ANALYSIS

What a difference a day makes, or in this case a month or so.

As David Cameron and some one called Nick Clegg – where are you my friend? – celebrate two years since they appeared under the sun in the Downing St garden all smiles before the press,  the Conservatives are lurching from crisis to crisis.

Admitting that they got wrong when they scrapped the jets ordered by the last government for this country’s two aircraft carriers.

They did of course make a big issue of this at the time.

Gordon Brown’s government had mismanaged the economy and wasted public money and the spending £5bn on jets that this nation did not need proved their point.

Well, Britain hit double-dip recession territory within the time frame predicted by Brown  – that despite the radical cuts to the public sector announced by Chancellor George Osborne. This news opened the whole country’s eyes to the coalition’s claims to having a credible economic plan and they still want to have a go at welfare, education and health.

Don’t underestimate the magnitude of the defeat at the local elections – David Cameron did not win the general election outright and has just seen his party wiped out everywhere except in London, where the Mayor bucked the trend though he lost heavily in the London assembly.

So, as Jeremy Hunt faces calls to stand down against a backdrop of a Leveson inquiry that is appearing to be more damaging to Cameron and those former Murdoch employees around him, who include his Education Secretary Michael Gove, the question is what next on the rocky road to May 2015?

Cameron’s Adventure into Nigeria

Locator map of Nigeria
ANALYSIS

Italy has said that it was ‘inexplicable’ that the UK had not informed them of the decision to send in British special forces to rescue two hostages – one British, the other Italian –  held in Nigeria.

The failed rescue bid resulted in the deaths of Chris McManus, 28, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, and Franco Lamolinara.
The operation which was conducted jointly by British Special forces and Nigerian military comes at a time when media reports here are referring to a growing insurgency in the north which is being blamed on a group called Boku Haram, which it is said has links to Al Qaeda.

Whether the gun men have anything to do with all of that has yet to be proved, however you can establish a number of facts about Nigeria and what may be driving any trouble – the north which is mainly Christian has a monopoly of the oil which the government of GoodLuck Jonathan has not shared equally with the South.

What’s more oil companies – which are Western – have cut deals that are too generous to them.

And of course there is our Prime Minister – the Tony Blair clone – who having got a taste for colonial glory in Libya has followed in his predecessor’s footsteps by an adventure into Nigeria.

Unlike the one into Sierra Leone however, this one has failed and those who continue to question David Cameron’s judgment on the international stage have been left wondering what he’s going to do next.

Cameron and the Veto

15 Thursday Dec 2011

What are we to make of David Cameron’s decision to use the veto in a proposed EU treaty change – a return to the days of spendid isolation, or just the latest reckless action of an inexperienced prime minister?

Polls suggest the British public are behind him, and he clearly has the Eurosceptics delighted – and some in Europe may have even seen the ghost of Margaret Thatcher in the room, there again I keep seeing a poster of Meryl Streep posing as her on the tube to Bayswater so they are not alone there.

When Cameron entered Downing Street, he made the country aware that the first phone call he took was from the US president – Europe, and India were to follow in that order.

India was not impressed with him during his visit to New Delhi, despite his verbal attack on Pakistan, she reminded him thatBritain was no longer her master and should adjust herself to this reality.

So, Cameron – along with another very vain figure namely that of Nicolas Sarkozy – launched a war against Libya, a sustained bombing campaign that led to the brutal execution of that country’s leader.

We still don’t know the long term consequences of that conflict, as we don’t know of how Britain’s verbal attacks on China will play out, any more than Cameron’s decision to stick his foot into those negotiations over a change in the European Union.

Either way, we all need to be consulted before he goes off and does something else.

The Autumn Audit, 2011

Staring into the abyss..

This country will face five more years of cut backs – otherwise known as austerity. It will mean that when the coalition government runs for re-election in 2015, they will do so with the promise that there will two more years of “tough choices” before the deficit will be eliminated.

During this time, the axe will fall on 700, 000 public sector jobs, so taking the number of jobless past the three million mark – already over one million of our young people have little prospect of finding a job in the current challenging climate.

Last night, Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the Treasury, informed Newsnight that the Lib Dems were right behind the plan for more cuts.

The opposition says the cuts are too fast.

They are right – the social consequences of the planned austerity measures are horrendous, which is something that the young, well heeled George Osbourne does not seemed to factored into his equations.

However, the two Eds need to come up with ideas as to how propel the economy foward – now is not the time for political point scoring or in fighting, hopefully Labour has learned its lesson from the last time there was a prolonged period of Conservative government, then first Tony Benn and then an overconfident Neil Kinnock ensured three terms of Thatcher, which was followed by John Major.

Arguably the cost to our children will be much worse if David Cameron and George Osbourne are allowed to continue.

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, opportunities for those born into modest incomes have been on the slide since 1970.

One can imagine what they will like on May 7, 2015.

So finally the Chancellor of the Excequer is going to admit what we all have known from the moment he announced his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this parliament, namely that his ill thought out scheme is unrealistic and could yet cause long term damage to the economic health of this country.

If as the Business Secretary claims we are in the midst of an economic equivalent of a war, then perhaps David Cameron and the rest of his well -heeled Notting Hill Set should take a close look at the health of the troops that are the citizens of the country.

Throwing large numbers of people onthe scrapheep will not achieve a recovery – I know economists will not tell you that, they are too busy with the figures to look at the social cost of their theories, however any recovery must be based on a workforce being given a chance to be productive.

There’s no other way – money printing is a short term solution, which only result in a rise in the price of Gold, as savers scramble to protect themselves.

Infrastructure projects will create work, there are again so did public sector jobs in the north of England.

If the television pictures are to be believed Britain is burning.

A post 9/11 generation aware of the power of the media image have attacked their town’s iconic buildings setting them alight.

Trouble began in Tottenham’s Broadwater Farm Estate when a young Black man was shot dead by police.

When the dead man’s family approached their local police station to get some answers – amazingly the police had not spoken to them -a young girl was alleged to have pushed aside and then suddenly there was a night of looting.

The police did not overact – that was the one thing they have got right in this very sorry saga. Small scale rioting – awful for the people trapped in this – followed in some of the poorest boroughs of London, and has touched Liverpool and Birmingham also.

The police will get criticism for everything – but they should have acted fast after shooting a young BLACK man dead in an area where twenty years ago there were riots.

Of course most police officers are nothing like they way they were perceived then.

But appearances count for everything.

Today’s youngsters are very young and those who are rioting have grown up in a background of poverty in the sixth wealthiest country in the world.

Ironically in what is also the world’s first democracy they also have no voice.

David Cameron had an unsual visitor over the weekend.

I say unusual because he says that he is the democratically elected President of Pakistan, and yet I have still to find a single Pakistani who says that he ever voted for Asif Ali Zardari.

When Pakistan is mentioned in the press, and that is by no means just in the western press, the words ‘troubled’, ‘on the brink’ and  ‘descent’ are often accompanied as usual descriptions. Pakistani national identity is not very strong, it is claimed, by no less a person than the former Balouchistani rebel, Ahmed Rashid, who has really come of his own since the events of that dark Tuesday in the year 2001.

Yet, a casual conversation with any Pakistani wil tell you other wise.

It is widely believed that the root cause of terrorism in Pakistan is America and India. Ametica’s standing as a friend is belied by the CIA-sponsored drone attacks that continue to this day and by the fact they appear to have carte blanche when it comes to their dealings with Islamabad. Go further, to the north west – to the so called tribal areas, a name that was out of date when it was first used by the colonial power of Great Britain – and those people, a  thousand of whom were killed by drone strikes last year, will tell you that the Great Power that says that it is their country’s friend is aiming break up their nation, so that they can seize the atom bomb with the long term aim of a war with first Iran and then finally with that emerging Great Power that is China.

Listening to this, reminds me of the time when The Ottoman Empire – which Pakistan does bear some resemblance to – was making its mind up with regards to which was its real friend, the emerging power of Germany or that of Great Britain. Then, there were many warnings from their former allies of the dangers of allying itself with the dreaded Kaiser.

Pakistan’s relationship with China is solid, however America believes that there is always a  price to be paid for such closeness to the much feared People’s Republic.

That may be the case, but for the moment, the people of Pakistan – a large proportion of whom are below the age of 25 –  have to live through the everyday cycle of violence, bombings, whilst having watch to politicians of the calibre of President Asif Ali Zardari jet around the world to meet democratically-elected politicians like David Cameron.

Throwing stones at China 🇨🇳

Boxer Rebellion, China 🇨🇳, david cameron, Distant Echoes, George Osborne, Human Rights, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Politics 💼 🗳 🪖, Template News, UK, USA 🇺🇸

ANALYSIS – The year is 1900, and a major rebellion is underway in the major provinces of China. The young men who are in revolt are objecting to the West ‘taking over’ their country. They attack all symbols as they see it of all this western intrusion, including railways. The Boxer rebellion is put down by an international force that includes Great Britain, France, Italy and the emerging nations of Japan, the United States of America and Germany. It would take China more than eighty years to emerge from the weight of unfair treaties and capitulations that the European nations had demanded from her, in what they called the open door. Today, China has become a superpower, a serious rival to America for global leadership, so serious that Obama has identified himself as his country’s first ‘Pacific’ President, who may also be the last to take Europe seriously. So, Wen Jiabao’s visit to London yesterday should have been a wonderful opportunity for David Cameron to foster a closer relationship with this economic powerhouse, given this country’s current predicament. Instead, we had the now customary spectacle of the Chinese Premier being lectured in front of the press on human rights by the man currently in the middle of a questionable war in Libya.

China’s human rights record in Tibet and Kashgar, as well as her attitude to freedom of expression are well documented and are rightly highlighted. However, those who lecture should also take a long hard at themselves – China emerged as a superpower after a horrendous period in her history which some of the nations who came to put down the Boxer rebellion had a hand in creating.

If China has moved on from that time, then perhaps so should Great Britain, who should also stop treating a former colony as a developing economy and take a leaf from the United States of America. If a report in The Financial Times is to be believed, Britain has lost its standing in China’s view, rating below Germany, France, Italy and Spain.  Hopefully, Wen Jiabao and the Chinese leadership will settle down to the line of thinking that a large number of us over here share, that Cameron does not know what he is doing, and that perhaps more disturbingly, he has appointed a Chancellor who is completely clueless.
