Dehumanising the Enemy

Four young men laughing at each other’s jokes – could be a scene from any Saturday night, especially if they all had too much to drink.

Problem is this was no joke, the four marines were urinating on the bodies of three men, they called ‘Taliban’.

Predictably, yesterday’s video posting drew outrage with concerns about how the US could be seen in the Islamic World.

You can draw your own conclusions about that, however you may want to consider whether the actions of those four men is all that surprising.

The word ‘Taliban’ is used by soldiers in Afghanistan – and by many people over here – in the same way as you would talk of a pest that needs to be eradicated, in the same way also as the Lord’s name being taken in vain.

Hezbollah has also been used, as has Hamas, and as talk of war with Iran gets closer so will references to the stranglehold of that country’s clerical elite – the ‘mad mullahs’.

Go back further, and ‘Gaddafi’, ‘Saddam’ all received the same treatment – never mind the fact that many died fighting, if not for them, but for the nation that they led.

Both men were treated appalingly when they met their end.

And go back even further to the Vietnam and Korean Wars, and the carnage unleashed by aerial bombing was fine in the minds of the pilots because they were fighting the Vietcong, Communists, Gooks.

Go back further to Dresden, Hamburg, the wooden homes of Tokyo, the killing fields of the First World War.

Then, war was being waged against the Nazis, the Japs, and before them the German Guerilla.

As waging war becomes easier – modern drone strikes do not even need the conscience of a pilot – it is important to remember that the results are still as bloody and devastating to those we regard as the enemy.

ANALYSIS – The Metropolitan Police Service did not do their job properly –    they failed to act because they did NOT take the murder of a black teenager seriously. In short, they were racist.
One only has to listen to the pain in Doreen Lawrence’s words to understand that.
She also made the point that racist attacks are still occuring today and that police should not use her son’s case as an excuse to move on.
One of the killers had actually attacked a white teenager with a knife before going on to murder Stephen.
That does not mean that this case was not racially motivated.
We all know that this case would never have not got so far, had the middle market Daily Mail not taken its dramatic stand.
Question is – how many more ‘Stephen Lawrences’ are still out there?

🪖 France plans to make denial of Armenian Genocide a crime 🇹🇷

Nicolas Sarkozy has sponsored a proposed bill to make the denial of the Armenian genocide a crime in France, which would be met with up to a year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

Predictably, the move has brought a fierce response from Turkey.

France has warned her against any reprisals that would damage Paris’s commercial interests, arguing that law was part of the French state’s commitment to the World Trade Organisation.

The Europeans have always taken the high ground when it comes to human rights, whilst being strangely myopic when it comes to admitting to their own crimes against humanity.

Here are a couple of episodes that I discovered during research for my novel, Pictures and Words.

Armenia was part of the Ottoman Empire which had allied itself with Germany and Austria in the First World War against the allies, Britain, France and Russia.

The decision to go to war was made by Ottoman War Minister, Enver Pasha, the head of  a movement that aimed unite the empire under the idea of a greater Turkey, in the same way as Germany and Italy had been forged from disparate states.

Europeans called this movement the ‘Young Turks.’

Chapter 4

The Treatment of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-16 was a publication of the British Propaganda Office. It was written by James Byrce and Arnold Toynbee, and presented, until now, unpublished news sources that showed how the Armenians suffered during the First World War. The only problem with the report, known as the ‘blue book’, was that it ignored the slaughter of Muslims by Armenian rebels whilst they were under Russian control and French tutelage. As the war began to turn on the Ottomans, Armenian nationalists pursued their dream of a Greater Armenia stretching all way to the Caucasus. Nothing would get in their way – they would commit horrendous acts while exaggerating the pain suffered by their ‘own’ people.

“I arrived at Bayburt on August 8 1917. What I saw was terrifying,” observed Tatiana Karamel, a nurse Russian Red Cross. “Armenians under the Russian administration were carrying out horrifying wild atrocities against the Turks in Bayburt and Ispir.

“The rebels named Arshak amd Antranik slaughtered the children in the orphanage, I worked at, with their daggers. They raped young girls and women.

“They took away 150 children with them, while they were withdrawing from Bayburt and killed most of them while they were still on the way.”

Old men and women, who had made it past a century of living, recounted some of the horrors they witnessed in their youth, when Armenian rebels committed atrocities in the eastern and southern Anatolia, all the way through to modern-day Azerbaijan.

Sirri Huseyinoglu, from Alacain, in Erzurum, remembered: “I was 19 during the period of Armenians atrocities. The Armenians had established an organisation.

“An Armenian general called Antwon-ich led them. They started atrocities in the villages

“At Erzurum they massacred 6 or 7000 people. They imprisoned them in huts

They tied a quilt on a water buffalo then they poured gasoline on the quilt and set it o on fire, They closed the buffalo in the hut. It went wild in the hut killing people.

“Makes a man go out of his mind to remember it.”

Mehmet Ackal , 106, Sambeyli, Adana : “Not one Muslim man was left they were imprisoned and killed. Children were boiled in water. They said ‘We are serving you lamb’ and made women eat their husbands.”

On Russian commander wrote on Jan 29, 1915 that the Armenian rebels were behaving in an “undisciplined and immoral” manner, “subjecting the civilians to violence” during the takeover of Van.

To this day, the stories of these people is ignored, written out of history as an irrelevance.

Europeans prefer the version offered by Jewish writer and poet Franz Werfel.

Fearing for the fate of Jews in Nazi Germany, he wrote an allegory called ‘The 40 Days of Musa Dagh,’.

In this work, Werfel substituted the Nazis with the Young Turks, and the Jews with the Armenians.

Chapter 10

Before the American defeat at Vietnam, it was the Algerian war of independence that had inspired the colonised peoples of the world.

When the French had forced their way into what they regarded as a rundown Ottoman province, it took them decades to ’pacify’ this land. During this time, her soldiers took a fancy to the silver ear rings, leg rings and arm rings worn by the local girls, which they took by cutting off entire limbs. Then, no one was too concerned for the French were bringing the benefits of civilisation to a backward people. France always felt bitter about the way the Arabs had repaid them, as the world horrified at the military crackdown forced the colonisers to leave a land they still regard as theirs.

The Autumn Audit, 2011

Staring into the abyss..

This country will face five more years of cut backs – otherwise known as austerity. It will mean that when the coalition government runs for re-election in 2015, they will do so with the promise that there will two more years of “tough choices” before the deficit will be eliminated.

During this time, the axe will fall on 700, 000 public sector jobs, so taking the number of jobless past the three million mark – already over one million of our young people have little prospect of finding a job in the current challenging climate.

Last night, Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the Treasury, informed Newsnight that the Lib Dems were right behind the plan for more cuts.

The opposition says the cuts are too fast.

They are right – the social consequences of the planned austerity measures are horrendous, which is something that the young, well heeled George Osbourne does not seemed to factored into his equations.

However, the two Eds need to come up with ideas as to how propel the economy foward – now is not the time for political point scoring or in fighting, hopefully Labour has learned its lesson from the last time there was a prolonged period of Conservative government, then first Tony Benn and then an overconfident Neil Kinnock ensured three terms of Thatcher, which was followed by John Major.

Arguably the cost to our children will be much worse if David Cameron and George Osbourne are allowed to continue.

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, opportunities for those born into modest incomes have been on the slide since 1970.

One can imagine what they will like on May 7, 2015.

The Euro

Elder statesmen in a barren landscape..

With Italy the latest nation to suffer under the burden of being linked to a single currency, very real questions are being asked about the future of the Euro.

TheEconomist says that Europe has not addressed the fundamental changes around her – namely the rise of a younger slimmer  Asia at the cost of this grand once great old man.

Today’s Financial Times outlines a three-trierEurope with France-Germany as the engine, the driver of a system that relegates eastern Europe to the periphery.

Of course, Gordon Brown did warn everyone that France – like Germany – was exposed because of her banks.

So what will become a unit that once touted as a serious economic challenger to the United States of America?

And will things ever be the same again?

The international system created by Europe was never perfect, and frankly the world outside this club of nations was roped into joining it.

Some powers suffered like China, some simply vanished – like the Ottoman Empire, whose loss the Islamic World has been suffering the consequences of to this day, especially in a world order based on power.

The history of the end of the ‘Sick Man of Europe’ can be traced back to the creation of the tiny kingdom of Greece, a cause championed by Shelley and Byron.

The behaviour of the main players at that time towards this once great and now grand old man was racist.

(Ever wonder where Adolf Hitler some of his ideas from?)

Now a century or so on, with the Eurozone crisis sparked by a bankrupt Greece, how will the main players on the international scene deal with their once great and now grand friend.

With America already signalling that she will be looking East, how will China view this potentially barren economic wasteland, which still fights wars against weaker nations, whilst lecturing others about human rights?

Oligarch’s Playground

You watch my back..

Those who are wondering how our country could one day pan out, may want to take a look at a £6.5 billion court case currently being played out in a London court between two extremely wealthy Russian businessmen, both of whom profitted from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The men at the centre of this saga are living comfortably here in London, though one has his clean-cut football owner image tarnised somewhat by revelations in court that he paid protection money during the aluminium wars, when it is reported someone was killed every three days. The other is wanted by questioning by Russia – in particular by one Vladimir Putin – for being one of a number of businessmen responsible for walking out of Moscow with a huge portion of the nation’s wealth.

Things may not have been that grand under Communism, but after the fall of the evil empire,  it was literally each man for himself in the ‘Wild West’ – those were the words used in court – that followed.

The ‘new’ money that men such as Roman Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky have brought with them may yet come at a price.

So finally the Chancellor of the Excequer is going to admit what we all have known from the moment he announced his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this parliament, namely that his ill thought out scheme is unrealistic and could yet cause long term damage to the economic health of this country.

If as the Business Secretary claims we are in the midst of an economic equivalent of a war, then perhaps David Cameron and the rest of his well -heeled Notting Hill Set should take a close look at the health of the troops that are the citizens of the country.

Throwing large numbers of people onthe scrapheep will not achieve a recovery – I know economists will not tell you that, they are too busy with the figures to look at the social cost of their theories, however any recovery must be based on a workforce being given a chance to be productive.

There’s no other way – money printing is a short term solution, which only result in a rise in the price of Gold, as savers scramble to protect themselves.

Infrastructure projects will create work, there are again so did public sector jobs in the north of England.
