Russia has sent a message to the outside world

ANALYSIS – The pictures unfolding on our television screens show well armed ‘professional’ troops patrolling the key sites of the Crimea.  By all accounts, the atmosphere is calm and everyone is carrying on their daily duties with some waiving Russian flags, others Ukranian. When they are asked whether they are Russian, the troops do not reply. Since the takeover in Kiev, hundreds of such men have arrived in the Crimea and have  occupied key strategic areas. Initially, they were there to protect the Russian speakers who form the majority of the province but the longer they are there the more this looks like a complete takeover of what to Vladimir Putin is a vital part of his nation’s identity. Russia has been accused by the Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen of putting peace at risk in Europe. The US President Barack Obama has threatened Moscow with economic and political sanctions. Ukraine says that Russia has declared war on her, but could the highly dubious government in Kiev really risk more bloodshed against a far bigger and more dangerous bully than the one it fought for its freedom on her own streets? Russia has sent a message to the outside world – it wants to be treated with respect, and part of that includes no lectures on international law from nations that play fast and loose with its principles when it suits them. As for Ukraine, if it wants to continue with the current political state of affairs in Kiev, it will not only lose its cheap gas supplies but also the Crimea.

Could there be a war over Crimea?

ANALYSIS – With thousands of Russian troops now reported to be in the Crimea, armed gunmen thought to be Russian in control of Parliament and the governor of the province appealing to the Kremlin for assistance, could we be seeing  conflict unfolding in this vital region along the lines of Georgia?
Those who are quoting international law may find that Moscow is in no mood to be dictated to, given what has gone on in Ukraine and of course the Middle East and North Africa.
Crimea is in Russia’s sphere of influence and anyone who wants to argue with that like the former Georgian President did during that conflict will find themselves out in the cold when looking for allies and like that conflict will guarantee a sealed breakup of the country.

What UKIP’s Election showing means

03 Friday May 2013

Tags

Bulgaria, Europe 🇪🇺, Local Elections, Local Elections 2013, News, Politics 💼 🗳 🪖, Romania, UK, UKIP

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

UKIP are the sensation of the 2013 Council Elections.

Their leader, Nigel Farage hailed the results, in which his party took over 140 seats and 25% of the vote in wards, as a ‘game changer’.

And he may not be wrong – all of the mainstream parties, not just the Tories, need to take note of this party, and why so many people chose to vote for them.

For immigration is no longer an issue for the racist BNP, but part of mainstream political discourse.

UKIP’s showing in this election has made sure of that.

All of the parties can no longer stand aloof of this issue, for Farage is no Nick Griffin.

It will not do for David Cameron to make increasing right-wing speeches or to create headline grabbing media events, people on the street need to see concrete results. As for Ed Milliband, well he is going to have explain to voters how the benefits of EU membership outweigh its main disadvantage – immigration with the promise of more next year especially from Bulgaria and Romania.

Gr-exit (or what to do with Greece)

ANALYSIS

You know that there’s a problem when reporters are asking any Greek citizen that appears on television how the next generation intends to behave, will they have learned that you can’t get something for nothing.

You know that there’s a problem when reporters point out that Greek doctors who are known to earn in excess of a million euros, file tax returns claiming that they earn just 14, 000 a year.

Here is a corrupt country blocking the arteries of Europe.

And you know that there’s a problem when another nation’s PM, namely our own David Cameron, frustrated at how Greek politicians have failed to form a government or to indicate whether they intend to implement the next round of austerity cuts to this already austerity battered country, warns Athens  that there are plans for a Greek exit out of the Eurozone.

But how realistic is such a prospect, how would any one have confidence in the Euro again, especially with Italy, Spain and Portugal all  suffering under the weight of debt – and lets not forget Ireland either.

To remove Greece would be a spectacular own goal, that would make the fall of Lehman Brothers look inspired.

For to remove Greece would be hari-kari – Europe may never recover its position in the world, a world where Asia is still potentially the future economic powerhouse.

If the fall of Lehman’s signalled the beginning end of New York as the economic capital of the world, then the exit of Greece will only serve to confirm the end of Europe with its capitals of Paris, Berlin and London.

No one will be able escape the consequences, no one that is who is from the West.

So what to do with Greece – it will have to remain, as a second tier Balkan state which is what was when it was admitted into the Euro on the advice of Goldman Sachs.

And what will that mean- that that nation’s sovereignty will suffer in the same way that the Ottomans had when they were declared bankrupt and were then forced to accept British and French bankers who monitored every aspect of their economy, granting loans on conditions.

In this case, of course those bankers will be German and will hopefully do a better job of curbing corruption and tax avoidance than their Anglo-Saxon cousins who were at the time meant to be helping the Sultan and his office of the Sublime Porte, but who were in reality further undermining the economic foundations of a genuinely multi-ethnic, multi-religious state.

☪️ The Greek Question

ANALYSIS

During the Greek War of Independence, the Sultan who was blamed for many massacres was famously slow to accept defeat and thus allow the rebels their freedom.

Some seventy years later, when Greece was routed by an Ottoman army, the way was open for the reconquest of those lands.

The Sultan though showed no interest in doing so.

For by then, Greece like the other newly created Balkan states were a problem for everyone, including the very European states that had championed their cause.

Today, European Central Bankers are debating the merits of taking Greece out of the Euro, as politicians in Athens are trying to form a government.

Should they stay or should they go – there will be huge implications whatever route is taken, which is why those who make make decisions should like the Sultan also consider their long term implications.

⚽️ Why English Clubs fail in Europe 🏟

09 Friday Mar 2012

The Manchester Clubs were defeated in the first legs of their Europa League fixtures yesterday. In the case of City, losing by one goal to Sporting Lisbon may have had more to do with their own internal issues than with the quality of their opposition who were well organised and held back only by the resolute goalkeeper that is Joe Hart. City looked tired and out of sorts, and still appear to have problems adjusting to Europe, which given the speed of their progress is understandable.

United however, were outplayed outclassed and well out…everything by a team from Spain called Athletic Bilbao.  That United have a one-goal deficit had more to do more with Athletic missing a number of chances than how Alex Ferguson’s men played on the night.

Yes, we have seen the emergence of a new Spanish powerhouse, however, the question has to asked as to what is to become of the English clubs – the Europa League was meant to be Europe’s First Division, well try telling that Athletic who taught the once great European side that was Manchester United how to play with speed, skill and sheer talent.

Arsenal heroics the other night against AC Milan in the Champions League may have been celebrated by the fans, however the truth is they were completely outplayed in the first leg and all Milan had to do was sit back and soak up the pressure for the return fixture at the Emirates.

Robin Van Persie’s miss at the end was not a real reflection of the gap between the two sides.

And Chelsea, who have never really looked like winning the Champions League title ever, have it all to do against Napoli if they are to progress into the quarter-final.

It’s going to take more than getting rid of AVB to come back from a 3-1 defeat here.

Years ago, 2004 if my memory serves me right, a  cab driver gave me the low down on the English game. He believed that English football just did not cut it against the Europeans, something you could clearly see reflected by the continued failure of the national side  and that those foreign players that were lured by the money to play here lost their vitality so that they never the same players ever again.

Trouble is he was right then, and what he said then, is also true today.

Cameron and the Veto

15 Thursday Dec 2011

Tags

Cameron and Europe, david cameron, EU, Europe 🇪🇺, Margaret Thatcher

What are we to make of David Cameron’s decision to use the veto in a proposed EU treaty change – a return to the days of spendid isolation, or just the latest reckless action of an inexperienced prime minister?

Polls suggest the British public are behind him, and he clearly has the Eurosceptics delighted – and some in Europe may have even seen the ghost of Margaret Thatcher in the room, there again I keep seeing a poster of Meryl Streep posing as her on the tube to Bayswater so they are not alone there.

When Cameron entered Downing Street, he made the country aware that the first phone call he took was from the US president – Europe, and India were to follow in that order.

India was not impressed with him during his visit to New Delhi, despite his verbal attack on Pakistan, she reminded him thatBritain was no longer her master and should adjust herself to this reality.

So, Cameron – along with another very vain figure namely that of Nicolas Sarkozy – launched a war against Libya, a sustained bombing campaign that led to the brutal execution of that country’s leader.

We still don’t know the long term consequences of that conflict, as we don’t know of how Britain’s verbal attacks on China will play out, any more than Cameron’s decision to stick his foot into those negotiations over a change in the European Union.

Either way, we all need to be consulted before he goes off and does something else.

The Euro

Elder statesmen in a barren landscape..

With Italy the latest nation to suffer under the burden of being linked to a single currency, very real questions are being asked about the future of the Euro.

TheEconomist says that Europe has not addressed the fundamental changes around her – namely the rise of a younger slimmer  Asia at the cost of this grand once great old man.

Today’s Financial Times outlines a three-trierEurope with France-Germany as the engine, the driver of a system that relegates eastern Europe to the periphery.

Of course, Gordon Brown did warn everyone that France – like Germany – was exposed because of her banks.

So what will become a unit that once touted as a serious economic challenger to the United States of America?

And will things ever be the same again?

The international system created by Europe was never perfect, and frankly the world outside this club of nations was roped into joining it.

Some powers suffered like China, some simply vanished – like the Ottoman Empire, whose loss the Islamic World has been suffering the consequences of to this day, especially in a world order based on power.

The history of the end of the ‘Sick Man of Europe’ can be traced back to the creation of the tiny kingdom of Greece, a cause championed by Shelley and Byron.

The behaviour of the main players at that time towards this once great and now grand old man was racist.

(Ever wonder where Adolf Hitler some of his ideas from?)

Now a century or so on, with the Eurozone crisis sparked by a bankrupt Greece, how will the main players on the international scene deal with their once great and now grand friend.

With America already signalling that she will be looking East, how will China view this potentially barren economic wasteland, which still fights wars against weaker nations, whilst lecturing others about human rights?

🇪🇺 On Europe (..and where it goes after its Greek Crisis) 🇬🇷

28 Tuesday Jun 2011

Tags

China 🇨🇳, Europe 🇪🇺, Eurozone, Germany 🇩🇪, Henry Kissinger

ANALYSIS – Is the current Greek crisis going to be Europe’s Lehman moment, and if so how will this affect how Europe is seen by the rest of the world? Ironically, for the most of the last decade, the European Union was seen by the United States as her only serious economic rival. The problem was, said Henry Kissinger, knowing which phone number to use. Today, Germany and France are exercising their minds and their people’s patience with the best way to solve Greece’s catch-22 – if she is allowed to sink, what will this do to the confidence investors would have in the Euro, and if she is allowed to continue on as before then the black hole is only going to get deeper and deeper.

Europe’s army, Nato, is currently engaged in operations in Afghanistan and Libya, where it has not performed well. The best that can be said of these campaigns is that at least her soldiers are getting some combat experience, which should hold them in good stead should another crisis flare up in the Balkans – few of us will ever forget how useless they were when faced by Milosevic during the break-up of Yugoslavia.

Then, the Americans intervened to preserve Nato, as they have done in Afghanistan and may have to do in Libya.

Trouble is, America will not be able to get Europe out of its current economic crisis.

That appears to be left to China, and she has already indicated which phone number she will be using first – namely that of Germany.
