πŸ’· Nigerian Governor ‘stole Β£160million over eight years’ πŸ‡³πŸ‡ͺ

A fraudster who “tricked his way” into becoming a  governor of one Nigeria’s oil producing states has pleaded guilty to 10 counts of money-laundering and conspiracy to defraud at a London Court.

James Ibori, a former governor of one of Nigeria’s oil-producing states, was accused by British police of stealing $250m (Β£160m) over eight years. He changed his plea to guilty as  his trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court was about to begin and admitted stealing money from Delta state and laundering it in London through a number of offshore companies.

Ibori was arrested in 2010 in Dubai and then extradited to London.

Some $35m of his alleged UK assets were frozen in 2007.

Prosecuting QC Sasha Wass said Mr Ibori, 53, had “tricked” his way into becoming Delta state governor, by giving a false date of birth and claiming he had no criminal record.

“He was never the legitimate governor and there was effectively a thief in government house. As the pretender of that public office, he was able to plunder Delta state’s wealth and hand out patronage.”

He is due to be sentenced on 16 April.

Mr Ibori’s wife, Theresa, his sister, Christine, his mistress, Udoamaaka Okoronkwo, and his London solicitor, Bhadresh Gohil, have all been convicted of money-laundering.

Their convictions could only be reported on Monday after reporting restrictions were lifted.

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had asked the UK’s Metropolitan police to look into the ex-governor’s financial affairs.

“The vast sums of money involved were used to fund Mr Ibori’s lavish lifestyle,” Detective Inspector Paul Whatmore, the officer in charge of the investigation, said.

“We will now be actively seeking the confiscation of all of his stolen assets so they can be repatriated for the benefit of the people of Delta State.”

πŸ’Έ Being Poor in the Richest Country on Earth πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

ANALYSIS

Once upon a time, the BBC’s Panorama used to beΒ the current affairs programme to watch. Since its revamp it has largely disappointed. Last night though was an exception – and what an exception.

America has suffered under the recession, which many commentators are comparing to the Great Depression of the 30s.

If what was shown last night was anything to go by, then those voices may not be wrong – with one million children homeless, coming from by and large from the kind of families the American dream is all about, and politicians largely unable and often unwilling to do anything concrete right nowΒ to prevent the communities of homeless people springing up literally down the road, the poor in the richest countryΒ on earth on are going to have a fight on their hands, especially since Republicans like Mitt Romney are open admirers of our own Margaret Thatcher and Newt GringichΒ are arguing for a returnΒ toΒ child labour.

Strangely enough, not one of those condemning the poor for being a burden on the state are looking at the real reason for the astronomicalΒ budget deficit – quoted in the programme as one trillion dollars, but it is much, muchΒ larger than that – namely the cost of imperial overstretch.

Oligarch’s Playground

You watch my back..

Those who are wondering how our countryΒ could one day pan out, may want to take a look at aΒ Β£6.5 billion court case currently being played out in a London court between two extremely wealthy Russian businessmen, both ofΒ whom profitted from the collapse of the Soviet Union. TheΒ men at theΒ centre of this saga are living comfortablyΒ here in London, though one has his clean-cut football owner image tarnised somewhat by revelations in court that heΒ paid protection moneyΒ during the aluminium wars, when it is reportedΒ someone was killed every three days. The other is wanted by questioning by Russia – in particular by oneΒ Vladimir Putin – for being one of a number of businessmen responsible for walking out of Moscow with a hugeΒ portionΒ ofΒ the nation’s wealth.

Things may not have been that grandΒ under Communism, but after the fall of the evil empire,Β  it was literally each man for himselfΒ inΒ the ‘Wild West’ – those were the words used in court – thatΒ followed.

The ‘new’ money that men such as Roman Abramovich and Boris BerezovskyΒ have brought with them may yet come at a price.

Canadian Sikh gains high office

Ujjal Dosangh at meeting
Ujjal Dosanjh: One of the first successful politicians from South Asia

By South Asia analyst Nayab Chohan

A Sikh who was born in the Punjab has become the first Indo-Canadian to serve as a premier in the province of British Columbia.

Ujjal Dosanjh is one of the first politicians with connections to South Asia to hold a senior political office in Canada.

In fact, he is regarded by some Canadian political commentators as the most sucessful Asian politician in North America.

Illustrious career

The 52 year-old has had an illustrious political career.

He was an attorney general in British Columbia before his recent election as the leader of the province’s New Democratic Party, which means he automatically takes over as premier of the province.

“I am Indian by heritage. I am proud of that”
Ujjal Dosanjh
In an interview with the BBC, Mr Dosanjah said that his mixed cultural and religious background would be no impediment to his handling of the job.He said: “I am Indian by heritage, I am proud of that. I am Punjabi by my mother tongue, I am proud of that.”He added: “If religion enters my life at all, it is only because I was born and raised in a Sikh family.”‘Never experienced racism’Mr Dosanjh says that he has never experienced racism in Canada, although he says he is aware that it exists.

His appointment has generated considerable interest amongst Canada’s Indian commmunity, and many have joined the ranks of his party.

But he is keen to play down the ethnic element to his success.

His appointment, he says, is a credit to all Canadians.

He says that he has been a politican in British Columbia for many years, and that people in the province now judge him by his politics rather than the colour of his skin.
