Bangladesh, where Democracy fails the People

ANALYSIS

A democracy where the heads of the two main opposition parties are women, should be an excellent springboard for any modern state and an excellent showcase for the world. Trouble is, this is Bangladesh one of the poorest countries on earth, whose 170m people are going have to endure another round of political infighting between the daughter of a former president and the widow of another.

Even by South Asian standards – remember Bangladesh is neighbours with India and was once east Pakistan – the power games between Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami party and the current prime minister, and Khaleda Zia, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have been stupid and dangerous. Here is a country where democracy has not been able to deliver anything concrete to the man on the street, whilst the elected leaders of the two main parties have spent most of their time in office trying to score points off each other.

Perhaps the best example of this, is the war crimes tribunal which was set up to investigate atrocities in the 1971 civil war and which is looking like an attempt to discredit the BNP and her Islamist allies.

Awful things were committed during that conflict and after in revenge, trouble is no one seems to be interested in what happened after when Indian trained militias savagely punished anyone that had supported Pakistan.

On top of this, the Awami League has targetted a Nobel laureate who pioneered Microfinance and created the Grameen Bank, Mohammad Yunus. His crime appears to be that he dared to set up a “third force” in Bangladesh politics.

Today, Bangladesh which fought to be free of one master is the only country on the subcontinent to accept India as the region’s superpower, something that the smaller – in terms of population – war ravaged Sri Lanka has not done to this day.

And domestically, the country which was once the breadbasket of Pakistan, sees street protests, disappearances and murders of opposition leaders.

All the while,  ordinary Bengalis who struggle with food and fuel price rises, chronic power cuts and still no new roads  are contributing through the textile industry to an economy with 6 per cent growth with the promise of a healthy middle class in the near future.

So, with a general election eighteen months away, one has to wonder what exactly would be gained from such an enterprise at this moment, when the country’s politicians seem so distracted from the real issues.

After Mubarak, Egyptians now vote for a new President

23 Wednesday May 2012

Tags

Democracy, Egypt, Egypt and Mubarak, Mubarak, Muslim Brotherhood

Fifteen months after ousting Hosni Mubarak, Egypt is holding its first ever free presidential election.

Some fifty million people are eligible to vote.

The military council which assumed presidential power in February 2011 has promised a fair vote and civilian rule.

The name to watch are:

  • Ahmed Shafiq, a former commander of the air force and briefly prime minister during February 2011 protests
  • Amr Moussa, who has served as foreign minister and head of the Arab League
  • Mohammed Mursi, who heads Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party
  • Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh, an independent Islamist candidate

As a new constitution has yet to be approved, it is unclear what powers the president will have.

How to Repair Pakistan – US Relations (Change the President) 🇵🇰 – 🇺🇸

ANALYSIS

If, as appears likely, Mitt Romney will defeat the current incumbent at the White House in November’s Presidential election, one country will look forward to the eviction of Barack Obama – namely that of Pakistan.

From the outset, even before he was elected, Obama spoke of bombing PAKIStan and true to his word, drone strikes, which will surely be remembered in the same way as GITMO was for George Bush, have marked this Presidency – the last one on Wednesday in the so-called tribal belt killing three people.

And then there was the Nato strike which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, for which Isaf has still not apologised, and which even to the most impartial of observers looked like an act of war, a pre-emptive strike.

At Chicago, the President of Pakistan, who is hated within his own country for being an American ‘puppet’ demanded that the US pay £3, 200 for every Nato lorry that will pass through Pakistan, if she was to reopen a border crossing closed after that fatal incident involving 24 Pakistani soldiers.

And today comes the first confirmation – if not official – that the Americans got their man with the jailing of the doctor who helped the CIA find Osama bin Laden.

Shakil Afridi who had charged with treason and for running a fake vaccination programme was jailed for 30 years in Khyber district.

The raid which was celebrated in the US angered the Pakistanis, who claimed that it was a further violation of their nation’s sovereignty.

So if indeed, a Republican is heading for the CEO’s job at Washington, then the people of Pakistan will be the first to be out on the streets to celebrate.

Gr-exit (or what to do with Greece)

ANALYSIS

You know that there’s a problem when reporters are asking any Greek citizen that appears on television how the next generation intends to behave, will they have learned that you can’t get something for nothing.

You know that there’s a problem when reporters point out that Greek doctors who are known to earn in excess of a million euros, file tax returns claiming that they earn just 14, 000 a year.

Here is a corrupt country blocking the arteries of Europe.

And you know that there’s a problem when another nation’s PM, namely our own David Cameron, frustrated at how Greek politicians have failed to form a government or to indicate whether they intend to implement the next round of austerity cuts to this already austerity battered country, warns Athens  that there are plans for a Greek exit out of the Eurozone.

But how realistic is such a prospect, how would any one have confidence in the Euro again, especially with Italy, Spain and Portugal all  suffering under the weight of debt – and lets not forget Ireland either.

To remove Greece would be a spectacular own goal, that would make the fall of Lehman Brothers look inspired.

For to remove Greece would be hari-kari – Europe may never recover its position in the world, a world where Asia is still potentially the future economic powerhouse.

If the fall of Lehman’s signalled the beginning end of New York as the economic capital of the world, then the exit of Greece will only serve to confirm the end of Europe with its capitals of Paris, Berlin and London.

No one will be able escape the consequences, no one that is who is from the West.

So what to do with Greece – it will have to remain, as a second tier Balkan state which is what was when it was admitted into the Euro on the advice of Goldman Sachs.

And what will that mean- that that nation’s sovereignty will suffer in the same way that the Ottomans had when they were declared bankrupt and were then forced to accept British and French bankers who monitored every aspect of their economy, granting loans on conditions.

In this case, of course those bankers will be German and will hopefully do a better job of curbing corruption and tax avoidance than their Anglo-Saxon cousins who were at the time meant to be helping the Sultan and his office of the Sublime Porte, but who were in reality further undermining the economic foundations of a genuinely multi-ethnic, multi-religious state.

BREAKING NEWS – Chelsea are European Champions

Penalties –  3 – 4

FT Bayern Munich 1 – 1 Chelsea

       Muller 83                    Drogba 88

Bayern dominated the first half, but did not make it count squandering a hatful of chances, with Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller missing the mark far too often.

The pattern continued in the second.

When Thomas Muller finally made it count eight minutes before time, it looked like it was all over for Roberto di Matteo’s men. However, Drogba appeared out of nowhere two minutes before time to head in an equaliser and it was game on.

Chelsea got back in for the next five mnutes, which included three minutes of extra time, and when Drogba sent a free kick into the crowd the game finished 1-1 after normal time.

Three minutes into extra time though, a Drogba foul on Franck Ribery opened the way for a Arjen Robben penalty which was sensationally saved by Petr Cech.

From now onwards, it appeared that the omens were good for Chelsea and that Bayern would rue all those squandered chances, which included that miss by Robben, as well a great one early in the second half of extra time.

Bayern continued to attack, but they just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net as the game went into a penalty shoot out with that man Drogba sealing the deal.

This is Chelsea’s Moment

TEMPLATE COMMENTARY

Nothing about Roberto Di Matteo’s side and how it has managed to get into the Champions League final to meet Bayern Munich has been convincing.

Not the performances, which include a very fortunate defeat of a Barcelona side whose manager was clearly tired of looking at the endless stream of silverware coming his way.

Nor the appearance of his players whose best days are clearly behind them –  that includes the once great Drogba as well those players that have for some reason made it into the England squad for the summer’s European Championships.

So, it would take a brave man to bet against a German side that boasts  amongst others, the latest Dutch superstar, one Arjen Robben in its ranks.

But Chelsea, have got a momentum, similar to the way Liverpool and Manchester United before them had going for them.

Call it the ‘It’ factor, call it what you like – they have team spirit that will mean they will overcome this Bayern Munich side in Munich to become European Club Champions.

The performance will not please their billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, however that will be an argument for another day – for this is Chelsea’s moment.

ANALYSIS

What a difference a day makes, or in this case a month or so.

As David Cameron and some one called Nick Clegg – where are you my friend? – celebrate two years since they appeared under the sun in the Downing St garden all smiles before the press,  the Conservatives are lurching from crisis to crisis.

Admitting that they got wrong when they scrapped the jets ordered by the last government for this country’s two aircraft carriers.

They did of course make a big issue of this at the time.

Gordon Brown’s government had mismanaged the economy and wasted public money and the spending £5bn on jets that this nation did not need proved their point.

Well, Britain hit double-dip recession territory within the time frame predicted by Brown  – that despite the radical cuts to the public sector announced by Chancellor George Osborne. This news opened the whole country’s eyes to the coalition’s claims to having a credible economic plan and they still want to have a go at welfare, education and health.

Don’t underestimate the magnitude of the defeat at the local elections – David Cameron did not win the general election outright and has just seen his party wiped out everywhere except in London, where the Mayor bucked the trend though he lost heavily in the London assembly.

So, as Jeremy Hunt faces calls to stand down against a backdrop of a Leveson inquiry that is appearing to be more damaging to Cameron and those former Murdoch employees around him, who include his Education Secretary Michael Gove, the question is what next on the rocky road to May 2015?

☪️ The Greek Question

12 Saturday May 2012

Tags

Euro, Europe 🇪🇺, Greece, Ottoman Empire

ANALYSIS

During the Greek War of Independence, the Sultan who was blamed for many massacres was famously slow to accept defeat and thus allow the rebels their freedom.

Some seventy years later, when Greece was routed by an Ottoman army, the way was open for the reconquest of those lands.

The Sultan though showed no interest in doing so.

For by then, Greece like the other newly created Balkan states were a problem for everyone, including the very European states that had championed their cause.

Today, European Central Bankers are debating the merits of taking Greece out of the Euro, as politicians in Athens are trying to form a government.

Should they stay or should they go – there will be huge implications whatever route is taken, which is why those who make make decisions should like the Sultan also consider their long term implications.

🚨’I was Brainwashed’, says Rochdale grooming victim who was 15 at the time of her ordeal 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇬🇧

09 Wednesday May 2012

“We would get free alcohol and cigarettes, food, free taxis.

“At first I thought it was great because nothing sexual had happened, I thought I could just get all of this stuff for free.”

The men, she said, were friendly, simply chatting with the girls now and again in a takeaway shop.

“It made me feel like I was pretty. I never thought that they would do what they did to me, because you don’t think that would happen.”

Then, things changed.

“He asked me to come upstairs and I didn’t really think anything of it.

“He then was saying all the things he had bought for me, and he wanted something back for it.

“I tried to say no in a nice way, but he wasn’t having it.”

After a while, she was being driven to different houses or flats where there would be other men waiting.
“At first I felt really bad, dirty and ashamed. But after a while it had been going on for so long and with so many different men, I didn’t feel anything towards it anymore.

“What they did to me was evil, they ripped away my dignity, my self-esteem.”

This continued for months.

Then one evening, she was arrested by police for smashing the counter at a takeaway where some of the men met the girls. Then, she told the police.

“I was scared telling them, because I didn’t know what the consequences would be from the men.

“They threaten you, and you’re scared of them, and that’s how they make you do it.”

The men led the girls to believe they were in relationships with some of them, and it was normal to have sex.

“They’re just brainwashing you so you think you love them so you do what they say.

“It’s not a normal relationship when your boyfriend is getting you to sleep with all his friends for money.”

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) investigated Kabeer Hassan and another man, aged 59.

But when the Crown Prosecution Service reviewed the case in summer 2009, it was decided that the girl “would not be viewed as a credible witness” – a decision not appealed against by GMP – and no prosecution was brought.

“I felt let down. I know they believed me, they said to me at the end that something should have been done.”

The abuse then continued, with a number of men who she had not seen before joining in.

Social services became involved when she started to arrive at school dirty and sometimes smelling of alcohol.

At the time, she was living with an older victim but when she became pregnant by one of the men, she moved back in with her parents. She continued to receive phone calls from her abusers, and cars with drivers she recognised were parking outside.

“I wouldn’t go out of the house for nine months on my own without my mum or dad, because I was frightened,” she said.

“Eventually I moved out of the area as I couldn’t stay there anymore.”

It was not until summer 2011 that Nazir Afzal, the new regional head of the CPS, reversed the decision not to prosecute.

By then police were investigating allegations from another girl about on-street grooming in Heywood.

This eventually led to the successful prosecution of nine men for offences included rape, trafficking girls for sex and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child.

The woman now wants her story to be told to help people spot the signs of grooming, which she describes as “a common thing that not enough people know about”.

She plans to become a social worker, partly due to the ordeal she suffered while still a vulnerable young girl.

“It will always be there, but I know how to deal with it,” she said.

“I’ve had a lot of problems in the past, suicide attempts and drinking, but now I know something is being done to prevent it happening again.”
