BREAKING NEWS – Chelsea are European Champions

Penalties –  3 – 4

FT Bayern Munich 1 – 1 Chelsea

       Muller 83                    Drogba 88

Bayern dominated the first half, but did not make it count squandering a hatful of chances, with Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller missing the mark far too often.

The pattern continued in the second.

When Thomas Muller finally made it count eight minutes before time, it looked like it was all over for Roberto di Matteo’s men. However, Drogba appeared out of nowhere two minutes before time to head in an equaliser and it was game on.

Chelsea got back in for the next five mnutes, which included three minutes of extra time, and when Drogba sent a free kick into the crowd the game finished 1-1 after normal time.

Three minutes into extra time though, a Drogba foul on Franck Ribery opened the way for a Arjen Robben penalty which was sensationally saved by Petr Cech.

From now onwards, it appeared that the omens were good for Chelsea and that Bayern would rue all those squandered chances, which included that miss by Robben, as well a great one early in the second half of extra time.

Bayern continued to attack, but they just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net as the game went into a penalty shoot out with that man Drogba sealing the deal.

This is Chelsea’s Moment

TEMPLATE COMMENTARY

Nothing about Roberto Di Matteo’s side and how it has managed to get into theย Champions Leagueย final to meet Bayern Munich has been convincing.

Not the performances, which include a very fortunateย defeat of a Barcelona side whose manager was clearly tired of looking at the endless stream of silverware coming his way.

Nor the appearance of his players whose best days are clearly behind them – ย that includes the once great Drogba as well those players that have for some reason made it into the England squad for the summer’s European Championships.

So, it would take a brave man to bet against a German side that boastsย  amongst others, the latest Dutch superstar, one Arjenย Robben in its ranks.

But Chelsea, have got a momentum, similar to the way Liverpool and Manchester United before them had going for them.

Call it the ‘It’ factor, call it what you like – they have team spirit that will mean they will overcome this Bayern Munich sideย in Munich to become European Club Champions.

The performance will not please their billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, however that will be an argument for another day – for this is Chelsea’s moment.

The Euro

Elder statesmen in a barren landscape..

With Italy the latest nation to suffer under the burden of being linked to a single currency, very real questions are being asked about the future of the Euro.

TheEconomistย says that Europe has not addressed the fundamentalย changes around her – namely the rise of a younger slimmerย ย Asia at the cost of this grand once great old man.

Today’s Financial Times outlines a three-trierEurope with France-Germany as the engine, the driver of a system thatย relegates eastern Europe to the periphery.

Of course,ย Gordon Brown did warn everyone that France – like Germany – was exposed because of her banks.

So what will become a unit that once touted as a serious economic challenger to the Unitedย States of America?

And will things ever be the same again?

The international system created by Europe was never perfect, and frankly the world outside this club of nations was roped into joining it.

Some powers suffered like China, some simply vanished – like the Ottoman Empire, whose lossย the Islamic World has been suffering the consequences of to this day, especially in a world order based on power.

The history of the end of the ‘Sick Man of Europe’ can be traced back to the creation of the tiny kingdom of Greece, a cause championed byย Shelley and Byron.

The behaviour of the main players at that time towards this once great and nowย grand old man was racist.

(Ever wonder where Adolf Hitler some of his ideas from?)

Now a century or so on, with the Eurozone crisis sparked by a bankrupt Greece, how will the main players on the international scene deal with their once great andย now grand friend.

With America already signalling thatย she will be looking East,ย how will China viewย this potentiallyย barren economic wasteland, which still fights wars against weaker nations, whilst lecturing others about human rights?

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ On Europe (..and where it goes after its Greek Crisis) ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท

ANALYSIS – Is the current Greek crisis going to be Europeโ€™s Lehman moment, and if so how will this affect how Europe is seen by the rest of the world? Ironically, for the most of the last decade, the European Union was seen by the United States as her only serious economic rival. The problem was, said Henry Kissinger, knowing which phone number to use. Today, Germany and France are exercising their minds and their peopleโ€™s patience with the best way to solve Greeceโ€™s catch-22 โ€“ if she is allowed to sink, what will this do to the confidence investors would have in the Euro, and if she is allowed to continue on as before then the black holeย is only going to getย deeper and deeper.

Europeโ€™s army, Nato, is currently engaged in operations in Afghanistan and Libya, where it has not performed well. The best that can be said of these campaigns is that at least her soldiers are getting some combat experience, which should hold them in good stead should another crisis flare up in the Balkans โ€“ few of us will ever forget how useless they were when faced by Milosevic during the break-up of Yugoslavia.

Then, the Americans intervened to preserve Nato, as they have done in Afghanistan and may have to do in Libya.

Trouble is, America will not be able to get Europe out of its current economic crisis.

That appears to be left to China, andย she has already indicated which phone numberย she will be using first โ€“ namely that of Germany.

Throwing stones at China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ

ANALYSIS – The year is 1900, and a major rebellion is underway in the major provinces of China. The young men who are in revolt are objecting to the West โ€˜taking overโ€™ their country. They attack all symbols as they see it of all this western intrusion, including railways. The Boxer rebellion is put down by an international force that includes Great Britain, France, Italy and the emerging nations of Japan, the United States of America and Germany. It would take China more than eighty years to emerge from the weight of unfair treaties and capitulations that the European nations had demanded from her, in what they called the open door. Today, China has become a superpower, a serious rival to America for global leadership, so serious that Obama has identified himself as his countryโ€™s first โ€˜Pacificโ€™ President, who may also be the last to take Europe seriously. So, Wen Jiabaoโ€™s visit to London yesterday should have been a wonderful opportunity for David Cameron to foster a closer relationship with this economic powerhouse, given this countryโ€™s current predicament. Instead, we had the now customary spectacle of the Chinese Premier being lectured in front of the press on human rights by the man currently in the middle of a questionable war in Libya.

Chinaโ€™s human rights record in Tibet and Kashgar, as well as her attitude to freedom of expression are well documented and are rightly highlighted. However, those who lecture should also take a long hard at themselves โ€“ China emerged as a superpower after a horrendous period in her history which some of the nations who came to put down the Boxer rebellion had a hand in creating.

If China has moved on from that time, then perhaps so should Great Britain, who should also stop treatingย a former colony as a developing economy and take a leaf from the United States of America. If a report in The Financial Timesย is to be believed, Britain has lost its standing in Chinaโ€™s view, rating below Germany, France, Italy and Spain. ย Hopefully, Wen Jiabao andย the Chinese leadershipย will settle down to the line of thinking that a large number of us over here share, that Cameron does not know what he is doing, and that perhaps more disturbingly, he has appointed a Chancellor who is completely clueless.
