TEMPLATE REPORT

Exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky has been found dead at his home in Surrey.

The circumstances of the death of Mr Berezovsky – a wanted man in Russia, and an opponent of President Vladimir Putin – are not yet known.

He was a former Kremlin power-broker whose fortunes had declined under Mr Putin. Berezovsky emigrated to the UK in 2000.

Last year, he lost a ยฃ3bn ($4.7bn) damages claim against Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

Mr Berezovsky claimed he had been intimidated by Mr Abramovich into selling shares in Russian oil giant Sibneft for a “fraction of their true worth”.

The allegations were completely rejected by the London Commercial Court judge, who called Mr Berozovsky an “inherently unreliable” witness.

david-cameronTEMPLATE ANALYSIS

When David Cameron appeared before the party faithful many moons ago, he promised to deliver them to government – all they had to do was trust him and make him leader of the party.

Today, with talk of a plot being hatched by Theresa May and Phillip Hammond, after a poor by-election showing at Eastleigh, all of which coming on top of the devastating indictment of how his chancellor has handled the economy, Cameron’s position as leader of his party is looking increasingly untenable.

Indeed, today’s appearance before the ballot box at Prime Minister’s Question Time reminded one observer of the dying days of the Gordon Brown government.

The opposition fired salvos to the increasing frustration and annoyance of the ย once so self-assured and even cocky Prime Minister.

Truth is Cameron was on shaky ground from the moment the results of the 2010 election announced and he had not delivered the resounding victory that he and his media friends has promised and expected to the very faithful he had so memorably spoken to on the day of the contest for the leader of the opposition.

Trouble is he may have also have done the Conservative Party long-term damage – for they were not popular before they got into Downing Street and certainly are not now, given the speed at which they set about putting this country through the toughest cuts since age of Thatcher.

’46 dead’ as protests over Bangladesh war crimes verdict reach a third day

TEMPLATE REPORT

Three people have been killed in Bangladesh after demonstrators protesting against the death sentence on an Islamist party leader clashed with police for a third day running.

Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was sentenced on Thursday on charges including murder, rape and torture during the war of independence in 1971.

Since then, at least 46 people have died in riots across the country.

Mr Sayeedi’s Jamaat-e-Islami party says the tribunal is politically motivated.

Mr Sayeedi is the third defendant to be convicted by the tribunal, which was set up in 2010 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government to deal with those accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces who attempted to stop East Pakistan (as Bangladesh was then) from becoming an independent country.

Earlier this month, another Jamaat leader, Abdul Kader Mullah, was sentenced to life for crimes against humanity.

In January, former party leader Abul Kalam Azad was found guilty in absentia of eight charges of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death.

The tribunal is trying a total of nine Jamaat leaders and two members of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Human rights groups have said the tribunal falls short of international standards.

Jamaat is an ally of the BNP, which is led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Ms Zia says the war crimes trials are politically motivated to target the opposition. The government has denied the allegation.

Jamaat and Ms Zia’s party have called for a three-day nationwide general strike starting Sunday.

French Troops fighting Islamists in Mali

TEMPLATE REPORT

French troops are taking part in operations against Islamists in northern Mali, Francois Hollande has confirmed.

“Mali is facing an assault by terrorist elements coming from the north whose brutality and fanaticism is known across the world,” the French president said. He said Mali’s existence as a state was under threat, and referred to the need to protect its own population and 6,000 French citizens living there. France ruled Mali as a colony until 1960.

The French President said the intervention complied with international law, and had been agreed with Malian President Dioncoundaย Traore. A state of emergency has been declared across the country.

Mr Traore used a televised by Giant Savings” href=”#”>address on Friday to call on Malians to unite to “free every inch” of the country.

He said he was to by Giant Savings” href=”#”>launch a “powerful and massive riposte against our enemies” after he “called for and obtained France’s air support within the framework of the international legality”.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the aim of the operation was to stop Islamist militants advancing any further.

“We need to stop the terrorists’ breakthrough, otherwise the whole of Mali will fall into their hands threatening all of Africa, and even Europe,”

The UN had previously approved plans to send some 3,000 African troops to Mali to recapture the north if no political solution could be found, but that intervention was not expected to happen until September.

Late on Thursday, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called for the rapid deployment of an African-led force.

The EU also said it would support the rapid deployment of an African-led mission and speed up preparations for a military training mission

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Anyone who looks at the map of the Middle East, can not fail to notice the size of the land of the people of Israel. And whats more, she is wedged between the West Bank and Gaza, landย like that of East Jerusalem, which is technicallyย Palestinian.ย So,ย when Israel speaks of being threatenedย and surrounded by hostile neighbours, she does have a point. However,ย since the six-day war of 1967, she has been winning wars, and has been backed politically, economically and of course militarily by a Superpower that has alwaysย regarded her as special case.

The latest Gaza war and the obvious powerlessness of any of the Arab nations, including Turkey and Iran, to muster any kind of military response has meant thatย she remains the preeminent power in the region.

Yet, policy makers in Tel Aviv are going to have to face reality – they can not continue to behave inย an appalling way towards the Palestinians, who remain the people without aย land living onย a land from which they wer displaced.

The astonishing thing about the Palestinians, according to those who meet them, is how little malice they actually hold towards Israel, considering how much they have suffered and had to endure since the proclamation of the Jewish state on May 14, 1948.

Even now, Israel’s leaders have anย opportunity to solve the Palestinian Question.

It could start with a viable Palestinian state inย Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem with the long-term view to breaking down the borders to create aย single whole Israel-Palestine whereย Jews, Muslims and Christians co-exist in the much the same as they have for centuries.

Of course, the extremists will oppose it, and unfortunately the ones who live inย and control Israel’s political system are less accommodating than are Hamas.

TEMPLATE REPORT

At leastย 100 people have died in the Gaza Strip in six days of violence, Hamas officials say.

Monday’s fatalities include a commander of the Islamic Jihad militant group.

More than 500 Palestinians have been injured.

Three Israelis have died since Wednesday.

The Israeli Defence Force hasย attacked more than 1,350 targets in the Gaza Strip since the start of Operation Pillar of Defense, while more than 1,000 rocketsย have beenย fired at Israel, according to figures published in Hararetz.

Efforts to secure a ceasefire continue, with a senior Egyptian official saying there are “encouraging signs”.

Israel has presented conditions for a ceasefire, which include no hostile fire of any kind from Gaza and international efforts to prevent Hamas from rearming.

Turkish Prime Minister Recepย Tayyipย Erdogan has described Israel as a “terrorist state”, citing the “massacre of children” during its bombardments of Gaza.

Meanwhile,ย  CNN poll released todayย shows aย majority of Americans believe Israel’s military action in the Gaza Strip is justified.

The CNN/ORC International poll indicated that 57 percent of Americans support Israel’s offensive against Hamas, while 25 percent of U.S. citizens believe Israel’s attacks on Gaza are unjustified.
