This Budget has made one huge mistake – perhaps not in financial terms, for the wealthiest can easily afford this cut, and definitely not politically for a country that is undergoing such a severe recession will welcome the rich losing a bit of money, but certainly morally.
All children born in this country are future citizens, and should thus be treated in the same way, irrespective of the wealth of their parents they are born into.
Child Benefit signalled – if only symbolically – that this country had a stake in every child born, a principle which is no longer there.
(Child Benefit will be reduced incrementally when someone in a household earns more £50, 000 – and at £60, 000 it will be removed completely, source The Financial Times, 22-3-12)

George Osborne’s budget this week will not gain him any friends politically, however it may in the long-term be remembered as the first indication from the Coalition government that this country is on its way back.
By cutting the top rate of tax of 50% to 45% – still a huge amount of money – the Chancellor has also signalled who he thinks will lead that recovery.
This nation had two things to sell to the world – one is running out in the North Sea and other has got absolute battering because the economy is more exposed than most to the banking sector, of which the City of London is the driving force.
So, at a time when Nicolas Sarkozy is talking of introducing a 75% tax rate, the best way to attract the brightest from the world of banking, accountancy and finance over here is offer the most attractive rates.
Having said all this, they are also lucky to be here, something that they need to be made aware of as this nation begins its still painful process of recovering from the financial crisis of 2007.

Stewart Purvis was a news producer at ITN when the SAS were about to storm the Iranian embassy. He explains the decisions he took that resulted in those iconic pictures being broadcast on British television and how they changed his life. Watch it here
Background
The Iranian Embassy siege took place from 30 April to 5 May 1980, after a group of six armed men stormed the Iranian embassy in South Kensington, London.
The gunmen took 26 people hostage—mostly embassy staff, but several visitors and a police officer, who had been guarding the embassy, were also held. The hostage-takers, members of a group campaigning for the autonomy of Iran’s Khūzestān Province, demanded the release of Arab prisoners from jails in Khūzestān and their own safe passage out of the United Kingdom. The British government quickly resolved that safe passage would not be granted, and a siege ensued. Over the following days, police negotiators secured the release of five hostages in exchange for minor concessions, such as the broadcasting of the hostage-takers’ demands on British television.
By the sixth day of the siege the gunmen had become increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress in meeting their demands. That evening, they killed one of the hostages and threw his body out of the embassy. As a result, the British government ordered the Special Air Service (SAS), a special forces regiment of the British Army, to conduct an assault to rescue the remaining hostages. Shortly afterwards, soldiers abseiled from the roof of the building and forced entry through the windows. During the 17-minute raid, the SAS rescued all but one of the remaining hostages, and killed five of the six terrorists.

LONDON – Press TV could be back on the UK airwaves, Professor Stewart Purvis who was on the OFCOM board that made the decision to take the Iranian-owned broadcaster off air said today in an exclusive Template interview.
Prof Purvis said Press TV had not been able to meet European standards and regulations, highlighting the interview broadcast with a man who later said he had been under duress from the Iranian authorities as an example of this.
He did not however rule out a time when OFCOM and Press TV could meet and iron out the problems, that mean that viewers can only see the channel on the deregulated web.

KANDAHAR – Six British soldiers have been killed in southern Afghanistan after their vehicle was hit by an explosion, taking the total past 400 to 404. Five of soldiers were from 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and one from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment had been on patrol in Kandahar province on Tuesday, the MoD confirmed. Their families have been told.
This is the biggest single loss of UK life at one time in Afghanistan since a Nimrod crash killed 14 in 2006.
The MoD said the six soldiers were on a security patrol in a Warrior armoured fighting vehicle when it was caught in an explosion in Kandahar province. They had been travelling as part of a two Warrior patrol when the vehicle was hit at the junction of a road travelling east from Gereshk and another heading north to Lashkar Gah, the MoD said.
Most of the 9,500 UK troops in Afghanistan are expected to be withdrawn by the end of 2014. The last British soldier to be killed in Afghanistan was Senior Aircraftman Ryan Tomlin, of 2 Squadron, Royal Air Force Regiment, who died from gunshot wounds in Helmand on 13 February.

He did it his way..
ANALYSIS – So, Vladimir Putin has been elected to be President of Russia for the next six years. Those who spoke of the beginning of the end, may want to look at the high percentage of people who voted for their former Prime Minister, above 60 per cent, and at who is making the claims of vote rigging, an oligarch exactly the type of leader many Russians clearly do not want.
Putin loves Russia – when he said long live Russia, he meant it, however if Russia is really going to progress it can not continue with the same man in power forever and until real viable alternatives emerge, that is unfortunately what is going to happen.
