Could there be a war over Crimea?

ANALYSIS – With thousands of Russian troops now reported to be in the Crimea, armed gunmen thought to be Russian in control of Parliament and the governor of the province appealing to the Kremlin for assistance, could we be seeing  conflict unfolding in this vital region along the lines of Georgia?
Those who are quoting international law may find that Moscow is in no mood to be dictated to, given what has gone on in Ukraine and of course the Middle East and North Africa.
Crimea is in Russia’s sphere of influence and anyone who wants to argue with that like the former Georgian President did during that conflict will find themselves out in the cold when looking for allies and like that conflict will guarantee a sealed breakup of the country.

French Troops fighting Islamists in Mali

TEMPLATE REPORT

French troops are taking part in operations against Islamists in northern Mali, Francois Hollande has confirmed.

“Mali is facing an assault by terrorist elements coming from the north whose brutality and fanaticism is known across the world,” the French president said. He said Mali’s existence as a state was under threat, and referred to the need to protect its own population and 6,000 French citizens living there. France ruled Mali as a colony until 1960.

The French President said the intervention complied with international law, and had been agreed with Malian President Dioncounda Traore. A state of emergency has been declared across the country.

Mr Traore used a televised by Giant Savings” href=”#”>address on Friday to call on Malians to unite to “free every inch” of the country.

He said he was to by Giant Savings” href=”#”>launch a “powerful and massive riposte against our enemies” after he “called for and obtained France’s air support within the framework of the international legality”.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the aim of the operation was to stop Islamist militants advancing any further.

“We need to stop the terrorists’ breakthrough, otherwise the whole of Mali will fall into their hands threatening all of Africa, and even Europe,”

The UN had previously approved plans to send some 3,000 African troops to Mali to recapture the north if no political solution could be found, but that intervention was not expected to happen until September.

Late on Thursday, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called for the rapid deployment of an African-led force.

The EU also said it would support the rapid deployment of an African-led mission and speed up preparations for a military training mission

🪖 Bani Walid ‘under seige’ one year after the death of Colonel Gaddafi 🇱🇾

TEMPLATE REPORT

Bani Walid, a former Gaddafi stronghold, remains to be ‘liberated’, one year after the capture and murder of the Libyan dictator, the new regime has admitted.

Speaking on Libyan television late on Friday,  Libyan leader Mohammed Magarief said the new regime had struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons.

The national congress leader claimed the town of Bani Walid, some 160 kms (100 miles) south of Tripoli, had become a ‘safehaven’ for those who were ‘outside the law.’

He blamed“delays” in the formation of the army and police and the failure to disarm and integrate former rebels for the chaos in Libya.

“The campaign to liberate the country has not been fully completed.

“…the spread of chaos that has lured the old regime to infiltrate the country’s institutions inside and to conspire with the regime loyalists on the outside.

“And the chaos has lured others to kidnappings, stealing, and to create non-legitimate prisons. What has happened in Bani Walid in the last few days falls under this … it has become a safe haven for a large number of those who are outside of the law.”

Militias, aligned with the Defence Ministry, have shelled the hilltop town of 70,000 for several days. Many of those in the militias were from the rival town of Misrata, that are angry at the death of rebel fighter Omran Shaban (pictured above) after two months in detention in Bani Walid.

Shaban, from Misrata, was the man who found Colonel Muammar Gaddafi hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011.

Libya’s congress ordered the Defence and Interior Ministries to find those responsible for abducting Shaban and suspected of torturing him to death.

It gave Bani Walid a deadline to hand them over.

Euro 2012, Spain are through to Semi-Finals

BREAKING NEWS

Spain 2 France 0

A nineteen minute goal and a penalty in the closing stages, both from Xabi Alonso ensured that the right team will meet Portugal in the semi final.

To their credit, France were not outplayed by this Spanish side, however, they did not test their opponents either.

Instead, this France side simply allowed the game to drift in the hope of getting an equaliser and then forcing penalties.

It was a tactic that did not work and was not worthy of a team that had been tipped by many as pre-tournament favourites.

BREAKING NEWS

Donetsk, Group D: France v England

Roy Hodgson fielded an experimental team for their opening game against one of the teams who are tipped to win the tournament and the inclusion of Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain gave the side much-needed vitality at the front.

And for the first half hour England looked good, opening the French defence at least twice with James Milner hitting the side netting after 14th minutes. When Joleon Lescott put them in front after 30 minutes, England looked on their way. However the euphoria lasted for eight minutes as Samir Nasri creeped one past Joe Hart and the French began their comeback ending the first half looking the more assured side.

The second half was largely a messy affair. The game needed something special to bring it alive and there were moments when the French with their firepower at the front looked menacing.

However, the game was largely one of stalemate, a well organised English team with few surprises managing to deaden a French team that on paper looked like a skilful smooth team of operators.

England will take heart. As for France, well they’ll have to improve vastly if they’re going to challenge Germany, Russia, Spain or Italy in the closing stages.

Stand-off in Toulouse

21 Wednesday Mar 2012

Tags

france, Toulouse

Mohammed Merah, a Frenchman of Algerian origin, who is suspected of being behind  a recent spate of shootings around Toulouse, is currently inside a block of flats that is surrounded by police.
The 23-year-old is suspected of killing three soldiers and four Jewish people, all of which occurred in and around Toulouse in three separate incidents earlier this month.

On 11 March, a soldier was shot and killed after replying to an advertisement offering a motorcycle for sale.

Days later, two soldiers were shot and killed and a third was wounded while waiting for money from a cash machine.

And earlier this week, three children and an adult were shot and killed outside a Jewish school.

Earlier today, France’s interior minister, Claude Gueant, denied reports that security forces had arrested their suspect.

🪖 France plans to make denial of Armenian Genocide a crime 🇹🇷

Nicolas Sarkozy has sponsored a proposed bill to make the denial of the Armenian genocide a crime in France, which would be met with up to a year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

Predictably, the move has brought a fierce response from Turkey.

France has warned her against any reprisals that would damage Paris’s commercial interests, arguing that law was part of the French state’s commitment to the World Trade Organisation.

The Europeans have always taken the high ground when it comes to human rights, whilst being strangely myopic when it comes to admitting to their own crimes against humanity.

Here are a couple of episodes that I discovered during research for my novel, Pictures and Words.

Armenia was part of the Ottoman Empire which had allied itself with Germany and Austria in the First World War against the allies, Britain, France and Russia.

The decision to go to war was made by Ottoman War Minister, Enver Pasha, the head of  a movement that aimed unite the empire under the idea of a greater Turkey, in the same way as Germany and Italy had been forged from disparate states.

Europeans called this movement the ‘Young Turks.’

Chapter 4

The Treatment of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-16 was a publication of the British Propaganda Office. It was written by James Byrce and Arnold Toynbee, and presented, until now, unpublished news sources that showed how the Armenians suffered during the First World War. The only problem with the report, known as the ‘blue book’, was that it ignored the slaughter of Muslims by Armenian rebels whilst they were under Russian control and French tutelage. As the war began to turn on the Ottomans, Armenian nationalists pursued their dream of a Greater Armenia stretching all way to the Caucasus. Nothing would get in their way – they would commit horrendous acts while exaggerating the pain suffered by their ‘own’ people.

“I arrived at Bayburt on August 8 1917. What I saw was terrifying,” observed Tatiana Karamel, a nurse Russian Red Cross. “Armenians under the Russian administration were carrying out horrifying wild atrocities against the Turks in Bayburt and Ispir.

“The rebels named Arshak amd Antranik slaughtered the children in the orphanage, I worked at, with their daggers. They raped young girls and women.

“They took away 150 children with them, while they were withdrawing from Bayburt and killed most of them while they were still on the way.”

Old men and women, who had made it past a century of living, recounted some of the horrors they witnessed in their youth, when Armenian rebels committed atrocities in the eastern and southern Anatolia, all the way through to modern-day Azerbaijan.

Sirri Huseyinoglu, from Alacain, in Erzurum, remembered: “I was 19 during the period of Armenians atrocities. The Armenians had established an organisation.

“An Armenian general called Antwon-ich led them. They started atrocities in the villages

“At Erzurum they massacred 6 or 7000 people. They imprisoned them in huts

They tied a quilt on a water buffalo then they poured gasoline on the quilt and set it o on fire, They closed the buffalo in the hut. It went wild in the hut killing people.

“Makes a man go out of his mind to remember it.”

Mehmet Ackal , 106, Sambeyli, Adana : “Not one Muslim man was left they were imprisoned and killed. Children were boiled in water. They said ‘We are serving you lamb’ and made women eat their husbands.”

On Russian commander wrote on Jan 29, 1915 that the Armenian rebels were behaving in an “undisciplined and immoral” manner, “subjecting the civilians to violence” during the takeover of Van.

To this day, the stories of these people is ignored, written out of history as an irrelevance.

Europeans prefer the version offered by Jewish writer and poet Franz Werfel.

Fearing for the fate of Jews in Nazi Germany, he wrote an allegory called ‘The 40 Days of Musa Dagh,’.

In this work, Werfel substituted the Nazis with the Young Turks, and the Jews with the Armenians.

Chapter 10

Before the American defeat at Vietnam, it was the Algerian war of independence that had inspired the colonised peoples of the world.

When the French had forced their way into what they regarded as a rundown Ottoman province, it took them decades to ’pacify’ this land. During this time, her soldiers took a fancy to the silver ear rings, leg rings and arm rings worn by the local girls, which they took by cutting off entire limbs. Then, no one was too concerned for the French were bringing the benefits of civilisation to a backward people. France always felt bitter about the way the Arabs had repaid them, as the world horrified at the military crackdown forced the colonisers to leave a land they still regard as theirs.
