FA Press Conference unveiling Roy Hodgson as England Manager

01 Tuesday May 2012

TEMPLATE REPORT

FA Chairman David Bernstein confirmed that only one club was approached for the position of England manager and that the decision to appoint Roy Hodgson was based on his experience and how he had performed with the resources available at club level, as well as international level, which the FA believes means that he will make the transition from Club manager to England coach.

Bernstein mentioned Stuart Pearce, but did not refer to the public’s choice of Harry Redknapp.

He did say that there was a shortlist of more than two people, and that West Bromwich had asked for Hodgson to remain their coach for the last two games of the Premier League.

He said that the FA had decided on Hodgson a month ago and would not discuss any other name for the position.

Adding that he was only the only England manager to come to the position with international and tournament football experience.

Roy Hodgson said he has moved forward from the unhappy time he had as coach of Liverpool.

When asked about his decision to play in apartheid South Africa forty years ago, he said he had made that decision on football reasons and that he detested the regime.

Hodgson said that he had received a voice mail message from Harry Redknapp congratulating him on his appointment and hoped they would remain friends and not rivals.

Pep Guardiola has decided he will not be Barcelona manager at the end of the season. The 41-year-old was appointed in 2008 and has led the Catalan club to 13 trophies. However, during this season Barcelona look like losing  to Real Madrid in the La Liga and were of course knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea.

He will be succeeded by current assistant Tito Vilanova, after deciding not to renew his rolling one-year contract.

“The reason is simple: four years is enough, ” he said

“I’m drained and I need to fill up. The demand has been very high and a manager must be strong.”

Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president, has been found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes during the Sierra Leone civil war .

A UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

He will serve his sentence in a British prison.

The events for which Taylor was charged run  from November 1996 to January 2002.

Taylor provided rebel armies with weapons in exchange for diamonds during their operations to retake important districts and cities in Sierra Leone in 1998 and 1999.

Between November and December 1998, Taylor met a rebel leader, known as Bockarie in Monrovia, where they devised a two-pronged attack on Kono, Kenema and Freetown.

According to a 44-page summary of the judgement, Taylor had emphasised to Bockarie the need to first attack Kono District and told Bockarie to make the operation “fearful” in order to pressure the Government of Sierra Leone into negotiations on the release of another rebel leader Foday Sankoh from prison, as well as to use “all means” to get to Freetown.  Subsequently, Bockarie named the operation “Operation No Living Thing,” implying that anything that stood in their way should be eliminated. …”

Britain’s economy shrunk by 0.2 percent in the first three months of 2012 taking it back into recession.

The Office for National Statisticsย blamedย a sharp fall in construction outputย for the contraction.

A recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of contraction.ย  The economy shrank by 0.3% in the fourth quarter of 2011

The ONS said output of the production industries decreased by 0.4%, construction decreased by 3% and output of the service sector increased by 0.1%.

It added that a fall in public sector investment had contributed to the particularly large fall in the construction sector.

Suspended Labour Peer Lord Nazir Ahmed has told The Template that he did not call for a ยฃ10m bounty for the capture of US Presidents Barack Obama and George Bush.

He was reported to have made the remark by a Pakistani newspaper.

But Lord Ahmed said the story was “lies” and that he had never mentioned a bounty for President Obama or Bush.

The Express Tribune said the comments were a response to a US reward being offered for the capture of a Pakistani radical, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed who founded Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group which is blamed by India for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which 166 people were killed.

Lord Ahmed is said to have made the remarks at a reception in Haripur on Friday.

Labour has suspend the peer, pending an investigation.

ANALYSIS

The Taliban had vowed retaliation for the massacre of civilians in Kandahar.

Today they claimed this was it.

This was retaliationย also for that video of US marines urinating on dead Afghans, as well as for that infamous incident – for this part of the world – when the Koran was burned in Bagram Airbase.

So, said their spokesman an hour or so after claiming the start of their Spring Offensive.

At the time of writing, reports suggest the fighting has not stopped, asย what are meant to be the most securely guarded areas on earth are being attacked almost at will by aย very small number of highly focused men.

Who would have imaginedย that heavily guarded embassies, fortresses like Hamid Karzai’s own Presidential compound,ย would be pickedย almost at will by fighters who appear out of nowhere and then vanish.

Is this the Taliban’s ‘Tet’ moment – it would appear that is exactly what is unfolding in the Afghan capital and surrounding cities.
