TEMPLATE ANALYSIS
The nuclear-armed rogue state of North Korea is up to its old tricks again – sabre-rattling against the South and as a consequence annoying the United States of America.
The young leader at Pyongyang appears to have been emboldened by a successful rocket launch and nuclear test, which began on December 12, with the launch of a rocket and the claim to have put a satellite into orbit. That was followed one-month later with an underground nuclear test.
Washington responded in March by flying B-52s over the South and then later stealth bombers.
On March 30, the North said it was at a state of war with the South and yesterday restarted the Yongbyon reactor.
Observers said things can’t be that bad as South Korean workers were still able to work at Kaesong. Today that is no longer the case.
North Korea needs to be taken seriously – it is capable of inflicting severe damage on the South and Japan. Of course, it can not take on the US, but then is Washington prepared for a confrontation with China?

TEMPLATE REPORT
The UN by Giant Savings” href=”#”>Security Council is meeting in emergency session to discuss the launch by North Korea of a long-range rocket.
A statement is expected to be issued within hours and western diplomats have said they would like this to be followed by a resolution in the coming days. However, the strength of any such resolution depends on China, which has expressed “regret” at North Korea’s action, but also urged restraint on any counter measures.
The Unha-3 rocket, launched at 09:49 local time (00:49 GMT), appears to have followed its planned trajectory, with stages falling in expected areas.
The news of the rocket launch was announced on state TV, with people in Pyongyang saying it gave them “great pride”
North Korea says a satellite has been placed in orbit; the US confirmed an object had been put into space.
US National Security Council spokesman, Tommy Vietor, said: “This action is yet another example of North Korea’s pattern of irresponsible behaviour. Given this current threat to regional security, the United States will strengthen and increase our close coordination with allies and partners.
“The international community must work in a concerted fashion to send North Korea a clear message that its violations of UN Security Council resolutions have consequences.”
The launch comes a week ahead of the South Korean presidential election and roughly a year after the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, on 17 December 2011.
The three-stage rocket blasted off from a site on North Korea’s west coast.
“The launch of the second version of our Kwangmyongsong-3 [Unha-3] satellite from the Sohae Space Centre… on December 12 was successful,” state news agency KCNA said. “The satellite has entered the orbit as planned.”
The rocket had been scheduled to pass between the Korean peninsula and China, with a second stage coming down off the Philippines.
China’s Xinhua news agency published a commentary a few hours after the launch and defended North Korea’s “right to conduct peaceful exploration” of outer space.

And so, much to the delight of his enemies, the Great Leader has died. Those enemies – namely the Western nations – are hailing this as a step forward, a new opportunity, and already Japan and South Korea have promised to work together in solving the problem of the north.
The modern history of this reclusive state is born of two events, namely the Korean war and the war on terror.
Both were a result of Great Power interference.
The first was sparked by a north attempting to reunite a nation that had been carved up by imperial Japan. In the process, she drew the fury of the new master of the Pacific, the United States of America.
When there was nothing else to bomb the Americans destroyed bridges in an effort to bring this stubborn little nation of Asians to their knees.
Eventually, the frontier that we now recognise was marked out – at huge human cost.
And the second event was that speech by George Bush after those terrorist outrages, where he spoke of an axis of evil – Iraq, Iran and north Korea.
A year before, the north was in talks abouth reuniting with the south, and western diplomats found themselves very welcome, as this reclusive state – perhaps encouraged by China – had begun the process of opening up.
Unlike Libya and Iraq, North Korea never gave up her weapons programme, instead she testfired a nuclear bomb as a warning to anyone who may think of invading her yet again.
North Korea may be mad and many other things, but she can say that at the time of the death of the Great Leader, she and her people had maintained their independence.
Can the same thing be said of Japan and South Korea?
