Rupert Murdoch at the Leveson Inquiry

ANALYSIS

Yesterday, he described Gordon Brown as ‘unbalanced’, someone who had declared war on News Corporation in reponse to The Sun switching its support from Labour to David Cameron’s Conservatives.

Today, Rupert Murdoch admitted that he had missed the ‘cover-up’ at the News of the World, a newspaper he also said should have been closed down long ago.

When asked who the buck stopped with at all his newspapers, he replied the Editor, he, Rupert Murdoch, had of course overall responsibility, however he had delegated.

If the 81-year-old the standing of the media mogul had suffered from the phone hacking scandal, then his appearance today and yesterday at the Royal Courts of Justice may have gone someway to recovering any lost ground.

Great power is best exercised when it is understated, especially when it is exposed before the glare of the media spotlight.

And that is exactly what the world saw, as arguably one of the most powerful men in the world explained how he did not intefere in the running of his newspapers, content or welfare of staff and how he closed the NoW after revelations that the phone of tragic schoolgirl Milly Dowler had been hacked. He said he “could feel the blast coming in the window, almost”, as soon as the story broke.

All this will of course make the headlines, however what was perhaps more telling was how he viewed the future of the newspaper industry in the midst of the current electronic revolution.

He gave newspapers another ten years, this from a man for whom running a newspaper is clearly a passion.

How would the new media make money, well the Huffington Post was getting millions of hits but was struggling to make anything.

There are bloggers out there whose work can reach any where.

Work can be pilfered and then put out there with little or no respect for intellectual property rights.

If this was some else talking, then it could be dismissed as yet another world view, however here is the owner of The Sun (as well as Sunday), The Times and The Sunday Times admitting that he could not see a long term future for the newspaper industry.

Labour Peer denies ‘Obama bounty’ claims

Suspended Labour Peer Lord Nazir Ahmed has told The Template that he did not call for a £10m bounty for the capture of US Presidents Barack Obama and George Bush.

He was reported to have made the remark by a Pakistani newspaper.

But Lord Ahmed said the story was “lies” and that he had never mentioned a bounty for President Obama or Bush.

The Express Tribune said the comments were a response to a US reward being offered for the capture of a Pakistani radical, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed who founded Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group which is blamed by India for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which 166 people were killed.

Lord Ahmed is said to have made the remarks at a reception in Haripur on Friday.

Labour has suspend the peer, pending an investigation.

To Understand China look to the Past 🇨🇳

07 Saturday Apr 2012

ANALYSIS – If there was any nation for whom the word ‘history’ means anything, that nation is China.

For this rising superpower has had a long life, stretching back some two thousand years.

So, perhaps the best way to read how China will develop in the world will come through looking back to the past.

Two incidents stand out in relation to recent moves by the US into Australia.

The first involved the rising power of Japan, who found itself under an embargo targeting the raw materials which it needed to continue its move into the industrialised age.

The established wisdom is that the Second World War in the Pacific started with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, however didn’t that war really begin with those US sanctions that struck at the heart of nation?

So how do you think China, could interpret America’s recent move into Australia, allied to her talk of supporting South Korea, Japan, and Australia, all of whom are said to be concerned about the rise of this future superpower?

Could the move into Australia, be seen as the opening of hostilities by a status-quo power?

Today, China is a huge nation, a continent of some two billion or more people.  It was a huge nation also when Great Britain forced it through gun-boat diplomacy to allow the selling of opium on its mainland before eventually ceding control of Hong Kong.

Could there be a repeat result over trade in the South China Sea, which the US and her allies claim is an  international trade route?

All this of course, negates one stark fact, any future conflict with China will mean any potential foe would have to deal with her arsenal of nuclear weapons.

So, it appears that a number of nations will have to get around the negotiating table to iron out their differences with China.

🪖 China and its military power 🇨🇳

05 Thursday Apr 2012

 It’s all there for show…

Any conflict between America and China would of course be over Taiwan, but how realistic is such a confrontation.

If the Economist is to be believed America’s actions by moving troops into Australia, is an admission that Washington had been distracted by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to such an extent that it had forgotten the rise of China.

If that is indeed the case, what hostile actions has China taken to alarm the world’s last superpower?

China is the second biggest military spender in the world today, which currently stands at 89.8 billion dollars, a fraction of what America spends – 739.3bn dollars.

Further, the combined budgets of Britain, France and Germany, who are all contributors to Nato, almost double China’s.

In addition to all this, the US and Nato have at least a decade of combat experience through wars in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and of course Libya.

The People’s Liberation army of China is indeed the largest army in the world, however, the last time it was involved in a theatre of war was in 1979 against Vietnam, where it was crushed.

And the Korean War was a complete disaster.

So, if anyone is going to be provoking a war, it certainly won’t be China.

The Slow Massacre of British Troops

26 Monday Mar 2012

Afghanistan, Afghanistan and Britain, Distant Echoes, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Philip Hammond, Politics 💼 🗳 🪖, Slow massacre of British troops in Afghanistan, Template News, Terrorism, UK, US and Afghanistan

The word ‘massacre’ is so often used in today’s world of never-ceasing war, that you can forget what it means. That what that American soldier committed in Kandahar was a massacre is without a shadow of doubt – the figure is now 17 civilians, mostly children and women.

Even the American PR spin about him being mentally ill could not hide that reality. However, what isn’t mentioned perhaps because those deaths have come at a slower – drip –  speed, is the massacre of British troops in Afghanistan.

The latest incident which was confirmed by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has taken the number to 407.

When British troops were first moved into Helmand Province, it was then claimed that there would be no need to fire any guns in anger.

What a difference a few years a make.

This campaign which is still not understood over here, is regarded by the enemy which many over here call the Taliban, as America’s war.

Everyone else is just there to make up the numbers – nothing more.

JOURNALIST NAYAB CHOHAN INTERVIEWS STEWART PURVIS in TEMPLATE EXCLUSIVE – Why OFCOM took Press TV off the Airwaves

LONDON – Press TV could be back on the UK airwaves, Professor Stewart Purvis who was on the OFCOM board that made the decision to take the Iranian-owned broadcaster off air said today in an exclusive Template interview.

Prof Purvis said Press TV had not been able to meet European standards and regulations, highlighting the interview broadcast with a man who later said he had been under duress from the Iranian authorities as an example of this.

He did not however rule out a time when OFCOM and Press TV could meet and iron out the problems, that mean that viewers can only see the channel on the deregulated web.
