A Poisoned Chalice (for whoever ‘protects’ Afghanistan)

Afghanistan

Hamid Karzai says his country has chosen India to restore the peace. He says the decision was based on India’s ecomony and the freedom of it’s people.

With the Americans clearly preparing for an exit after ten fruitless years, Afghanistan’s president is throwing his lot behind New Delhi in a way that reminds one of President Najibullah.

Then, the Russian-backed dictator remained in power whilst rival gangs fought over control of Kabul.

Finally. the Taliban hanged him. He had fled to the UN for safety.

Karzai has presided over a thoroughly corrupt administration, which has lost high profile figures in a number of spectacular attacks recently.

When America refers to the Indian army, it reminds one of the way that the British talked up the French in theΒ run up to the Second World War.

Germany overcame them in a blitzkreig.

One thing is certain aboutall this, with the Americans drawing downΒ their troop numbers, who ever decides to takeover or assist her in the ‘new’ Afghanistan is inheriting a poisoned chalice.

Is America really a Fair Broker?

Palestine

The Palestinian leadership of Mahmoud Abbas says that America’s opposition to her bid for nationhood has seriously diminished the superpower’s role as a fair broker in the region.

Watching President Obama at the UN Grand Assembly two days ago it was hard not to agree with this.

The American President said the Jewish people had suffered the duel fates of being expelled from their historic homeland some two thousand years ago, and the Holocaust.

Of course, the Palestinians had nothing to do with either.

Obama simply spelled out America’s position which was cemented after the six-day war when the tiny state of Israel became a Middle Eastern Superpower.

She had proved herself, and would from now onwards receive America’s full backing.

Abbas like the rest of us had probably fallen for that talk of change that was promised when Obama first came to power.

πŸͺ– Beginning to resemble the fall of Saigon.. πŸ‡¦πŸ‡«

America and her allies are losing the war in Afghanistan.

In the latest incident, gunmen have targeted the US embassy as well as Isaf’s headquarters.

Other ‘spectaculars’ include the attack on a US base on September 11 which killed two civilians and injured 77 US soldiers.

The Taliban had marked another anniversary in equally deadly manner when it attacked the British Council on the day some eighty years or so back when Imperial Britian was evicted from Afghanistan.

And there was the downing of that helicopter -which turned to be carrying a number of the special forces responsible for the assassination of Osama Bin laden in Pakistan.

Each attack is met with a fresh line from the occupying powers.

This time, it is the ability of Afghan soldiers to maintain the peace after the departure of Isaf.

America and her allies are losing this war.

The sooner they realise this the better for everyone – including the Afghan civilians who have suffered the most from this decade-long war.

Sabra and Shatila (the war crime no one saw)

ANALYSIS – A tenth anniversary is shortly about to be reached.

It was the day of those of unprecedented attacks on the United States of America by terrorists.

That year was of course 2001 and the date September eleventh.

Almost three thousand human beings perished as eighteen highly determined young men converted airliners into human bombs and shocked the world.

For many Muslims of course there is also another date, or more precisely dates, that shaped our awareness of the world.

The year was 1982, the dates September 16 to 18.

Over those three days some three thousand defenceless civilians were massacred by Christian Phalange militia in the refugee camps of Sabra and shatila in Southern Lebanon.

The people who were killed in the most appalling way were the Palestinians, who were meant to be protected by the Israeli army who had just invaded Lebanon to destroy the Palestinian Liberation Organisation.

The Israeli army simply floodlit the camps at night so their allies could have a clearer view, as they pursued their murderous path.

It is often said that the world changed after the events of 2001 – that is clearer the case.

Things changed after Sabra and Shatila, also.

For the Israeli army succeeded in destroying the PLO, however, in their place came first Hezbollah and then later Hamas, and just as importantly Muslims around the world began to look at the Palestinians as unquely theirs, something that was tapped into by Saddam Hussein and later by Osama bin Laden, the man blamed for launching those attacks on America on September 11, 2001.

America and Deficit

But is he listening?

At last someone is talking sense in America!

Writing in today’s Financial Times, a professor at Columbia University has warned against another round of money printing, otherwise known as Quantative Easing, which has been dubbed QE3 by commentators.

Increasing the money supply yet again is not going get America out of her thirteen trillion dollar deficit – cuts will, something like the cuts seen by Great Britain when she realised post Suez that she no longer had the economy to sustain her military adventures which were part of her manifest destiny.

Of course, that Suez moment was brought about after America reminded her that she was no longer a Great Power.

Will it take China to do likewise with this still wealthy, if vastly overstretched nation that says she is not an empire.

Gorbachev’s Legacy

How will History remember Mikhail Gorbachev the man who lost Russia her empire?

It is said Russians have rejected him, arguing that he did the job the West had wanted all along.

In the West, it is said that he prevented the Cold War from ending as a hot one.

When this man came to power, Russia was embroiled in a friutless war to pacify Afghanistan, and having listened to what the mothers of the empire were telling him, he pulled his army out.

The evil empire had spent eight years there and left behind Najibullah.

He came from a generation that did not believe the propaganda fed to them by the state that portrayed the West as the enemy that wanted to destroy Russia, so he did not have any difficulty in opening a dialogue with America and encouraging reforms around the idea of glasnost. For that he was swept out of power, as the empire built by Joseph Stalin fell apart and Western economists instigated reforms that brought a Superpower to her knees.

Gorbachev was not a saint by any means, when the people of the Caucasus raised the flag of revolt he sent in the heavy weaponry of a Superpower to deal with them.

However, he did not take his people into costly and ultimately self defeating wars like say Enver Pasha, war minister of the Ottoman Empire, or Winston Churchill, he of Gallipoli and later the Second World War notoriety.

When the Soviet Union collapsed it was – thankfully – relatively bloodless.

There was suffering and hardship, but compare that with what happened with the fall of the Ottomans and Great Britain.

So, perhaps the man who lost his nation an empire may also be known as the man who made the brave decision to end all war and move a step closer to some idea of world peace.

For the moment, with wars raging around the world, that appears to be an illusion, however future generations may yet thank him for ending the War to end all wars.
