS

Adam was the first Prophet of God, and Muslims believe that Muhammed was the last.  What the last Prophet of God would have made of the images that emerged from outside Kabul yesterday, one can never really know.

My guess is that a man who was comfortable in the company of women, who actively encouraged women to be firm in their opinions, and who fell in love with a strong woman fifteen years his senior, would have been as horrified as everyone else with the video that was posted online.

The 22-year-old woman was crouched with her back to her executioners, before being shot. That action was also accompanied with the words ‘Allah -o-Akbar’.

The video with its chilling echo of that execution in a stadium of a woman in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan more than a decade ago is of course a reminder of many things – the brutality of a culture marked by decades of senseless war, the fact that men from certain cultures still have not learned to behave in a civilised, (with akale) manner, etc, etc.

Perhaps, the most depressing thing though is that the Taliban don’t seemed to have learned from being in the wilderness for more than a decade.

The best thing they could do is to look at the Hadith of the Prophet, which clearly documents HOW a Muslim should treat a woman.

Leon Panetta ends Asia Trip with Unscheduled Visit to Afghanistan

America had “run out of patience” with Pakistan, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said during an unscheduled visit to Afghanistan.

The Pentagon Chief was speaking to troops gathered at the airport in Kabul. The comments brought to an end Panetta’s week-long trip to Asia  during which he explained the new US military strategy, which calls for a shift in strategic focus to the Asia-Pacific region.

“We are reaching the limits of our patience here, ” Panetta said.

“It is difficult to achieve peace in Afghanistan as long as there is safe haven for terrorists in Pakistan.

“It is very important for Pakistan to take steps. It is an increasing concern, the issue of safe haven.”

“..we have every responsibility to defend ourselves and… we’ve got to put pressure on Pakistan to take them on as well”.

The Slow Massacre of British Troops

26 Monday Mar 2012

Afghanistan, Afghanistan and Britain, Distant Echoes, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Philip Hammond, Politics πŸ’Ό πŸ—³ πŸͺ–, Slow massacre of British troops in Afghanistan, Template News, Terrorism, UK, US and Afghanistan

The word ‘massacre’ is so often used in today’s world of never-ceasing war, that you can forget what it means. That what that American soldier committed in Kandahar was a massacre is without a shadow of doubt – the figure is now 17 civilians, mostly children and women.

Even the American PR spin about him being mentally ill could not hide that reality. However, what isn’t mentioned perhaps because those deaths have come at a slower – drip –  speed, is the massacre of British troops in Afghanistan.

The latest incident which was confirmed by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has taken the number to 407.

When British troops were first moved into Helmand Province, it was then claimed that there would be no need to fire any guns in anger.

What a difference a few years a make.

This campaign which is still not understood over here, is regarded by the enemy which many over here call the Taliban, as America’s war.

Everyone else is just there to make up the numbers – nothing more.
