TEMPLATE NEWS

Feb 2002 – Bush says Taliban and al Qaida prisoners were not prisoners of war as defined by Geneva Convention.

Mar 2002 – Abu Zubaydah captured in Pakistan by Pakistani authorities and CIA. He suffers bullet wounds. Wrongly assessed by CIA officers to be high enough in al Qaida. They overstate the importance of the information he might hold. Rendered from Pakistan, following a debate within the CIA, to a secret detention centre known as DETENTION SITE GREEN in an undisclosed country.

Mar 2002 – FBI question Zubaydah at Site Green his condition deteriorates and he is taken to hospital. He says that he is prepared to talk – reveals details that are already on CIA databases. CIA debate how they will interrogate him whilst he’s in hospital.

Apr 13, 2002 – CIA implement ‘new interrogation programme’ by sending a psychologist to Zubaydah whilst he’s still in hospital. Zubaydah nods when the psychologist tells him that he’s got ‘a most important secret to tell.’

April 15, 2002 – CIA disappointed that Zubaydah had not disclosed this secret sedate him and transfer him to Site Green. He wakes in astonishment at his new surroundings – the intention is to catch him at his most vulnerable. He finds himself in a white room with an air conditioner and four halogen lights pointed into the cell.

CIA lied over ‘brutal’ interrogations of suspects. CIA threatened to kill families of detainees.

TEMPLATE BREAKING NEWS

The Senate Intelligence committee report looked at CIA Detention, Rendition and Intelligence programme from 2002 to 2007 when people were held in secret prisons around the world and tortured to extract intelligence.
The programme was closed by President Obama in 2009. The Senate had began the inquiry in March 2009 after an investigation into the CIA destroying videotapes of interrogations in December 2007.
The Torture Report looked at 20 cases and chairwoman Dianne Feinstein said the techniques ‘regularly led to information that was fabricated. ‘
One detention centre known as the Salt Pit in Afghanistan was described as a ‘dungeon ‘.
Techniques used in detention centres during the CIA programme included – waterboarding, sleep deprivation,ย slapping, humiliation, wallings and exposure to cold, placing people into ice water baths.
The Interrogations took place over days.
And despite knowing torture did not work before 9/11, the CIA continued to use them. The report found that using torture did not yield any ‘action able intelligence’. No imminent threat was found and the treatment had led to false information that was acted upon.
The treatment of Abu Zubaydah, August 4-21 2002, which had prompted the report into the CIA was described as non stop, his waterboarding was so severe at a detention centre in Thailand, he became ‘unresponsive with bubbles rising out of his mouth.’
Another suspect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded, received rectal hydration or feeding. He later retracted claims he made whilst under enhanced interrogation
At least 119 prisoners were detained in CIA secret prisons programme – 21 more than previously admitted with 26 wrongly imprisoned.
They had been held in detention centres in Thailand, Poland, Romania, Lithuania and other places before being ordered by George Bush to be transferred to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Osama bin Laden – when state assassination becomes the norm ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

ANALYSIS – The assassination of Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad, Pakistan has become many things – a glossy film, a badge of honour for an American President as well as the navy seal who pulled the trigger, and the subject of mass debate and even comedy. One reaction that has been largely absent though is that of horror.  This was a state execution in another country, the type that only that pariah state called Israel has conducted, an act that also resulted in the killing of a woman in front of her children. Barack Obama who came to the White House with so many hopes from those who voted for him not to mention the rest of the world, was pictured with his inner circle that included perhaps the future woman President of the USA, watching the events unfold in a grainy dark fluorescent background with the figures lit up by the colours of their armour and weaponry as if they were on a PlayStation.
When the Americans invaded Iraq, it was awful and criminal, perhaps Washington’s disregard for international law was best captured by the pack of cards their marines distributed amongst the general populous in Baghdad, with the ‘ace’ of course being the deposed dictator, Saddam Hussein who was later hanged on the verdict of a kangaroo court. But a lot more has happened since –  Colonel Gaddafi didn’t even get to a court he was simply stripped, paraded and executed in cold blood, his slaughter like that of Saddam’s murder was captured on camera phone and went on to do the rounds as a grim and disturbing snuff film. And then there was the slaying of the world’s number one terrorist which got the Hollywood treatment, as well as crowds outside the White House applauding the event as if they were at an NFL soccer match.

image

Never before has America been so public in the pursuit of its enemies, so flagrant in flouting any international laws, in breaching sovereignty whenever it chooses, in ‘taking-out’ people in the form of drone strikes or raids like that of Osama bin Laden or in kidnappings such as that of Pakistani scientist Aafia Siddiqui, who left her home in Karachi one morning and is now languishing in a detention centre in Texas. And surely the question is now that the world has accepted all this and much, much more, what is going is the world’s largest military power going to do next – and what message are China and Russia going to take from this.
