If the television pictures are to be believed Britain is burning.

A post 9/11 generation aware of the power of the media image have attacked their town’s iconic buildings setting them alight.

Trouble began in Tottenham’s Broadwater Farm Estate when a young Black man was shot dead by police.

When the dead man’s family approached their local police station to get some answers – amazingly the police had not spoken to them -a young girl was alleged to have pushed aside and then suddenly there was a night of looting.

The police did not overact – that was the one thing they have got right in this very sorry saga. Small scale rioting – awful for the people trapped in this – followed in some of the poorest boroughs of London, and has touched Liverpool and Birmingham also.

The police will get criticism for everything – but they should have…

Polarising figure no more?

An eighty-year-old man appeared before a parliamentary committee earlier today to answer questions about how the organistation that he ran had managed to hack into the phones of so many people, including that of the dead schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

No he was not to blame, he said, he had been let down by the people he had trusted.

And he was very, very sorry for the harm that had been caused.

This was, he said, the worst day of his life.

As you watched this giant of the media world being humbled by a parliamentary process of country that was not of his birth, somehow you were aware that you would never look Rupert Murdoch in the same way ever again. Great Power is only great when it is behind in the shadows, when it is exposed to the sunlight it can wilt, that was the…

Trapped in the UK in the year 2012 🇬🇧

China and India are said to be the rising stars of the economic world and if last night’s Piers Morgan’s programme on Shanghai is anything to go by, this will all mean some people are going to get incredibly rich.

Trouble is that in this arena of winners and losers, there are an even larger number who will not and who will suffer in this brave new world.

BBC News carried a report through out the day about illegal workers from India who had come to Britian to get work and perhaps a better life.

Well, the recession has paid put that idea and since those illegals burned their passports when they arrived here, they are trapped because the Indian government says that since they do not have the correct paperwork they can’t return home either.

The pictures of despair and sheer desperation that were broadcast were perhaps the most disturbing to be shown on terrestrial television yet.

One young man who said he was 21 had just been released from prison and was back on the streets – clearly for him the free world had nothing to offer. How did he get into trouble in the first place  – shop lifting to get him the drugs that get him through the day.

Then, the reporter took us to the place where many of these illegals, non existents, spend the night in the cold exposed to the weather, with little more than drugs and an appalling sound born of misery to get them by.

It just so happened that these poor people are from India, there are others also Russia Today broadcast report last December about Polish people getting by eating rats.

No doubt there are others from every corner of the Third World, including of course China.

Marie Colvin

24 Friday Feb 2012

Anna Politkovskaya, Marie Colvin, Terry Lloyd

ANALYSIS

Marie Colvin the American journalist who was killed after a rebel base in Homs was hit has been lauded for her fearless pursuit of the truth.  A veteran war reporter who had lost an eye in Sri Lanka she was undeniably brave, however was she in the same league as those other great names who lost their lives in the recent past, namely Anna Politkovskaya and Terry Lloyd who also lost their lives taking huge risks to seek the truth?

Well, Marie had already decided who was right and who was wrong in this conflict, by putting herself in the rebel camp, she was effectively an embed, still brave but to a large extent compromising her impartiality.

Journalists who did the same in Libya should make a return and honestly ask themselves whether what they said at the time has helped Libya.

Great journalists don’t bandwagon, they go out to find out for themselves what the reason for the conflict really is – and because of the huge risks this entails that does lead to their deaths, like Terry Lloyd in Iraq or the angel of Chechnya, Anna Politkovskaya who was gunned down on a Moscow Street for her reporting of perhaps the most savage conflict of the last decade of the twentieth century.

💸 Being Poor in the Richest Country on Earth 🇺🇸

14 Tuesday Feb 2012

ANALYSIS

Once upon a time, the BBC’s Panorama used to be the current affairs programme to watch. Since its revamp it has largely disappointed. Last night though was an exception – and what an exception.

America has suffered under the recession, which many commentators are comparing to the Great Depression of the 30s.

If what was shown last night was anything to go by, then those voices may not be wrong – with one million children homeless, coming from by and large from the kind of families the American dream is all about, and politicians largely unable and often unwilling to do anything concrete right now to prevent the communities of homeless people springing up literally down the road, the poor in the richest country on earth on are going to have a fight on their hands, especially since Republicans like Mitt Romney are open admirers of our own Margaret Thatcher and Newt Gringich are arguing for a return to child labour.

Strangely enough, not one of those condemning the poor for being a burden on the state are looking at the real reason for the astronomical budget deficit – quoted in the programme as one trillion dollars, but it is much, much larger than that – namely the cost of imperial overstretch.

Puppet Master (When Journalists get it Right!)

ANALYSIS – With the Leveson Inquiry currently revealing everything that is wrong at the heart of journalism, one case has just concluded that has just shown exactly the opposite, namely when a newspaper gets all the elements right, public interest and a cracking story which you can sell.

Banker Nathaniel Rothschild has just lost his libel action against the Daily Mail who reported that he had set up a meeting between  Lord Mandelson and Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

The newspaper portrayed him as a ‘puppet-master and  suggested that he had helped smooth a £500 million aluminium deal in 2005.

The article claimed that Mr Rothschild used Lord Mandelson – then European Commissioner for Trade – to impress Oleg Deripaska, the billionaire owner of Russia’s biggest aluminium plant, during a visit to Siberia.

The 40-year-old heir to the Rothschild banking dynasty had demanded ‘very substantial’ damages.

Anyone want to regulate the press now?

📺 Press TV is taken off the Airwaves 🇮🇷

23 Monday Jan 2012

Iran, Iran and Great Britain, PressTV, UK

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Everytime I flick on to the PressTV channel of my freeview box, I get a blank screen.

That’s because Of com has taken the Iranian-owned station off air, citing the failure to pay a six-figure sum for broadcasting an interview with someone who later said what he had said had come about under duress, and a number of breaches of editorial standards.

PressTV for its part says this is censorship, and that it has been penalised for the line it has taken on last year’s Royal wedding – remember this is a revolution that overthrew a monarch – and for its coverage of the riots that hit Britain.

Phil Rees, who has appeared on the station as a journalist and media analyst told RussiaToday that at the “end of the day” this decision had more to do with Iran’s relationship with the West, and with Britain – whose embassy in Tehran was recently stormed – in particular.

PressTV  suffered from weak journalism, and was seen by many within the industry as a propaganda channel, the ideas of fairness, balance and impartiality in its newscoverage were often not present, something that will no doubt be levelled at RussiaToday and the Chinese-owned CCTV.

That said PressTV did bother to cover the civilian toll of the Afghan and Iraq wars, and a viewer was given a fresh point of view, one seen through the eyes of someone regarded in this country as ‘other’.

George Galloway’s slot gave people who would not get the chance to be heard on television the opportunity to get their point across.

And occasionally their documentaries brought something new, like the truck drivers journey through Siberia.

And unlike many newsrooms, it was also a very woman friendly environment – you only have to look at the number of women presenters to appreciate that.

With tension mounting in the Strait of Hormuz, it would have been better to have allowed this channel to continue its broadcasts from its Hanger Lane office.

Instead, by closing it down it looks like someone has decided to silence a flawed, but still alternative voice.

Dehumanising the Enemy

Four young men laughing at each other’s jokes – could be a scene from any Saturday night, especially if they all had too much to drink.

Problem is this was no joke, the four marines were urinating on the bodies of three men, they called ‘Taliban’.

Predictably, yesterday’s video posting drew outrage with concerns about how the US could be seen in the Islamic World.

You can draw your own conclusions about that, however you may want to consider whether the actions of those four men is all that surprising.

The word ‘Taliban’ is used by soldiers in Afghanistan – and by many people over here – in the same way as you would talk of a pest that needs to be eradicated, in the same way also as the Lord’s name being taken in vain.

Hezbollah has also been used, as has Hamas, and as talk of war with Iran gets closer so will references to the stranglehold of that country’s clerical elite – the ‘mad mullahs’.

Go back further, and ‘Gaddafi’, ‘Saddam’ all received the same treatment – never mind the fact that many died fighting, if not for them, but for the nation that they led.

Both men were treated appalingly when they met their end.

And go back even further to the Vietnam and Korean Wars, and the carnage unleashed by aerial bombing was fine in the minds of the pilots because they were fighting the Vietcong, Communists, Gooks.

Go back further to Dresden, Hamburg, the wooden homes of Tokyo, the killing fields of the First World War.

Then, war was being waged against the Nazis, the Japs, and before them the German Guerilla.

As waging war becomes easier – modern drone strikes do not even need the conscience of a pilot – it is important to remember that the results are still as bloody and devastating to those we regard as the enemy.

John Terry

Chelsea, football, John Terry, racism

ANALYSIS

This country has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to dealing with racism, namely that it is never acceptable.

The case of John Terry who denies the allegations is the third incident to emerge recently.

Yesterday, Liverpool’s Luis Suarez was handed an eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra and of course that there is that trial of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, the young man whose vicious killing had started the whole process and the closing of arguments for which are currently being heard.

We are not there yet, however, people are disgusted by racism – and perhaps one day that will be this country’s greatest gift to the world.
