Novak Djokovic steamrollered his way to victory in yesterdayโ€™s Wimbledon menโ€™s final.

His opponent, the much fancied Rafael Nadal, did not have a response to the relentless barrage that he endured from the young Serb, who we  are told had at the age of twelve been sent away from home to realise his potential as a tennis player.

His performance was applauded by no less a person than the president of Serbia, which gives you an idea of how important winning Wimbledon was to this tiny Balkan state, which has been craving for acceptance amongst its fellow Christian European nations.

As pictures of Djokovic clasping the much prized trophy were appearing all over national newspapers in this country, and no doubt abroad, another man from Serbia was making his presence felt at the war crimes tribunal at the Hague.

Ratko Mladic was being thrown out of court for his behaviour.

He is accused of the massacre at Srebrenica, the worst atrocity in Europe since the Second World War.

Some 8, 000 men and boys are said to have been killed by forces commanded by the Serb warlord.

If Serbia is indeed to join Europe, and just as importantly gain the acceptance she so craves, then she needs to own up what was going on at that time, why her people had turned so violently on her neighbours, with whom the only difference was  religion and what she is doing to ensure that it never happens again.

David Cameron had an unsual visitor over the weekend.

I say unusual because he says that he is the democratically elected President of Pakistan, and yet I have still to find a single Pakistani who says that he ever voted for Asif Ali Zardari.

When Pakistan is mentioned in the press, and that is by no means just in the western press, the words โ€˜troubledโ€™, โ€˜on the brinkโ€™ and ย โ€˜descentโ€™ are often accompanied as usual descriptions. Pakistani national identity is not very strong, it is claimed, by no less a person than the former Balouchistani rebel, Ahmed Rashid, who has really come of his own since the events of that dark Tuesday in the year 2001.

Yet, a casual conversation with any Pakistani wil tell you other wise.

It is widely believed that the root cause of terrorism in Pakistan is America and India. Ameticaโ€™s standing as a friend is belied by the CIA-sponsored drone attacks that continue to this day and by the fact they appear to have carte blanche when it comes to their dealings with Islamabad. Go further, to the north west โ€“ to the so called tribal areas, a name that was out of date when it was first used by the colonial power of Great Britain โ€“ and those people, aย  thousand of whom were killed by drone strikes last year, will tell you that the Great Power that says that it is their countryโ€™s friend is aiming break up their nation, so that they can seize the atom bomb with the long term aim of a war with first Iran and then finally with that emerging Great Power that is China.

Listening to this, reminds me of the time when The Ottoman Empire โ€“ which Pakistan does bear some resemblance to โ€“ wasย making its mind up with regards to which was its real friend, the emerging power of Germany or that ofย Great Britain. Then, there were many warnings from their former allies of the dangers of allying itself with the dreaded Kaiser.

Pakistanโ€™s relationship with China is solid, however America believes that there is always a ย price to be paid for such closeness to the much feared Peopleโ€™s Republic.

That may be the case, but for the moment, the people of Pakistan โ€“ a large proportion of whom are below the age of 25 – ย have to live through the everyday cycle of violence, bombings, whilst having watch to politicians of the calibre of President Asif Ali Zardari jet around the world to meet democratically-elected politicians like David Cameron.

And Another Thing (..or how not to behave with China)

China signed a trade deal with Germany that was almost nine times the size of the one secured at London. If you consider the fact that David Cameron had managed to get trade agreement worth  ยฃ1.4 bn to British companies, this will give you an idea of how much more that amounts to. So why did Wen Jiabao refuse to shake Angela Merkelโ€™s hand after a press conference and why during their exchange to the media did the Chinese Premier take his earphones off in utter disgust?

Europeans had no right to lecture China about human rights, he is reported to have said.

Watching Wen Jiabao on the world stage, takes you back say a hundred years when two nations were then emerging as major players in their own right.

One of  them was Japan and the other was of course Germany.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ On Europe (..and where it goes after its Greek Crisis) ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท

ANALYSIS – Is the current Greek crisis going to be Europeโ€™s Lehman moment, and if so how will this affect how Europe is seen by the rest of the world? Ironically, for the most of the last decade, the European Union was seen by the United States as her only serious economic rival. The problem was, said Henry Kissinger, knowing which phone number to use. Today, Germany and France are exercising their minds and their peopleโ€™s patience with the best way to solve Greeceโ€™s catch-22 โ€“ if she is allowed to sink, what will this do to the confidence investors would have in the Euro, and if she is allowed to continue on as before then the black holeย is only going to getย deeper and deeper.

Europeโ€™s army, Nato, is currently engaged in operations in Afghanistan and Libya, where it has not performed well. The best that can be said of these campaigns is that at least her soldiers are getting some combat experience, which should hold them in good stead should another crisis flare up in the Balkans โ€“ few of us will ever forget how useless they were when faced by Milosevic during the break-up of Yugoslavia.

Then, the Americans intervened to preserve Nato, as they have done in Afghanistan and may have to do in Libya.

Trouble is, America will not be able to get Europe out of its current economic crisis.

That appears to be left to China, andย she has already indicated which phone numberย she will be using first โ€“ namely that of Germany.

Throwing stones at China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ

ANALYSIS – The year is 1900, and a major rebellion is underway in the major provinces of China. The young men who are in revolt are objecting to the West โ€˜taking overโ€™ their country. They attack all symbols as they see it of all this western intrusion, including railways. The Boxer rebellion is put down by an international force that includes Great Britain, France, Italy and the emerging nations of Japan, the United States of America and Germany. It would take China more than eighty years to emerge from the weight of unfair treaties and capitulations that the European nations had demanded from her, in what they called the open door. Today, China has become a superpower, a serious rival to America for global leadership, so serious that Obama has identified himself as his countryโ€™s first โ€˜Pacificโ€™ President, who may also be the last to take Europe seriously. So, Wen Jiabaoโ€™s visit to London yesterday should have been a wonderful opportunity for David Cameron to foster a closer relationship with this economic powerhouse, given this countryโ€™s current predicament. Instead, we had the now customary spectacle of the Chinese Premier being lectured in front of the press on human rights by the man currently in the middle of a questionable war in Libya.

Chinaโ€™s human rights record in Tibet and Kashgar, as well as her attitude to freedom of expression are well documented and are rightly highlighted. However, those who lecture should also take a long hard at themselves โ€“ China emerged as a superpower after a horrendous period in her history which some of the nations who came to put down the Boxer rebellion had a hand in creating.

If China has moved on from that time, then perhaps so should Great Britain, who should also stop treatingย a former colony as a developing economy and take a leaf from the United States of America. If a report in The Financial Timesย is to be believed, Britain has lost its standing in Chinaโ€™s view, rating below Germany, France, Italy and Spain. ย Hopefully, Wen Jiabao andย the Chinese leadershipย will settle down to the line of thinking that a large number of us over here share, that Cameron does not know what he is doing, and that perhaps more disturbingly, he has appointed a Chancellor who is completely clueless.

Afghan Pullout

Not anytimeย soonย

Barack Obama has announced that his nation will pull out 33, 000 of her surge troops by next September. ย Earlier in the week, ย America admitted to holding talks with the Taliban. Both events can be seen as a logical conclusion to the American Presidentโ€™s address earlier this month in which he said that the man responsible for the greatest mass murder on his countryโ€™s soil was now dead. On the face of it, the logical conclusion of all this would a complete American pullout of Afghanistan. History has shown, however, ย that where Great Powers are concerned, nothing can be taken for granted. It was such for Great Britain and Imperial Spain, and despite Americaโ€™s repeated denials at being an empire it will be the same for the Stars and Stripes. The last time, America found herself embroiled in a war she could not get out was of course in Vietnam, which had become a defeat in 1968 after the Tet offensive which led to the dramatic annoucement at the time by the then President Lyndon Johnson that he would not be seeking a second term at office. It took another seven years for them to leave, during which time they had held talks at least twice with their sworn enemy, the Vietcong, on each time the demand of their foes was the same โ€“ a complete withdrawal. Today, the demands of the Taliban are the same โ€“ a complete withdrawal, but with some 70,000 US troops still remaining after 2012, those in Afghanistan who are hoping to see the last helicopter gunship leaving the skies of Kabul may have to wait a while longer.
