Oligarch’s Playground

You watch my back..

Those who are wondering how our country could one day pan out, may want to take a look at a £6.5 billion court case currently being played out in a London court between two extremely wealthy Russian businessmen, both of whom profitted from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The men at the centre of this saga are living comfortably here in London, though one has his clean-cut football owner image tarnised somewhat by revelations in court that he paid protection money during the aluminium wars, when it is reported someone was killed every three days. The other is wanted by questioning by Russia – in particular by one Vladimir Putin – for being one of a number of businessmen responsible for walking out of Moscow with a huge portion of the nation’s wealth.

Things may not have been that grand under Communism, but after the fall of the evil empire,  it was literally each man for himself in the ‘Wild West’ – those were the words used in court – that followed.

The ‘new’ money that men such as Roman Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky have brought with them may yet come at a price.

So finally the Chancellor of the Excequer is going to admit what we all have known from the moment he announced his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this parliament, namely that his ill thought out scheme is unrealistic and could yet cause long term damage to the economic health of this country.

If as the Business Secretary claims we are in the midst of an economic equivalent of a war, then perhaps David Cameron and the rest of his well -heeled Notting Hill Set should take a close look at the health of the troops that are the citizens of the country.

Throwing large numbers of people onthe scrapheep will not achieve a recovery – I know economists will not tell you that, they are too busy with the figures to look at the social cost of their theories, however any recovery must be based on a workforce being given a chance to be productive.

There’s no other way – money printing is a short term solution, which only result in a rise in the price of Gold, as savers scramble to protect themselves.

Infrastructure projects will create work, there are again so did public sector jobs in the north of England.

No More Money Printing Please!

America and Deficit

But is he listening?

At last someone is talking sense in America!

Writing in today’s Financial Times, a professor at Columbia University has warned against another round of money printing, otherwise known as Quantative Easing, which has been dubbed QE3 by commentators.

Increasing the money supply yet again is not going get America out of her thirteen trillion dollar deficit – cuts will, something like the cuts seen by Great Britain when she realised post Suez that she no longer had the economy to sustain her military adventures which were part of her manifest destiny.

Of course, that Suez moment was brought about after America reminded her that she was no longer a Great Power.

Will it take China to do likewise with this still wealthy, if vastly overstretched nation that says she is not an empire.

Brothers in Arms?

Are we seeing the first real cracks in the coalition?

No less a man than the chief secretary to the Treasury has signalled that there will be no cut in the 50p rate in income tax.

Anyone considering this move – that is his Conservative collegues who include the London Mayor – was living in “cloud cuckoo land.”

Such a cut – which was used by the Reagan influenced Thatcher government – is meant to unleash the spending potential of those living here, as well as making this country a more attractive place for investors and anyone with a lot of money.

The arguments are there in its favour, the results are of course also there for all to see, the sharp divide between rich and poor, a poor that has no way of getting their voice heard in the land where all is plenty and everyone is free.

Our country was decimated by Thatcher, there probably were very arguments for what she did, and she is still applauded by the business community, however, a consequence of her policies was to create a generation who lived lives that were unrecognisable to their wealthier cousins.

That divide sharpened, despite the efforts of New Labour.

So will the Lib Dems finally live up to their principles and challenge a policy being applauded by their more powerful coalition partners.

Or will they just cave in after being reminded that they owe their position at the heart of government to those more powerful coalition partners.

Raising that Debt Ceiling

US Deficit

The deadline of August 2 is fast approaching and US law makers have not decided whether they are going to raise the debt ceiling, that is whether it is going to have borrow more to sustain its expenditures which include an extraordinary amount on military spending.

It is often remarked that the military takes up a smaller portion of the country’s GDP, and that the real problem lies with social security and medicare.

This may well be the case, however, what benefit does this spending bring to its people and to the people of the world? In the case of military spending, endless hardship and suffering and in the case of welfare, some respite to its citizens for whom there is no American dream.

No one seems to have factored this in to their cold calculations.

It’s the Economy Stupid!

Who’d have thought it!

This country’s GDP grew by 0.2 per cent in the second quarter of this year.

That was considerably less than the 0.7 per cent projected growth forecast.

A variety of factors were blamed for this contraction – the Royal wedding, wasn’t that supposed to bring in money, the weather, there may be a point here the weather has been very testing to everyone, etc. News reports have carried different points of view from the inexperienced Chancellor of the Exequer to the equally inexperienced leader of the opposition.

This country is still generating a trillion pounds a year, something that hasn’t changed.

That means George Osbourne has not done anything wrong there, where the danger lies is in his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this government – that will cause real long term damage.

Playing the Long Game?

Ben Bernanke is currently explaining to an influential committee how his nation is going to tackle their astronomical debt burden. Critics say that apart from printing money, the chairman of the Federal Reserve hasn’t got any other plan. The time may come, one commentator claimed on yesterday’s CNBC, when China will call in that debt, it may well that Suez moment, when America reminded Great Britain that it was no longer a Great Power in a world dominated by two superpowers. So will China remind America that it is no longer has the economy to sustain its current military adventures? And has the miltary got too much power in the People’s Republic? There is no doubt that a move get America to pull back on its military engagements would play well in the Third World, increasing the incredible amount of goodwill that it already has among the weaker nations of the world. But China, despite its vast pools of wealth is still a very poor country, with millions of people still waiting to taste that Chinese miracle everyone keeps telling them that they are part of, and worse still, those people still have to find somewhere to live, in a land where there is too many people and not enough land. Having seen how the one true superpower in the world has squandered her wealth on expensive hitech weapons fighting inconclusive wars,  there doesn’t appear to be the taste for any military confrontation either – remember China lost a million men at Korea and her last adventure resulted in a thrashing from General Giap’s Vietnamese army.  So, my guess is that Ben Bernanke is betting that China has absolutely nothing to gain from crashing the system and far too much lose also from acting as a military superpower, which means that if  America is a status quo power, then her emerging rival is no great challenger, it’s not in its interest to be so.  As a result, the chairman of the Federal Reserve isn’t going to change his strategy, which is exactly what?
