Euro 2012, Spain 1 Italy 1

BREAKING NEWS

Gdansk, Group C

Spain showed plenty of life in the first half, though the best chances went to an Italian team who for once did not sit back and allow their more fluent rivals to take over. This Spanish team are World and European champions, and anyone who thought that they may have lost the hunger to succeed or were too tired after a hectic domestic season were proved wrong, although they did not make good use of the possession that they enjoyed with the best two chances of the first half going to the Italians. That state of affairs quickly changed in the early minutes of the second with an attacking Spain getting three clear opportunities, although the mercurial Mario Balotelli failed to make the best chance of the match count when he decided to take his time after getting the better of Sergio Ramos.

Within three minutes of being replaced by Antonio Di Natalie, Italy finally put one past a Spanish team who at that moment appeared to lack bite.

Of course, we are talking about Spain here and within 3 minutes of that goal Cesc Fabregas put the European Champions back in business.

Spain continued to threaten from now onwards and with fifteen minutes to go, Fernando Torres who had just come on as a substitute failed to convert a break after being tackled by the Italian goalkeeper. Gianluigi Buffon.

Italy had another clear chance which went begging, although Spain would have felt robbed had that gone in given the amount of possession and the creativity their players enjoyed which was highlighted by a second Torres chance which was this time beautifully lofted over the bar.

If Italy figured during this time, it was because the Spanish were too busy attacking to watch their back.

At the end, the fact that they did not walk away with a win had less to do with Italy and more to do with the fact that Spain have not yet hit full gear.

Euro 2012, Germany 1 Portugal 0

BREAKING NEWS

Lviv, Group B

After a first half where Portugal were clearly content to allow their exciting opponents to attack in the hope of lofting one to Christiano Ronaldo on the break, the hope was that someone would break the deadlock in the second.

For the first fifteen minutes, Portugal showed more adventure and showed that this German team are not comfortable when they on the back foot and on the receiving end.

For along while though it appeared that this highly anticipated game between two European giants was never really going to live up to the billing, until Mario Gomez headed in a Muller cross in the seventy-second minute to put the Germans ahead and for a brief few minutes it appeared that the game had come alive.

Germany continued to press with Gomez failing to toe in another Muller cross two minutes later.

Portugal came within a whisker of scoring in the closing minutes, however they did not deserve to win this game, for they have played this style of football for too long now and it hasn’t really brought them accolades from their fans or any silverware either.

All that is of course a huge shame for the player fated as one of the best on the planet but who has still to prove himself on the international stage.

As for Germany they still excite, however their opponents will feel that they are beatable, something that seemed impossible during the World Cup when this young German side first exploded onto the scene.

America had “run out of patience” with Pakistan, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said during an unscheduled visit to Afghanistan.

The Pentagon Chief was speaking to troops gathered at the airport in Kabul. The comments brought to an end Panetta’s week-long trip to Asia  during which he explained the new US military strategy, which calls for a shift in strategic focus to the Asia-Pacific region.

“We are reaching the limits of our patience here, ” Panetta said.

“It is difficult to achieve peace in Afghanistan as long as there is safe haven for terrorists in Pakistan.

“It is very important for Pakistan to take steps. It is an increasing concern, the issue of safe haven.”

“..we have every responsibility to defend ourselves and… we’ve got to put pressure on Pakistan to take them on as well”.

BREAKING NEWS

Stunning Danny Welbeck goal in 38th minute of first half, the highlight of an otherwise forgettable final Euro warm-up game against a Belgium side that won’t be at this summer’s tournament.

Once again, England were well drilled, work-man like with occasional surges that looked threatening as shown by Jermaine Dafoe who in the 80th minute hit the post, and then the side netting in the 90th.

Belgium did threaten at the end, but were clearly going threw the motions in a game that was really a warm-up for England who will face France on June 11.

As Roy Hodgson gets more confident and settled in his role, the approach he has taken to this side will hold them in good stead in Euro 2012 where they will confound their doubters and do well.

Bangladesh, where Democracy fails the People

Bangladesh, Distant Echoes, India, Islam, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Pakistan, Politics 💼 🗳 🪖, Template News

ANALYSIS

A democracy where the heads of the two main opposition parties are women, should be an excellent springboard for any modern state and an excellent showcase for the world. Trouble is, this is Bangladesh one of the poorest countries on earth, whose 170m people are going have to endure another round of political infighting between the daughter of a former president and the widow of another.

Even by South Asian standards – remember Bangladesh is neighbours with India and was once east Pakistan – the power games between Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami party and the current prime minister, and Khaleda Zia, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have been stupid and dangerous. Here is a country where democracy has not been able to deliver anything concrete to the man on the street, whilst the elected leaders of the two main parties have spent most of their time in office trying to score points off each other.

Perhaps the best example of this, is the war crimes tribunal which was set up to investigate atrocities in the 1971 civil war and which is looking like an attempt to discredit the BNP and her Islamist allies.

Awful things were committed during that conflict and after in revenge, trouble is no one seems to be interested in what happened after when Indian trained militias savagely punished anyone that had supported Pakistan.

On top of this, the Awami League has targetted a Nobel laureate who pioneered Microfinance and created the Grameen Bank, Mohammad Yunus. His crime appears to be that he dared to set up a “third force” in Bangladesh politics.

Today, Bangladesh which fought to be free of one master is the only country on the subcontinent to accept India as the region’s superpower, something that the smaller – in terms of population – war ravaged Sri Lanka has not done to this day.

And domestically, the country which was once the breadbasket of Pakistan, sees street protests, disappearances and murders of opposition leaders.

All the while,  ordinary Bengalis who struggle with food and fuel price rises, chronic power cuts and still no new roads  are contributing through the textile industry to an economy with 6 per cent growth with the promise of a healthy middle class in the near future.

So, with a general election eighteen months away, one has to wonder what exactly would be gained from such an enterprise at this moment, when the country’s politicians seem so distracted from the real issues.

How to Repair Pakistan – US Relations (Change the President) 🇵🇰 – 🇺🇸

ANALYSIS

If, as appears likely, Mitt Romney will defeat the current incumbent at the White House in November’s Presidential election, one country will look forward to the eviction of Barack Obama – namely that of Pakistan.

From the outset, even before he was elected, Obama spoke of bombing PAKIStan and true to his word, drone strikes, which will surely be remembered in the same way as GITMO was for George Bush, have marked this Presidency – the last one on Wednesday in the so-called tribal belt killing three people.

And then there was the Nato strike which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, for which Isaf has still not apologised, and which even to the most impartial of observers looked like an act of war, a pre-emptive strike.

At Chicago, the President of Pakistan, who is hated within his own country for being an American ‘puppet’ demanded that the US pay £3, 200 for every Nato lorry that will pass through Pakistan, if she was to reopen a border crossing closed after that fatal incident involving 24 Pakistani soldiers.

And today comes the first confirmation – if not official – that the Americans got their man with the jailing of the doctor who helped the CIA find Osama bin Laden.

Shakil Afridi who had charged with treason and for running a fake vaccination programme was jailed for 30 years in Khyber district.

The raid which was celebrated in the US angered the Pakistanis, who claimed that it was a further violation of their nation’s sovereignty.

So if indeed, a Republican is heading for the CEO’s job at Washington, then the people of Pakistan will be the first to be out on the streets to celebrate.

Gr-exit (or what to do with Greece)

ANALYSIS

You know that there’s a problem when reporters are asking any Greek citizen that appears on television how the next generation intends to behave, will they have learned that you can’t get something for nothing.

You know that there’s a problem when reporters point out that Greek doctors who are known to earn in excess of a million euros, file tax returns claiming that they earn just 14, 000 a year.

Here is a corrupt country blocking the arteries of Europe.

And you know that there’s a problem when another nation’s PM, namely our own David Cameron, frustrated at how Greek politicians have failed to form a government or to indicate whether they intend to implement the next round of austerity cuts to this already austerity battered country, warns Athens  that there are plans for a Greek exit out of the Eurozone.

But how realistic is such a prospect, how would any one have confidence in the Euro again, especially with Italy, Spain and Portugal all  suffering under the weight of debt – and lets not forget Ireland either.

To remove Greece would be a spectacular own goal, that would make the fall of Lehman Brothers look inspired.

For to remove Greece would be hari-kari – Europe may never recover its position in the world, a world where Asia is still potentially the future economic powerhouse.

If the fall of Lehman’s signalled the beginning end of New York as the economic capital of the world, then the exit of Greece will only serve to confirm the end of Europe with its capitals of Paris, Berlin and London.

No one will be able escape the consequences, no one that is who is from the West.

So what to do with Greece – it will have to remain, as a second tier Balkan state which is what was when it was admitted into the Euro on the advice of Goldman Sachs.

And what will that mean- that that nation’s sovereignty will suffer in the same way that the Ottomans had when they were declared bankrupt and were then forced to accept British and French bankers who monitored every aspect of their economy, granting loans on conditions.

In this case, of course those bankers will be German and will hopefully do a better job of curbing corruption and tax avoidance than their Anglo-Saxon cousins who were at the time meant to be helping the Sultan and his office of the Sublime Porte, but who were in reality further undermining the economic foundations of a genuinely multi-ethnic, multi-religious state.

This is Chelsea’s Moment

TEMPLATE COMMENTARY

Nothing about Roberto Di Matteo’s side and how it has managed to get into the Champions League final to meet Bayern Munich has been convincing.

Not the performances, which include a very fortunate defeat of a Barcelona side whose manager was clearly tired of looking at the endless stream of silverware coming his way.

Nor the appearance of his players whose best days are clearly behind them –  that includes the once great Drogba as well those players that have for some reason made it into the England squad for the summer’s European Championships.

So, it would take a brave man to bet against a German side that boasts  amongst others, the latest Dutch superstar, one Arjen Robben in its ranks.

But Chelsea, have got a momentum, similar to the way Liverpool and Manchester United before them had going for them.

Call it the ‘It’ factor, call it what you like – they have team spirit that will mean they will overcome this Bayern Munich side in Munich to become European Club Champions.

The performance will not please their billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, however that will be an argument for another day – for this is Chelsea’s moment.
