First, it was the Koreans, or was it the Taiwanese, who undercut everyone producing cheap goods for the rich global north.
They were followed by the growth story that was Indonesia, where branded goods were created in battery like conditions by human beings who were treated no better than hens laying eggs for supermarket chains.
And then came the Chinese miracle, where poor peasants worked endless hours in conditions that no one from the outside world was ever allowed to see, flooding western markets with ever cheaper goods.
Now, it’s the turn of Bangladesh, the Third World nation that will go that much lower, push their desperately poor workers that much further to produce goods for brands like Lee Cooper, and the Arcadia owned BHS.
It’s a given that child labour is employed, its a given that the poor mainly women are expected to worked impossibly long hours to meet deadlines and targets set by companies who are answerable only to the shareholders, and who clearly turn a blind eye to Dickensian work conditions.
When a building called the Rana Plaza collapsed in Dacca, more than a thousand souls perished under the rubble. Like 9/11, it was a completely avoidable disaster, but unlike the attacks on the twin towers the world did not take action to find and punish the culprits.
Instead, things have largely continued as before, as last night’s EXPOSURE programme on ITV showed. Sure, there have been closures and punishments, but it won’t do. It won’t do when weak women – often too tired or frightened to speak – are kicked for not standing straight by supervisors who think it’s their given right to mistreat workers because they have been set impossibly difficult deadlines by multi billion dollar companies who employ the cheapest possible labour through using middle men and fixers.
Bangladesh is proud of its textile industry and the chances are the ‘Made in Bangladesh’ label will be the most familiar one to anyone buying goods in the west – after of course that of China. No doubt in the future, there will be another nation that will go that much lower, push their workers that much harder to meet ever tighter deadlines for the cheapest possible price. And it’s a state of affairs the ‘World’ does not seem able or willing to do anything about.

Several childrenΒ have been injuredΒ afterΒ Israeli forces shelled areas east of Khan Younis. The Israeli military said it had targeted two members of “global jihadist” groups which were suspected of involvement in a cross-border attack from Egypt in June that left one Israeli dead.
Medical sourcesΒ in GazaΒ said an Israeli shell had landed east of Khan Younis, injuring five people, among them several children.
Earlier today, rockets launched from Gaza landed in Israel’s Eshkol region and near Kerem Shalom, althoughΒ Β no-one was hurt.
Shrapnel from the mortars and rockets fired into southern Israel on Monday caused some damage to at least one building in Eshkol.
Afterwards, the local authorities asked residents to stay close to shelters.
The military wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said the attack was a response to an Israeli air strike on Sunday.
Eight civilians, including two children, were injured in that strike, when a missile hit a motorbike ridden by two militants as it travelled through the southern town of Rafah.
One of the militants, Abdullah Maqawi, died of his wounds on Monday, while the other is seriously hurt.
Hamas’s military wing, the IzzΒ al-Din QassamΒ Brigades, and that of Islamic Jihad, the al-Quds Brigades, announced that the rocket fire was a response to “Zionist crimes”.
“In response to the injury of civilians in the most recent strike on Rafah, the QassamΒ Brigades and the al-Quds Brigades fired a number of rockets at enemy military positions,” a Hamas statement said.
In a statement, the Israeli military said: “In response to this morning’s rocket barrage at southern Israeli communities, the [Israel Defence Forces] targeted Hamas terror activity sites and terrorist squads responsible for the rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.
“The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel. The Hamas terror organisation is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.”
More than 470 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel this year, not including those launched on Monday, the statement added.

The mother of missing April Jones (picture above)Β broke down into tearsΒ as she appealed for information.
“It’s been 36 hours since April was taken from us and there must be someone out there who knows where she is and can help the police find her,”Β said Coral Jones (pictured below)Β during a police appeal.
“We are desperate for any news. April is only five years old – please, please help find her.”

Det Supt Reg Bevan, who is leading the inquiry, said they had received over 400 calls from member of public since his earlier appeal for information on the whereabouts of Mark Bridger between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon.
“We are actively working through that information,” he said.
He went on to say: “We are focusing on over 20 scenes. We have searched several of them in the Machynlleth area. These searches are continuing.”

ANALYSIS
No one won in today’s verdict at Chester Crown Court.
Not the parents of Shafilea Ahmed who have lost liberty as well as their daughter.
Nor the remaining children, one of whom was the chief prosecution witness.
That her parents were acting out of a sense of duty to their family is something that has been highlighted through out this case, from the day when the wayward teenager went missing.
That sense of honour was of course misplaced and resulted in them committing murder.
Although, this was a criminal act, Shafilea’s parents were not criminals.
They felt they were doing the best they could for their daughter who they do still love.
Trouble is we live in a culture where children are encouraged to rebel against their parents, and often that rebellion leads to actions that affects their long-term health and welfare.
The streets of Britain are full of such sad souls
Often they have been thrown out, sometimes they simply have run away.
In this case, Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed just wanted their daughter to stay.

Thomas Lubanga has been sentenced to 14 years in jail for recruiting and using child soldiers in his rebel army in 2002 and 2003.
Taking into account time spent in custody, this will mean the warlord from Congo will now serve a further eight years.
Lubanga would go to people’s homes and ask them to donate something for the war effort, the court heard. He would ask for cash, a cow, or for a child to fight for his rebel army. The court was shown video footage of Lubanga at a training camp, where children as young as 10 were being prepared for battle.
Another video showed young children working as bodyguards.
Lubanga became the first person to be convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) since it was set up 10 years ago.
The conflict between ethnic groups in Ituri, north-eastern DR Congo, is estimated to have killed 60,000 people.
The Lubanga case is closely related to the current fighting in DR Congo, where forces loyal to Gen Bosco Ntaganda are threatening the main eastern city of Goma.Gen Ntaganda has been accused of the same crimes as Lubanga and his M23 group resumed its rebellion shortly after Lubanga was convicted.
Lubanga was arrested in March 2005 by UN peacekeepers, along with other militiamen.
Although, he showed no emotion as he was sentenced, Lubanga cried when he was transferred to The Hague in March 2006.
