An insurgent rocket attack on a US air base in Afghanistan has damaged the plane of America’s top military officer.

Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff had arrved in the country following a spate of ‘green on blue’ kiilings.

He was not near the plane at the time.

However, two US maintenance crew were slightly injured.

The attack happened late on Monday night at the US air base in Bagram.

Gen Dempsey had arrived on Monday in a C-17 transport aircraft which was parked at Bagram.

Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, had met Nato commanders and officials for talks after the death of a Nato soldier on Sunday who was shot dead by an Afghan in a police uniform.

The soldier was the 10th US soldier to die in this way in two weeks.

Two American soldiers were killed in another incident on Friday.

And six were killed in a single day on 10 August.

Some 130,000 (“blue”) Nato troops are fighting insurgents in Afghanistan, alongside 350,000 (“green”) Afghans.

So far, 40 members of the  International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) personnel – most of the victims Americans – have been killed by members of the Afghan security forces this year.

There were 35 such deaths in all of 2011

A statement from Nato’s Isaf force said shrapnel from “an indirect fire round” had damaged the plane as well as a Nato helicopter.

The general was in his room at the time of the attack, according to officials.

A Woman is executed outside Kabul

09 Monday Jul 2012

ANALYSIS

Adam was the first Prophet of God, and Muslims believe that Muhammed was the last.  What the last Prophet of God would have made of the images that emerged from outside Kabul yesterday, one can never really know.

My guess is that a man who was comfortable in the company of women, who actively encouraged women to be firm in their opinions, and who fell in love with a strong woman fifteen years his senior, would have been as horrified as everyone else with the video that was posted online.

The 22-year-old woman was crouched with her back to her executioners, before being shot. That action was also accompanied with the words ‘Allah -o-Akbar’.

The video with its chilling echo of that execution in a stadium of a woman in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan more than a decade ago is of course a reminder of many things – the brutality of a culture marked by decades of senseless war, the fact that men from certain cultures still have not learned to behave in a civilised, (with akale) manner, etc, etc.

Perhaps, the most depressing thing though is that the Taliban don’t seemed to have learned from being in the wilderness for more than a decade.

The best thing they could do is to look at the Hadith of the Prophet, which clearly documents HOW a Muslim should treat a woman.

America had “run out of patience” with Pakistan, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said during an unscheduled visit to Afghanistan.

The Pentagon Chief was speaking to troops gathered at the airport in Kabul. The comments brought to an end Panetta’s week-long trip to Asia  during which he explained the new US military strategy, which calls for a shift in strategic focus to the Asia-Pacific region.

“We are reaching the limits of our patience here, ” Panetta said.

“It is difficult to achieve peace in Afghanistan as long as there is safe haven for terrorists in Pakistan.

“It is very important for Pakistan to take steps. It is an increasing concern, the issue of safe haven.”

“..we have every responsibility to defend ourselves and… we’ve got to put pressure on Pakistan to take them on as well”.

Bangladesh, where Democracy fails the People

25 Friday May 2012

Bangladesh, Distant Echoes, India, Islam, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Pakistan, Politics πŸ’Ό πŸ—³ πŸͺ–, Template News

ANALYSIS

A democracy where the heads of the two main opposition parties are women,Β should beΒ an excellent springboard for any modern state and an excellent showcase for the world. Trouble is, this is Bangladesh one of the poorest countries on earth, whose 170mΒ people are going have to endure another round ofΒ political infighting between the daughter of a former president and the widow of another.

Even by South Asian standards – remember Bangladesh is neighbours with India and was once east Pakistan –Β the power games betweenΒ Sheikh Hasina, leader of the AwamiΒ party and the current prime minister, and Khaleda Zia, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have beenΒ stupid and dangerous.Β Here isΒ a country where democracy has not been able to deliver anything concrete to the man on the street,Β whilst the elected leaders of the two main parties have spent most of their time in officeΒ trying to score points off each other.

Perhaps the best example of this, is the warΒ crimes tribunal which was set up to investigateΒ atrocities in the 1971 civil war and which is looking like an attempt to discreditΒ the BNP and her Islamist allies.

Awful things were committed during that conflict and after in revenge, trouble isΒ no one seems to be interested in what happened after whenΒ Indian trained militias savagely punished anyone that had supportedΒ Pakistan.

On top of this, the AwamiΒ League has targettedΒ a Nobel laureateΒ who pioneered MicrofinanceΒ and created the GrameenΒ Bank,Β Mohammad Yunus. His crime appears to be that he dared to set up a “third force” in Bangladesh politics.

Today, Bangladesh which fought to be free of oneΒ masterΒ is the only country on the subcontinent to accept India as the region’s superpower, something that the smaller – in terms of population – war ravaged Sri Lanka has not done to this day.

And domestically, the country which was once the breadbasket of Pakistan, sees street protests, disappearances and murders of opposition leaders.

All the while, Β ordinary Bengalis who struggleΒ with food and fuel price rises, chronic power cuts andΒ still no new roadsΒ Β are contributing through the textile industry to an economy with 6 per cent growth with the promise of a healthy middle class in the near future.

So, with a general electionΒ eighteen monthsΒ away, one has to wonder what exactly would be gained from such an enterpriseΒ at this moment, when theΒ country’sΒ politicians seem so distracted from the real issues.

How to Repair Pakistan – US Relations (Change the President) πŸ‡΅πŸ‡° – πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

ANALYSIS

If, as appears likely, Mitt Romney will defeat the current incumbent at the White House in November’s Presidential election, one country will look forward to the eviction of Barack Obama – namely that of Pakistan.

From the outset, even before he was elected, Obama spoke of bombing PAKIStan and true to his word, drone strikes, which will surely be remembered in the same way as GITMO was for George Bush, have marked this Presidency – the last one on Wednesday in the so-called tribal belt killing three people.

And then there was the Nato strike which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, for which Isaf has still not apologised, and which even to the most impartial of observers looked like an act of war, a pre-emptive strike.

At Chicago, the President of Pakistan, who is hated within his own country for being an American ‘puppet’ demanded that the US pay Β£3, 200 for every Nato lorry that will pass through Pakistan, if she was to reopen a border crossing closed after that fatal incident involving 24 Pakistani soldiers.

And today comes the first confirmation – if not official – that the Americans got their man with the jailing of the doctor who helped the CIA find Osama bin Laden.

Shakil Afridi who had charged with treason and for running a fake vaccination programme was jailed for 30 years in Khyber district.

The raid which was celebrated in the US angered the Pakistanis, who claimed that it was a further violation of their nation’s sovereignty.

So if indeed, a Republican is heading for the CEO’s job at Washington, then the people of Pakistan will be the first to be out on the streets to celebrate.

Rupert Murdoch at the Leveson Inquiry

ANALYSIS

Yesterday,Β he described Gordon Brown as ‘unbalanced’, someone who had declared war on News CorporationΒ in reponse toΒ The Sun switchingΒ its support from Labour to David Cameron’s Conservatives.

Today, Rupert MurdochΒ admitted that he had missedΒ the ‘cover-up’ at the News of the World, a newspaper he also said should have been closed down long ago.

When asked who the buck stoppedΒ with at all his newspapers, he replied the Editor, he, Rupert Murdoch, had of course overall responsibility, however he had delegated.

If the 81-year-old the standing of the media mogul had suffered from the phone hacking scandal, then his appearance todayΒ and yesterday at the Royal Courts of JusticeΒ may have gone someway to recovering any lost ground.

GreatΒ powerΒ isΒ best exercised when it is understated, especially when it is exposed before the glare of theΒ media spotlight.

And that is exactly what the world saw, asΒ arguably one of the most powerful men in the world explained how he did not intefere in the running of his newspapers,Β content or welfare of staffΒ and how he closed the NoW afterΒ revelations that the phone of tragic schoolgirlΒ Milly DowlerΒ had been hacked. He said he “could feel the blast coming in the window, almost”, as soon as the story broke.

All this will of course make the headlines, however what was perhaps more telling was how he viewed the future of the newspaper industry in the midst of the current electronic revolution.

He gave newspapers another ten years, this from a man for whom running a newspaper is clearly a passion.

How would the new media make money, well the Huffington Post was getting millions of hits but was struggling to make anything.

There are bloggers out there whose work can reach any where.

Work can be pilfered and then put out there with little or no respect for intellectual property rights.

If this wasΒ some else talking, then it could be dismissed as yet another world view, however here is the owner of The Sun (as well as Sunday),Β The Times and The Sunday Times admitting that he could not see a long term future for the newspaper industry.
