Manchester United are top of the Premier League

TEMPLATE REPORT

With ten games gone, the Premier League looks very much like it did last year, with the two Manchester clubs battling it out for the top position .

And if City beat West Ham by four goals then it will be a replay of the thrilling season that made Roberto Mancini’s men champions.

After breaking Chelsea’s run last week, Manchester United completely outclassed Arsenal to win 2-1 to seize the top position, and after Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw at Swansea were still there are as City met the newly promoted West Ham United.

City have not played well this season, and in Europe despite a very good but unlucky performance against Real Madrid, look set for an early exit out of the Champions League.

Yet, they are still hanging in there – very much like their great rivals have done season after season.

As for the battle for the fourth place – once again, Everton are making the running on equal points with Spurs and just two points ahead of Arsenal, Fulham and West Ham, who are currently holding Manchester City 0-0 at half time.

And judging by City’s dismal performance so far, United will remain top of the Premier League.

Final Result – West Ham 0 Manchester City 0. That result means United are top, Chelsea second and City third.

🪖 Bani Walid ‘under seige’ one year after the death of Colonel Gaddafi 🇱🇾

TEMPLATE REPORT

Bani Walid, a former Gaddafi stronghold, remains to be ‘liberated’, one year after the capture and murder of the Libyan dictator, the new regime has admitted.

Speaking on Libyan television late on Friday,  Libyan leader Mohammed Magarief said the new regime had struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons.

The national congress leader claimed the town of Bani Walid, some 160 kms (100 miles) south of Tripoli, had become a ‘safehaven’ for those who were ‘outside the law.’

He blamed“delays” in the formation of the army and police and the failure to disarm and integrate former rebels for the chaos in Libya.

“The campaign to liberate the country has not been fully completed.

“…the spread of chaos that has lured the old regime to infiltrate the country’s institutions inside and to conspire with the regime loyalists on the outside.

“And the chaos has lured others to kidnappings, stealing, and to create non-legitimate prisons. What has happened in Bani Walid in the last few days falls under this … it has become a safe haven for a large number of those who are outside of the law.”

Militias, aligned with the Defence Ministry, have shelled the hilltop town of 70,000 for several days. Many of those in the militias were from the rival town of Misrata, that are angry at the death of rebel fighter Omran Shaban (pictured above) after two months in detention in Bani Walid.

Shaban, from Misrata, was the man who found Colonel Muammar Gaddafi hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011.

Libya’s congress ordered the Defence and Interior Ministries to find those responsible for abducting Shaban and suspected of torturing him to death.

It gave Bani Walid a deadline to hand them over.

A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with murdering two police officers and two men in Greater Manchester.

Dale Cregan is accused of murdering PC Fiona Bone, 32, and PC Nicola by Text-Enhance” href=”#”>Hughes, 23, in Mottram, Tameside on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old also appeared before Manchester magistrates accused of murdering David Short and his son Mark.

Another man held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder the officers has been released without charge.

Armed police surrounded Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning before Mr Cregan’s appearance.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Monday.

Mr Cregan sat down as he was brought into the dock but got to his feet after he was asked to stand by District Judge Jonathan Taaffe.

Wearing a dark blue sweatshirt, Mr Cregan had also grown a thick beard. He spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

Judge Taaffe then read out the eight charges the defendant faces, including that of murdering PC Bone and PC Hughes.

Sky ‘fit and proper’ to hold broadcast licences, Ofcom rules

20 Thursday Sep 2012

Media 📷, Murdoch, Ofcom, Ofcom and Sky, Politics 💼 🗳 🪖, Rupert Murdoch, Sky, Sky News

In a ruling on Thursday, Ofcom said: “In July 2011, in light of the public debate about phone hacking and other allegations, Ofcom confirmed that it had a duty to consider whether Sky was fit and proper to continue to hold its broadcast licences.

“Ofcom considers that, on the evidence currently available and having taken into account all the relevant factors, Sky is fit and proper to hold its broadcast licences.”

Ofcom said, however, that “should further evidence become available” it may review the issue. Criminal investigations into phone hacking continue and several court cases involving senior executives from News International are pending.

However, the conduct of James Murdoch, who resigned as chairman of BSkyB in April (but remains a non-executive director) and has also relinquished his role at the UK newspaper group, was questionable, Ofcom concluded.

The regulator said: “Ofcom considers on the basis of the evidence available to date… James Murdoch’s conduct in relation to events at NGN [the newspaper group] repeatedly fell short of the conduct to be expected of him as a chief executive officer and chairman.

“However, Ofcom considers that the evidence available to date does not provide a reasonable basis to conclude that James Murdoch deliberately engaged in any wrongdoing.”

While acknowledging that many of the circumstances over phone hacking were outside of Mr Murdoch’s control or unknown to him, Ofcom criticises severely his failure to make himself aware of the deepening scandal.

“We consider James Murdoch’s conduct, including his failure to initiate action on his own account on a number of occasions, to be both difficult to comprehend and ill-judged.

“We consider that the events… raise questions regarding James Murdoch’s competence in the handling of these matters, and his attitude towards the possibility of wrongdoing in the companies for which he was responsible,” Ofcom said.

The regulator said that Mr Murdoch’s non-executive role on the BSkyB board did not impact on its “fit and proper” test, because there were other “experienced individuals who would be expected to be capable of exercising effective independent oversight”.

Ofcom continued: “We recognise that whether it is appropriate for James Murdoch to be a director in light of the events is a matter for the board and shareholders of Sky.”

18 Tuesday Sep 2012

GUN crime, Manchester, UK

Police said both unarmed officers suffered fatal injuries during a “routine operation” in Hattersley, Tameside.

They were named at a police press conference as Fiona Bone,32, and Nicola Hughes, 26. (pictured at the bottom)

Fiona had five years of police service behind her, and had come out of her shell after being initially reserved.  She was planning to marry her partner.

Whilst Nicola, it was revealed, had spent three years in the police force and was known to be a chatterbox. She always had time for everyone. She loved Karate.

One of the police offiicers had died at the scene, the second at hospital.

They were attending a call that had come at 10 am, that there had been a burglary and were attacked with gun shots and a grenade.

A witness in Abbey Gardens said they had heard 10 gunshots and an explosion.

A short time after, Dale Cregan, 29, (pictured below) was arrested in connection with the officers’ deaths and two previous murders. He had walked into by Text-Enhance” href=”#”>Hyde police station shortly after the incident.

Police believe that Cregan had called police to report the burglary.

Taliban attack on Camp Bastion

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

The full extent of the Taliban’s audacious raid on Camp Bastion/Camp Leatherneck, a massive complex in southern Helmand province that serves as the main base for U.S. Marines and British forces only became clear on Sunday. It was a coordinated assault that destroyed six Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier jump-jets and “significantly” damaged two others, as well as some hangars.

The Taliban also destroyed three refueling stations.

Harrier jets cost an inflation-adjusted $30 million to $40 million apiece when they were acquired in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Armed with automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and suicide vests, they  organized into three teams and appeared “well-equipped, trained and rehearsed.”

According to the Coalition, the militants had penetrated one point of the perimeter fence. and the damage caused represents a major loss of combat
power –  around half a Harrier squadron

To have pulled this off, reports suggest that the attack would have required advance scouting and perhaps inside assistance.

When the Taliban attempted a similar assault on Kandahar Air Field in 2010, they failed.

This attack is a powerful demonstration that they have learned from previous mistakes and are now able to penetrate a base’s defences.

HELMAND – Two American soldiers were killed during a Taliban attack on the British base of Camp Bastion in Southern Afghanistan  last night.

The assault involved between 18 and 20 fighters who used small arms, rockets and mortars to attack the perimeter of the British base.

Prince Harry was at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan during the attack and a Taliban spokesman said he was the target.

The Taliban spokesman had at first said that the attack was a response to a US-made film mocking Islam.

They released a video of the attack, a snatch of which is pictured above.

The Prince, who is third in line to the British throne, is celebrating his 28th birthday and is in Afghanistan for four months on his second tour of duty.

He was not in any danger during this unprecedented assault on one of the world’s busiest airports.

Several other Nato troops were wounded, whilst one Taliban fighter was caught alive and the rest killed.

Camp Bastion which is situated in the middle of the desert is extremely heavily fortified.

An MoD spokesman said this was a significant attack adding: “there has been some damage to equipment which is still being assessed.”

“After swift action by ISAF forces, including UK personnel, the incident was contained.”

Three hundred and thirty coalition soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, of which 252 are from the US.
