Gorbachev’s Legacy

How will History remember Mikhail Gorbachev the man who lost Russia her empire?

It is said Russians have rejected him, arguing that he did the job the West had wanted all along.

In the West, it is said that he prevented the Cold War from ending as a hot one.

When this man came to power, Russia was embroiled in a friutless war to pacify Afghanistan, and having listened to what the mothers of the empire were telling him, he pulled his army out.

The evil empire had spent eight years there and left behind Najibullah.

He came from a generation that did not believe the propaganda fed to them by the state that portrayed the West as the enemy that wanted to destroy Russia, so he did not have any difficulty in opening a dialogue with America and encouraging reforms around the idea of glasnost. For that he was swept out of power, as the empire built by Joseph Stalin fell apart and Western economists instigated reforms that brought a Superpower to her knees.

Gorbachev was not a saint by any means, when the people of the Caucasus raised the flag of revolt he sent in the heavy weaponry of a Superpower to deal with them.

However, he did not take his people into costly and ultimately self defeating wars like say Enver Pasha, war minister of the Ottoman Empire, or Winston Churchill, he of Gallipoli and later the Second World War notoriety.

When the Soviet Union collapsed it was – thankfully – relatively bloodless.

There was suffering and hardship, but compare that with what happened with the fall of the Ottomans and Great Britain.

So, perhaps the man who lost his nation an empire may also be known as the man who made the brave decision to end all war and move a step closer to some idea of world peace.

For the moment, with wars raging around the world, that appears to be an illusion, however future generations may yet thank him for ending the War to end all wars.

In this world of nations, there are some people who are clearly a nation, but for various reasons are unable to live in a land that belongs to them.ย  Sometimes – as in South Sudan – there clearly isn’t a nation, however because of Great Power intervention you find their appearance, which is a shame because there are people who have suffered for decades fighting for the right to be free. So, yesterday’s announcement by the Arab League – which has suddenly become a force in international politics – that it will back the Palestinians in their fight to be recognised at the UN as a state is welcome news to those who have long believed that they have been appalling treated by first the UN who did not recognise that they lived on the land now called Israel and by the state itself which has used the symbols, traditions and history of the Jewish faith as a justification to massacre a defenceless civilian population. ย A single day does not go by in the so-called Occupied territories when there isn’t an incident involving the most powerful army in the Middle East and the people it has held captive in West bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem.ย  This has never been a fair fight,ย which the Palestinians – despite the defiance and rhetoric of Hamas – have ever been able to win, which makes the intransigence of the European Union all the more disgusting and the announcement by the Barack Hussain Obama that he would never allow a Palestinian state come into being that much more heart breaking. America has never been a fair broker in this conflict – it knows that – and Obama knows also that he has let down everyone who cried on the day he became the first Black President of the world’s most powerful nation.

Afghanistan

It is often remarked that Great Britain’s was the empire on whom the sun never set. It was also the empire on the whom the never blood never ran dry, which makes the current figures released by the UN all the more ghalling.ย  It says that theย first six months of this year killed more civilians than at anytime through out the current conflict in Afghanistan.ย  From January to June, a total of ย 1,462 civilians were killed, aย 15 per cent increase on the same period last year.ย “The rising tide of violence and bloodshed in the first half of 2011 brought injury and death to Afghan civilians at levels without recorded precedent in the current armed conflict,” the report says. In a stark reminder, last night (Wednesday),ย  at least six more people were killed in a Nato raid on a house in Matun, in Khost province , which local Afghans said were civilians but Nato claim were insurgents.

Media reports always break such figures down to insurgent activity, etc, but the truth is that asย the occupying power, America along withย her Nato allies – just like Great Britain in its heyday –ย  know they are fully responsible for allย combat related deaths because it is their job to ensure a peaceful environment for human beings to get on with their day to day lives.

If they can’t, then they should leave.

Is America losing the propaganda war to Russia Today

Someone’s not happy

If state owned RussiaToday are to be believed they get many million hits on their website every day. Their site which has featured some great video postings including the anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, as well as the now legendary Max Keisar who has been fated by many internet fans including Greek bloggers who wanted to make him their boss, is according to Russia Today being targeted by no less a person as Hilary Clinton. The US Secretary of State believes that the America is losing all the powerful propaganda war to amongst others, Russia, China and Iran.

The internet and how to use it to get your own way is still an area that is baffling media barons and great powers alike.

Video postings if they are compulsive viewing like Max Keisar will always attract fans, whether the organisations promoting him, which also includes Iran’s PressTV, will find their point of view becoming the dominant voice in this arena of many voices is another thing though.
