FA Press Conference unveiling Roy Hodgson as England Manager

01 Tuesday May 2012

England, football, Roy Hodgson

TEMPLATE REPORT

FA Chairman David Bernstein confirmed that only one club was approached for the position of England manager and that the decision to appoint Roy Hodgson was based on his experience and how he had performed with the resources available at club level, as well as international level, which the FA believes means that he will make the transition from Club manager to England coach.

Bernstein mentioned Stuart Pearce, but did not refer to the public’s choice of Harry Redknapp.

He did say that there was a shortlist of more than two people, and that West Bromwich had asked for Hodgson to remain their coach for the last two games of the Premier League.

He said that the FA had decided on Hodgson a month ago and would not discuss any other name for the position.

Adding that he was only the only England manager to come to the position with international and tournament football experience.

Roy Hodgson said he has moved forward from the unhappy time he had as coach of Liverpool.

When asked about his decision to play in apartheid South Africa forty years ago, he said he had made that decision on football reasons and that he detested the regime.

Hodgson said that he had received a voice mail message from Harry Redknapp congratulating him on his appointment and hoped they would remain friends and not rivals.

Pep Guardiola has decided he will not be Barcelona manager at the end of the season. The 41-year-old was appointed in 2008 and has led the Catalan club to 13 trophies. However, during this season Barcelona look like losing  to Real Madrid in the La Liga and were of course knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea.

He will be succeeded by current assistant Tito Vilanova, after deciding not to renew his rolling one-year contract.

“The reason is simple: four years is enough, ” he said

“I’m drained and I need to fill up. The demand has been very high and a manager must be strong.”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president, has been found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes during the Sierra Leone civil war .

A UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

He will serve his sentence in a British prison.

The events for which Taylor was charged run  from November 1996 to January 2002.

Taylor provided rebel armies with weapons in exchange for diamonds during their operations to retake important districts and cities in Sierra Leone in 1998 and 1999.

Between November and December 1998, Taylor met a rebel leader, known as Bockarie in Monrovia, where they devised a two-pronged attack on Kono, Kenema and Freetown.

According to a 44-page summary of the judgement, Taylor had emphasised to Bockarie the need to first attack Kono District and told Bockarie to make the operation “fearful” in order to pressure the Government of Sierra Leone into negotiations on the release of another rebel leader Foday Sankoh from prison, as well as to use “all means” to get to Freetown.  Subsequently, Bockarie named the operation “Operation No Living Thing,” implying that anything that stood in their way should be eliminated. …”

Rupert Murdoch at the Leveson Inquiry

ANALYSIS

Yesterday, he described Gordon Brown as ‘unbalanced’, someone who had declared war on News Corporation in reponse to The Sun switching its support from Labour to David Cameron’s Conservatives.

Today, Rupert Murdoch admitted that he had missed the ‘cover-up’ at the News of the World, a newspaper he also said should have been closed down long ago.

When asked who the buck stopped with at all his newspapers, he replied the Editor, he, Rupert Murdoch, had of course overall responsibility, however he had delegated.

If the 81-year-old the standing of the media mogul had suffered from the phone hacking scandal, then his appearance today and yesterday at the Royal Courts of Justice may have gone someway to recovering any lost ground.

Great power is best exercised when it is understated, especially when it is exposed before the glare of the media spotlight.

And that is exactly what the world saw, as arguably one of the most powerful men in the world explained how he did not intefere in the running of his newspapers, content or welfare of staff and how he closed the NoW after revelations that the phone of tragic schoolgirl Milly Dowler had been hacked. He said he “could feel the blast coming in the window, almost”, as soon as the story broke.

All this will of course make the headlines, however what was perhaps more telling was how he viewed the future of the newspaper industry in the midst of the current electronic revolution.

He gave newspapers another ten years, this from a man for whom running a newspaper is clearly a passion.

How would the new media make money, well the Huffington Post was getting millions of hits but was struggling to make anything.

There are bloggers out there whose work can reach any where.

Work can be pilfered and then put out there with little or no respect for intellectual property rights.

If this was some else talking, then it could be dismissed as yet another world view, however here is the owner of The Sun (as well as Sunday), The Times and The Sunday Times admitting that he could not see a long term future for the newspaper industry.

E-Mails between Jeremy Hunt and News Corp over BSkyB bid

24 Tuesday Apr 2012

Tags

Jeremy Hunt, Leveson Inquiry, Murdoch

Frederic Michel, was head of public affairs at News Corp.

A June 2010 email said that Mr Michel had had a call from Mr Hunt’s adviser, Adam Smith, who said he believed that “the UK government would be supportive throughout the process”.

In an email sent on 15 November 2010, Mr Michel told Mr Murdoch “Jeremy” had tried to call him but had received “very strong legal advice not to meet us today as the current process is treated as a judicial one”. “My advice would be not to meet him today as it would be counter-productive for everyone, but you could have a chat with him on his mobile which is completely fine, and I will liaise with his team privately as well,” he wrote.

In another email – on 23 January 2011 – Mr Michel said: “He wants us to take the heat, with him, in the next 2 weeks”. He continued: “He very specifically said that he was keen to get to the same outcome and wanted JRM to understand he needs to build some political cover on the process.”

The next day Mr Michel told Mr Murdoch he had managed to get some information on Mr Hunt’s statement on the BSkyB bid to Parliament due the next day “although absolutely illegal..>!”.

Mr Murdoch told the inquiry that the reference had been a “joke”. “I think the ‘greater than’ and the exclamation point there are a wink – it’s a joke,” he said. Mr Michel’s written submissions to the inquiry suggested that he never had direct contact with Mr Hunt, despite giving the impressions in emails that he had. He explained that the “JH” or “he” in his emails were shorthand for Jeremy Hunt’s team. Mr Jay suggested that liaising with Mr Hunt via Mr Michel was a way of avoiding the appearance of inappropriate informal contact over the bid.

But Mr Murdoch said that it was “acceptable and part of the process”.

The Manchester Derby on Monday, April 30.

23 Monday Apr 2012

football, Manchester City, Manchester City and Manchester United, Manchester Uinted, Premier League, Roberto Mancini

Last October, Manchester City put six past their bitter rivals, and it appeared to most commentators that only one club from that great city of football could possibly lift the Premier League Trophy.

Well, the wily old Alex Ferguson proved them all wrong – yet again.

And here we are just a week away from the most important game of the Premier League and no one – including Roberto Mancini himself – is giving City a chance.

Yet, City have Tevez and will be able to use that player called Mario Balotelli for this game – as well as a number of other great players.

United have one thing going for them – a manager who was a legend many years ago and who is continuing through the sheer force of his personality, experience, expertise – and many, many other skills – to project a very average team to ever greater heights.

Whether that will be enough on Monday, I very much doubt.

It won’t be a walkover there will be no 6-1 rout this time – but City will win this game and go on to become Champions for the first time.

That’s because Everton by putting four past the leaders over the weekend showed this United side despite being coached by Sir Alex Ferguson are not the United of old.

Sudan rules out talks with the South

Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir said: “We will not negotiate with the South’s government, because they don’t understand anything but the language of the gun and ammunition.” He was quoted by the Reuters News agency telling this to his troops on arrival to the oilfield and border town of Heglig, which had been occupied by South Sudanese troops nearly two weeks ago, and which Sudan says it has retaken.

South Sudan – which was bombed by Sudanese jets – says it had retreated from Heglig.
