The West must reject the coup in Egypt

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

On Saturday, more than seventy people were killed as Egyptian security forces attempted to disperse a large demonstration by supporters of the ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

And yesterday, thousands more camped in three parts of Cairo in defiance of a warning from the army, the very army that claims to have their interests at heart.

Today, Catherine Ashton, from the EU, met the installed President, the head of the army and the current leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, who would do well to keep his head down, given the current soundings from the military about what they intend to do with the ousted democratically elected head of the Arab World’s most populous nation.

Ashton urged an ‘inclusive’ process.

That like other soundings from commentators – referring to realpolitik – will not do.

For Egypt is at a crossroads – if the Muslim Brotherhood are not allowed to complete their democratic mandate, no one in Egypt that is not from the army or the elite will ever have faith in the ballot box again.

That means 75 per cent of the population who voted in last year’s historic election for the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups, will have no voice in their own country.

And that’s a recipe for a civil war.

Bangladesh War Crimes – When hating Pakistan is not enough

19 Friday Jul 2013

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Two more members of Bangladesh’s Jamaat -e-Islami party have been convicted of war crimes relating to the country’s secession from Pakistan in 1971.

That makes a total of seven – six of whom could be hanged, the other told that he escaped the noose because he was 90-years-old.

All but one of the ‘convicted’ members of Jamaat-e-Islami are accused of committing appalling crimes against intellectuals in Dhaka, alongside the Pakistan army.

Another – who was minister of social justice in the previous government – has been convicted of genocide and torture against Hindus.

More are to follow.

For their part the Islamic Party say they are being punished for siding with Pakistan. Independent observers say Jamaat-e-Islami are being gutted in an effort finish them as a political force in Bangladesh.

The War Crimes Tribunal set up by the daughter of the assassinated founder of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has been criticised for its lack of legitimacy by international observers.

Hasina’s rivals, the Bangladesh national Party, say the current government is trying to weaken the opposition by crushing one of it key allies in the run-up to forthcoming national elections.

Of course, this is much more.

By destroying the country’s leading Islamist party, Sheikh Hasina is signaling that her country’s future lies with India and the West, at a time when it may be in the country’s long-term interest to look at China and Pakistan.

She, like her father, Mujib Islam, sees no place for Islam in the political life of Bangladesh.

As well as this, she is of course also ignoring what happened once Bangladesh won its independence – the appalling actions of Indian-trained paramilitaries on members of Jamaat-e-Islami and anyone they accused of siding with Pakistan.

In this context, the War Crimes Tribunal can be seen for what it is – the latest act of revenge conducted by a nation that really hasn’t faced-up to what really happened in 1971, and after.

And until that happens people like Sheikh Hasina’s father will never get justice, for it wasn’t the Pakistan army or Jamaat-e-Islami who threw his bullet ridden unclothed body onto the street.

That crime was conducted by Bangladesh’s own army.

And they were not the only ones.

Struggle for the soul of Egypt as army cracks down on Muslim Brotherhood ANALYSIS

_68572111_68572110TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Friday has been designated as the day of rejection by the ousted government of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The military who say that their actions are not a coup almost immediately fired in to protesters who had gathered outside the building where they believe to be where the toppled President Mohammed Morsi is being held.

Three people were killed as a result.

And the newly appointed interim President has suspended the upper house of parliament which was the only functioning arm of government, after the suspension last year of the lower house.

And still this is not a coup.

Key figures of the Muslim Brotherhood are also under arrest, as the supporters of the largest political and social party in Egypt gather on the streets, many no doubt wondering whether they will come back alive.

What we are seeing unfolding on our screens is the struggle for the future of Egypt.

If no one says anything, the military will have been allowed to stage a coup which by any standard makes a mockery of the idea of democracy.

What we are also seeing is struggle for the soul of Egypt, a nation which has known decades and decades of corrupt and incompetent military rule and which after one year may never see democracy ever again.

’46 dead’ as protests over Bangladesh war crimes verdict reach a third day

TEMPLATE REPORT

Three people have been killed in Bangladesh after demonstrators protesting against the death sentence on an Islamist party leader clashed with police for a third day running.

Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was sentenced on Thursday on charges including murder, rape and torture during the war of independence in 1971.

Since then, at least 46 people have died in riots across the country.

Mr Sayeedi’s Jamaat-e-Islami party says the tribunal is politically motivated.

Mr Sayeedi is the third defendant to be convicted by the tribunal, which was set up in 2010 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government to deal with those accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces who attempted to stop East Pakistan (as Bangladesh was then) from becoming an independent country.

Earlier this month, another Jamaat leader, Abdul Kader Mullah, was sentenced to life for crimes against humanity.

In January, former party leader Abul Kalam Azad was found guilty in absentia of eight charges of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death.

The tribunal is trying a total of nine Jamaat leaders and two members of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Human rights groups have said the tribunal falls short of international standards.

Jamaat is an ally of the BNP, which is led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Ms Zia says the war crimes trials are politically motivated to target the opposition. The government has denied the allegation.

Jamaat and Ms Zia’s party have called for a three-day nationwide general strike starting Sunday.

Palestinian boy of 12 shot dead by Israeli forces

TEMPLATE REPORT

The boy named by Hamas was Yunes Abu Daqqa was hit by rounds fired by an Israeli army helicopter.  He was reportedly killed on Thursday when clashes  erupted after militants opened fire on Israeli forces that had entered Gaza.

“Terrorists opened fire at IDF [Israeli Defence Forces] soldiers while they were performing routine activity adjacent to the security fence,” Israel’s military spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said.

The AFP news agency quoted Hamas health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra as saying the boy, Yunes Abu Daqqa, “was killed by bullets fired from an Israeli helicopter during an incursion” in southern Gaza.

Soon after, a large tunnel blew up near the border fence, throwing a military vehicle 20m (65ft) into the air and injuring the soldier, said Israeli military spokeswoman Lt Col Avital Leibovich.

The tunnel was one of the biggest seen in recent years, she said, and could have been part of a plan to kidnap or kill soldiers.

Hamas’ military wing, the Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades, said it caused the blast, in response to the killing of the boy.

Children injured after second Israeli airstrike on Gaza

TEMPLATE REPORT

Several children have been injured after Israeli forces shelled areas east of Khan Younis. The Israeli military said it had targeted two members of “global jihadist” groups which were suspected of involvement in a cross-border attack from Egypt in June that left one Israeli dead.

Medical sources in Gaza said an Israeli shell had landed east of Khan Younis, injuring five people, among them several children.

Earlier today, rockets launched from Gaza landed in Israel’s Eshkol region and near Kerem Shalom, although  no-one was hurt.

Shrapnel from the mortars and rockets fired into southern Israel on Monday caused some damage to at least one building in Eshkol.

Afterwards, the local authorities asked residents to stay close to shelters.

The military wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said the attack was a response to an Israeli air strike on Sunday.

Eight civilians, including two children, were injured in that strike, when a missile hit a motorbike ridden by two militants as it travelled through the southern town of Rafah.

One of the militants, Abdullah Maqawi, died of his wounds on Monday, while the other is seriously hurt.

Hamas’s military wing, the Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades, and that of Islamic Jihad, the al-Quds Brigades, announced that the rocket fire was a response to “Zionist crimes”.

“In response to the injury of civilians in the most recent strike on Rafah, the Qassam Brigades and the al-Quds Brigades fired a number of rockets at enemy military positions,” a Hamas statement said.

In a statement, the Israeli military said: “In response to this morning’s rocket barrage at southern Israeli communities, the [Israel Defence Forces] targeted Hamas terror activity sites and terrorist squads responsible for the rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.

“The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel. The Hamas terror organisation is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.”

More than 470 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel this year, not including those launched on Monday, the statement added.

GAZA – Two Palestinian brothers – aged seven and 10 –  have been injured after Israeli air strikes in Gaza.

The strikes were targeting tunnels used for smuggling between Gaza and Egypt.
Two other air strikes hit facilities used by Islamist militants.
They were a response to rocket attacks on Sunday which injured at least seven Israelis.
Last week, six Palestinians – who the Israelis said were preparing rocket and bomb attacks –  were killed in air strikes on Gaza.
