The Autumn Audit, 2011

Staring into the abyss..

This country will face five more years of cut backs – otherwise known as austerity. It will mean that when the coalition government runs for re-election in 2015, they will do so with the promise that there will two more years of “tough choices” before the deficit will be eliminated.

During this time, the axe will fall on 700, 000 public sector jobs, so taking the number of jobless past the three million mark – already over one million of our young people have little prospect of finding a job in the current challenging climate.

Last night, Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the Treasury, informed Newsnight that the Lib Dems were right behind the plan for more cuts.

The opposition says the cuts are too fast.

They are right – the social consequences of the planned austerity measures are horrendous, which is something that the young, well heeled George Osbourne does not seemed to factored into his equations.

However, the two Eds need to come up with ideas as to how propel the economy foward – now is not the time for political point scoring or in fighting, hopefully Labour has learned its lesson from the last time there was a prolonged period of Conservative government, then first Tony Benn and then an overconfident Neil Kinnock ensured three terms of Thatcher, which was followed by John Major.

Arguably the cost to our children will be much worse if David Cameron and George Osbourne are allowed to continue.

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, opportunities for those born into modest incomes have been on the slide since 1970.

One can imagine what they will like on May 7, 2015.

Nato Airstrike kills 24 Pakistani Soldiers

Was the latest incident involving Pakistan and her troubled alliance with the United States of America the result of a Nato emboldened by her success in Libya?

There are many – not just Pakistan’s public – who believe so.

The attack on a border post was, according to Pakistan, unprovoked and she reserves the right to hit back at a time of her choosing.

Nato’s response has not been very convincing for someone who has effectively declared warΒ on her hitherto ally.

She, like America believes the root of her troublesΒ in Afghanistan lie in Islamabad and more precisely with the Pakistan secret service, the ISI.

The Western allies are wrong –Β the Taliban are fueled by resentment at foreign occupation of theirΒ country, how else can they call on people to fight and die for them?

So far,Β Pakistan’s weak civilian government has cut supply lines to nato – hardly a problem now since most of what they need comes through Uzbekistan -andΒ given the US fifteen days to leave a base used to launch drone strikes.

Unfortunately, this will not be enough –Β Pakistan’s military know that there is a perception that they have been seen to beΒ weak, and that a clear demonstration may be neededΒ to warn off Nato, and to more importantly appease herΒ very angry public.

The Euro

Elder statesmen in a barren landscape..

With Italy the latest nation to suffer under the burden of being linked to a single currency, very real questions are being asked about the future of the Euro.

TheEconomistΒ says that Europe has not addressed the fundamentalΒ changes around her – namely the rise of a younger slimmerΒ Β Asia at the cost of this grand once great old man.

Today’s Financial Times outlines a three-trierEurope with France-Germany as the engine, the driver of a system thatΒ relegates eastern Europe to the periphery.

Of course,Β Gordon Brown did warn everyone that France – like Germany – was exposed because of her banks.

So what will become a unit that once touted as a serious economic challenger to the UnitedΒ States of America?

And will things ever be the same again?

The international system created by Europe was never perfect, and frankly the world outside this club of nations was roped into joining it.

Some powers suffered like China, some simply vanished – like the Ottoman Empire, whose lossΒ the Islamic World has been suffering the consequences of to this day, especially in a world order based on power.

The history of the end of the ‘Sick Man of Europe’ can be traced back to the creation of the tiny kingdom of Greece, a cause championed byΒ Shelley and Byron.

The behaviour of the main players at that time towards this once great and nowΒ grand old man was racist.

(Ever wonder where Adolf Hitler some of his ideas from?)

Now a century or so on, with the Eurozone crisis sparked by a bankrupt Greece, how will the main players on the international scene deal with their once great andΒ now grand friend.

With America already signalling thatΒ she will be looking East,Β how will China viewΒ this potentiallyΒ barren economic wasteland, which still fights wars against weaker nations, whilst lecturing others about human rights?

Oligarch’s Playground

You watch my back..

Those who are wondering how our countryΒ could one day pan out, may want to take a look at aΒ Β£6.5 billion court case currently being played out in a London court between two extremely wealthy Russian businessmen, both ofΒ whom profitted from the collapse of the Soviet Union. TheΒ men at theΒ centre of this saga are living comfortablyΒ here in London, though one has his clean-cut football owner image tarnised somewhat by revelations in court that heΒ paid protection moneyΒ during the aluminium wars, when it is reportedΒ someone was killed every three days. The other is wanted by questioning by Russia – in particular by oneΒ Vladimir Putin – for being one of a number of businessmen responsible for walking out of Moscow with a hugeΒ portionΒ ofΒ the nation’s wealth.

Things may not have been that grandΒ under Communism, but after the fall of the evil empire,Β  it was literally each man for himselfΒ inΒ the ‘Wild West’ – those were the words used in court – thatΒ followed.

The ‘new’ money that men such as Roman Abramovich and Boris BerezovskyΒ have brought with them may yet come at a price.

So finally the Chancellor of the Excequer is going to admit what we all haveΒ known from the moment he announced his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this parliament, namelyΒ that his ill thought outΒ schemeΒ is unrealistic and could yet cause long term damage to the economic health of this country.

If as the Business Secretary claims we are in the midst of an economic equivalent of a war, then perhaps David Cameron and the rest of his well -heeled Notting Hill Set should take a close look at the health of the troops that are the citizens of the country.

Throwing large numbers of people onthe scrapheep will not achieve a recovery – I know economists will not tell you that, they are too busy with the figures to look at the social cost of their theories, however any recovery must be based on a workforce being given a chance to be productive.

There’s no other way – money printing is a short term solution,Β which only result inΒ a rise in the price of Gold, asΒ savers scramble to protectΒ themselves.

Infrastructure projects will create work, there are again so did public sector jobs in the north of England.

Hilary Clinton jumps for joy (after hearing Colonel Gaddafi has been killed)

ANALYSIS – It is said that the Secretary of State was delighted at the news of Colonel Gaddafi’s death, indeed a tape of her chanting in joy was put out.

For some reason, it always comes as a surprise when a woman reacts to death in this way. It shouldn’t – one only has to think of ‘Condy’ Rice, Tipvi Livni and our own Margaret Thatcher to know that the gentler sex can be as blood thirsty as their male counterparts.

I wonder if she would have chewed his liver, like Hind did after theΒ defeat of the Prophet’s army at the Battle of Uhud. Then, the vengeful lady, ordered her slave to cut out her enemy’s chest and chewed the liver of the man famed for being the Prophet’s protector, Hamza.

I wonder also if Shakespeare was aware ofΒ Hind when he created Lady Macbeth.

Β

Β

In the wreckage of the country that he had built from nothing, he pleaded for mercy, but brutes don’t understand what that means.

The men who had cornered the fallen dictator of Libya now set about humiliating him.

Never mind that he was a 69 year old man who barely possessed his full faculties.

Never mind also that everything he loved had been taken away from him at the last count he has lost three of sons and of course his adopted daughter in a previous bombing raid.

The men who cornered him and those who support them claim to be Muslims, they say that they understand what God’s last Prophet taught a community that now embraces perhaps a quarter of the earth’s population.

Islam does not permit cold blooded executions, or the celebration of some one’s death.

NATO says this has nothing to do with them, in the same way that British and American secret service claimed the downfall of Mossediq and his consequent humilation had nothing to do with them.

That was a lie, as is the lie that is currently being perpetrated by Cameron and Sarkozy.

They have blood on their hands, perhaps the blood of many who have perished in this pointless enterprise.

One day the world may live to regret the actions of these foolish and reckless men who in their vanity believe that they have a divine mission to bringΒ democracy to those who have never tasted it.

The people of Iran never forgot how their leader was humiliated all those years ago and the reaction came in 1979 with the establishment of a Islamic state.

That may yet happen in the chaos that is now Libya.
