The Bodyguard?

Rebekah Brooks has had everything thrown at her since hacking scandal became a scandal, with the revelation that a private investigator had deleted answer phone messages on Milly Dowler’s phone so giving her distraught parents false hope that she was alive.

Yet through out this time, she walked tall by the man who made her his chief executive.

All manner of adjectives and probably abuse -you can hear something in that tape of her speaking to departing staff at the News of World though it is not clear what – has been thrown at her and still she seems unmoved, and her boss remains calm, even managing to smile.

Take your pick – Helen of Troy or medusa, perhaps a bit of both.

My guess is that a woman like Ms Brooks who has clearly made it on talent and hard work, whose backbone would put any man’s to shame, is seen by her boss as an ideal person to distract attention away from him as he plots his next move in his bid to realise his ambition of owning BSkyB.

At the moment, he seems toย have got itย right.

๐Ÿช– An Undeclared and Illegal War in Pakistan ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ

drone strikes in Pakistan, Pakistan

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Seventy people have been killed in seperate drone strikes launched by the CIA into Pakistan, it was reported over night

America has never admitted that these now ghastly familiar strikes happen, indeed it is unacknowledged by either side, to such an extent that people of Pakistan refer to this as the undecared war against their nation by the world’s remaining superpower. If you put this against the recent announcement that America would be withdrawing some of its military aid, in response to the explusion of a hundred military advisors, which was Islamabad’s response to the unauthorised raid into her territory to kill Osama Bin Laden, then you begin to come around to the way everyone else who living through this hell is currently thinking.

And another thing – the drone strikes, like the bin Laden raid are also technically a breach of Pakistan’s sovereignty and thus illegal.

Gordon Brown and The Sun Newspaper

Gordon Brown, Murdoch, The Sun

A Silent Assassin?

Gordon Brown appeared on BBC News today to talk about amongst other things how he was devastated to read a news report in The Sun newspaper about his son Fraser having cystic fibrosis. He had never wanted these details to be in the public arena, he said, and wondered how someone had got hold of the medical records of his entire family.

Watching him on TV brought back that Sun Front Page that depicted him as a squatter in Downing Street the day after last year’s inconclusive election result.

The Sun had of course devoted much of its front page and back page that summer to the cricket fixing scandal that was broke in her sister paper, The News of the World. The venom that was deployed against the Pakistani cricketers had clearly spread to its coverage of the general election with Brown now in her sights.

They did not hold back, and after Brown made his departure, some wondered who would next. So, it is indeed ironic that we are now into the second week of a scandal surrounding News Corporation. Already, we have seen the closure of the News of World, with an annoucements by Rupert Murdoch that he would be putting his bid for BSkyB on hold which was followed by the Culture Secretary telling the House of Commons that he would be referring the bid to the Competition Commission. The word ‘contagion’ which is still widely used when financial markets refer to Greece, has now become coinage when broadcasters refer to the Rupert Murdoch and his vast media empire.

And Brown, that figure from the not so distant past has just put another of his titles into the frame, namely that of The Sunday Times.

The News of the World

Rupert Murdoch should not be blinded by an emotional attachment to a small and declining part of his empire. Those were the last words to a Lex column in the Financial Times yesterday.ย  The piece was of course referring to the News of the World, which was part of a newspaper division โ€“ that included The Sun and other profitable tittles in the US and Australia โ€“ that contributed only 13 percent to News Corpโ€™s 2010 operating profits.

The piece began with the claim that News Corp was in a BP-style mess and accompanied a frontpage that carried the headline โ€˜Murdoch investors take frightโ€™ โ€“ Brooks (Rebekah) backed over NoW, Fears for BSkyB bid, News Corp shares fall.

As the phone hacking scandal escalated yesterday, following the revelation that voice messages that had been hacked into included those of murdered British school girl Milly Dowler, were the closing words to that Lex column still ringing in Rupert Murdochโ€™ s ears when he decided to close down a title he had bought in 1969?

Novak Djokovic steamrollered his way to victory in yesterdayโ€™s Wimbledon menโ€™s final.

His opponent, the much fancied Rafael Nadal, did not have a response to the relentless barrage that he endured from the young Serb, who we  are told had at the age of twelve been sent away from home to realise his potential as a tennis player.

His performance was applauded by no less a person than the president of Serbia, which gives you an idea of how important winning Wimbledon was to this tiny Balkan state, which has been craving for acceptance amongst its fellow Christian European nations.

As pictures of Djokovic clasping the much prized trophy were appearing all over national newspapers in this country, and no doubt abroad, another man from Serbia was making his presence felt at the war crimes tribunal at the Hague.

Ratko Mladic was being thrown out of court for his behaviour.

He is accused of the massacre at Srebrenica, the worst atrocity in Europe since the Second World War.

Some 8, 000 men and boys are said to have been killed by forces commanded by the Serb warlord.

If Serbia is indeed to join Europe, and just as importantly gain the acceptance she so craves, then she needs to own up what was going on at that time, why her people had turned so violently on her neighbours, with whom the only difference was  religion and what she is doing to ensure that it never happens again.

Balls, Blair, Brown, The Labour Party

ย Spin doctorย or historian?

ย Alistair Campbell has revealed in his diary that MI6 had warned Tony Blair that France and Gernany were looking to exploit differences between him and Gordon Brown.

The diary also reveals that Ed Balls, the current shadow Chancellor, and Brown had stopped Britainโ€™s direct involvement in the Greek Euro crisis.

Blair, it is claimed, had wanted to take this country into euro.

All this is lovelly, but last week this country had a distinct echo from the past, a one-day strike over pensions by the public sector, it was the type of gathering that we have not seen since, well Thatcher, the last Conservative Prime Minister to experiment with this nationโ€™s ecomomy. Then, as large parts of the country were calling for a lead from the oppostion, no less a man than Tony Benn โ€“ yes, Tony Benn โ€“ found himself embroiled in the internal ranglings and goings-on of the troubledย Labour Party.

Arguably, this country has never been the same since.

Perhaps, ย Alistair Campbell and that other prince of the dark arts, Peter Mandelson, should stop putting forward their version of recent history, and look to the future in formulating a strategy to tackle this countryโ€™s ย trillion pound deficit with out creating,ย ย armageddon.

David Cameron had an unsual visitor over the weekend.

I say unusual because he says that he is the democratically elected President of Pakistan, and yet I have still to find a single Pakistani who says that he ever voted for Asif Ali Zardari.

When Pakistan is mentioned in the press, and that is by no means just in the western press, the words โ€˜troubledโ€™, โ€˜on the brinkโ€™ and ย โ€˜descentโ€™ are often accompanied as usual descriptions. Pakistani national identity is not very strong, it is claimed, by no less a person than the former Balouchistani rebel, Ahmed Rashid, who has really come of his own since the events of that dark Tuesday in the year 2001.

Yet, a casual conversation with any Pakistani wil tell you other wise.

It is widely believed that the root cause of terrorism in Pakistan is America and India. Ameticaโ€™s standing as a friend is belied by the CIA-sponsored drone attacks that continue to this day and by the fact they appear to have carte blanche when it comes to their dealings with Islamabad. Go further, to the north west โ€“ to the so called tribal areas, a name that was out of date when it was first used by the colonial power of Great Britain โ€“ and those people, aย  thousand of whom were killed by drone strikes last year, will tell you that the Great Power that says that it is their countryโ€™s friend is aiming break up their nation, so that they can seize the atom bomb with the long term aim of a war with first Iran and then finally with that emerging Great Power that is China.

Listening to this, reminds me of the time when The Ottoman Empire โ€“ which Pakistan does bear some resemblance to โ€“ wasย making its mind up with regards to which was its real friend, the emerging power of Germany or that ofย Great Britain. Then, there were many warnings from their former allies of the dangers of allying itself with the dreaded Kaiser.

Pakistanโ€™s relationship with China is solid, however America believes that there is always a ย price to be paid for such closeness to the much feared Peopleโ€™s Republic.

That may be the case, but for the moment, the people of Pakistan โ€“ a large proportion of whom are below the age of 25 – ย have to live through the everyday cycle of violence, bombings, whilst having watch to politicians of the calibre of President Asif Ali Zardari jet around the world to meet democratically-elected politicians like David Cameron.
