Staring into the abyss..

This country will face five more years of cut backs – otherwise known as austerity. It will mean that when the coalition government runs for re-election in 2015, they will do so with the promise that there will two more years of “tough choices” before the deficit will be eliminated.

During this time, the axe will fall on 700, 000 public sector jobs, so taking the number of jobless past the three million mark – already over one million of our young people have little prospect of finding a job in the current challenging climate.

Last night, Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the Treasury, informed Newsnight that the Lib Dems were right behind the plan for more cuts.

The opposition says the cuts are too fast.

They are right – the social consequences of the planned austerity measures are horrendous, which is something that the young, well heeled George Osbourne does not seemed to factored into his equations.

However, the two Eds need to come up with ideas as to how propel the economy foward – now is not the time for political point scoring or in fighting, hopefully Labour has learned its lesson from the last time there was a prolonged period of Conservative government, then first Tony Benn and then an overconfident Neil Kinnock ensured three terms of Thatcher, which was followed by John Major.

Arguably the cost to our children will be much worse if David Cameron and George Osbourne are allowed to continue.

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, opportunities for those born into modest incomes have been on the slide since 1970.

One can imagine what they will like on May 7, 2015.

Nato Airstrike kills 24 Pakistani Soldiers

Was the latest incident involving Pakistan and her troubled alliance with the United States of America the result of a Nato emboldened by her success in Libya?

There are many – not just Pakistan’s public – who believe so.

The attack on a border post was, according to Pakistan, unprovoked and she reserves the right to hit back at a time of her choosing.

Nato’s response has not been very convincing for someone who has effectively declared war on her hitherto ally.

She, like America believes the root of her troubles in Afghanistan lie in Islamabad and more precisely with the Pakistan secret service, the ISI.

The Western allies are wrong – the Taliban are fueled by resentment at foreign occupation of their country, how else can they call on people to fight and die for them?

So far, Pakistan’s weak civilian government has cut supply lines to nato – hardly a problem now since most of what they need comes through Uzbekistan -and given the US fifteen days to leave a base used to launch drone strikes.

Unfortunately, this will not be enough – Pakistan’s military know that there is a perception that they have been seen to be weak, and that a clear demonstration may be needed to warn off Nato, and to more importantly appease her very angry public.

So finally the Chancellor of the Excequer is going to admit what we all have known from the moment he announced his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this parliament, namely that his ill thought out scheme is unrealistic and could yet cause long term damage to the economic health of this country.

If as the Business Secretary claims we are in the midst of an economic equivalent of a war, then perhaps David Cameron and the rest of his well -heeled Notting Hill Set should take a close look at the health of the troops that are the citizens of the country.

Throwing large numbers of people onthe scrapheep will not achieve a recovery – I know economists will not tell you that, they are too busy with the figures to look at the social cost of their theories, however any recovery must be based on a workforce being given a chance to be productive.

There’s no other way – money printing is a short term solution, which only result in a rise in the price of Gold, as savers scramble to protect themselves.

Infrastructure projects will create work, there are again so did public sector jobs in the north of England.

Teenager’s killer freed

Dean Davis: died after being shot in the head

Byline Nayab Chohan

A teenager who was jailed for killing a boy of 13 has walked free  –  six weeks after receiving his sentence. Dean Davis was killed as he watched DVDs with his friends when one of them put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger as a “prank”, believing it could not fire.

His killer, Renelle Coke, 18, was sentenced to two years in prison after the judge at his trial six weeks ago accepted his “genuine distress and remorse” over the shooting.

But Coke, who has already spent a year on remand, has been released under the socalled 50 per cent rule, under which it is usual for a criminal to serve only half of their term.

Dean’s family say they are disgusted that their son’s killer did not even serve the full time of his “derisory” sentence. Because the Attorney-General told them they would not be granted an appeal, they have now instructed their solicitor to bring a private civil claim for damages against Coke.

At the time of the sentencing, Dean’s family told the Evening Standard how they felt let down by the criminal justice system. They said Coke’s two-year sentence had only deepened their grief.

Now Dean’s brother, Warren, 23, an administrator, said: “We are taking this action to get us some justice. I want to highlight what my brother went through. He was the victim here  –  at the time of his death, he was surrounded by adults. They need to take responsibility for the fact that a 13-year-old boy was shot dead while they were there.

“I was thoroughly disgusted by the Attorney-General’s decision. He has robbed us of our chance to get a serious hearing. I don’t know what to say to the judge, except resign  –  he talked to the murderer as if he was the victim … He has been released two days to the year that he killed my brother. How can that be right?”

And Dean’s mother, Sylvia, 41, said: “No one tells us anything. We were told he was out on 30 June. Some people have told us he is already out. I can’t believe the justice system  –  it really isn’t fair to the victim’s family. We have suffered here. We are the ones who have been left with nothing. We have lost our world, our minds, and no one seems to care.”

Coke pleaded guilty to manslaughter and possessing the weapon, which was brought to the house in Walthamstow by another teenager.

The Old Bailey heard he loaded the Valtro 8000FS pistol with four bullets, pointed it at Dean’s head, then played with the hammer mechanism.

The gun fired at point-blank range, leaving Dean with severe injuries from which he died in hospital. Jailing Coke, Judge Hubert Dunn said: “It is an appalling, sad case. You are very young. It is a tragedy you will have to live with for the rest of your life.”

A spokesman for the Attorney-General said: “This was a tragic case and the Attorney-General has extended his deepest sympathies to the victim’s family. The Attorney-General has to take into account the relevant sentencing guidelines when deciding whether to refer a case to the Court of Appeal. His view was that in this case they did not provide grounds for a reference.”

Stuart Garcia, solicitor for Dean’s family, said the Crown Prosecution Service had believed the sentence given to Coke was “unduly lenient”.

He said: “The CPS said in a letter: ‘I would stress the senior prosecutor responsible for the handling of the case was as concerned at the actual sentence imposed’.”

If the television pictures are to be believed Britain is burning.

A post 9/11 generation aware of the power of the media image have attacked their town’s iconic buildings setting them alight.

Trouble began in Tottenham’s Broadwater Farm Estate when a young Black man was shot dead by police.

When the dead man’s family approached their local police station to get some answers – amazingly the police had not spoken to them -a young girl was alleged to have pushed aside and then suddenly there was a night of looting.

The police did not overact – that was the one thing they have got right in this very sorry saga. Small scale rioting – awful for the people trapped in this – followed in some of the poorest boroughs of London, and has touched Liverpool and Birmingham also.

The police will get criticism for everything – but they should have acted fast after shooting a young BLACK man dead in an area where twenty years ago there were riots.

Of course most police officers are nothing like they way they were perceived then.

But appearances count for everything.

Today’s youngsters are very young and those who are rioting have grown up in a background of poverty in the sixth wealthiest country in the world.

Ironically in what is also the world’s first democracy they also have no voice.

Rest in Peace…Qaid-e-Azam

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan will be 64 years old on the fourteenth of August.

The world’s sixth most populated nation, and the second most populated Muslim one after Indonesia, has seen periods of civilian and military rule that have translated into little investment on education or regeneration of its infrastructure.

Over the last sixty three years, four military regimes have ruled the country for some thirty years, whilst periods of civilian government have been marred by accusations of inefficency and corruption.

Those who have been ‘elected’ owe their position to the system of hereditary families that have dominated the country from its birth, a fact brought home by the recent announcement that the inexperienced son of the late Benazir Bhutto intends to contest the 2013 election.

So little surprise that reports reveal a Pakistani youth that is very cynical about democracy in their country.

Pakistan matters because of her strategic position between China and India.  She also shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran which make her a crossroads state, a link to the oil and gas fields of  Central Asia as well as that of Persia, with the means of transporting these resources, as well as her own, through her port city of Karachi.

Today, of course the word terrorism is commonly associated with this country, and as her people have often pointed out it is they who have been its greatest victims.

The emergence of the Tariq-e-Taliban have led to fears that the country’s nuclear arsenal – which makes her the only nuclear state from the Islamic World – twinned with continued instability particularly in her north west frontier may result in that extremists seizing the Atom bomb.

This is of course nonsense, and such talk have to led to suspicions inside Pakistan that the real intention of the war on terror is break up the county with a view to seizing her nuclear arsenal.

Neverthless, whilst political instability continues – the government of Asif Ali Zardari is not popular or well respected, few have forgotten the sight of him on business trip as floods swepted through Pakistan – and there is even more conflict – apart from the war on terror, there is of course the dispute with India over Kashmir, as well as drone attacks in the North West Frontier and a still unexplained raid by America into Islamabad to kill Osama bin Laden – this still young nation will not be able to realise her full potential.

For this is a nation which is rich in minerals and gas in her Baluchistani province, with a cosmopolitan centre at Lahore, an extremely vibrant capital at Islamabad, all which are tied into a dynamic and resilient stock exchange at Karachi.

Recent projects with China to create a properous Baluchistan all point to a bright future.

This however, will not happen unless more money is spent on education – which currently stands at around 2 per cent of the budget – with a more even distribution of the country’s potentially enormous wealth to the poor.

Another neglected source of revenue is of course tourism, afterall this is a nation that is blessed with a rich history both Islamic and non Islamic in the ancient Indus Valley.

For all this to happen, the country would need a sustained period of stability, free of violence with a civilian rule achieved though a democracy that results in a child from the poorest family becoming prime minister, so that long term decisions can be made in investing in the country’s greatest asset – namely her people.

And as for those who dismiss the importance of this nation, they may want to consider this – the most important relationship of this century will be between America and China, a relationship that was forged through Pakistani diplomacy in 1971.

One man who would have loved to seen that and to have been present for Pakistan’s forthcoming birthday is of course her founder, the brilliant lawyer, Muhammad Ali Jinnnah who announced her birth on the fourteen of August, 1947.

Tragically, the Qaid-e-Azam died a year later.
