Who will rebuild Libya?

20 Friday Jan 2012

RussiaToday broadcast a report yesterday in which they highlighted the unruly and undignified rush for contracts to rebuild a Libya, that was largely destroyed by Nato bombing.

Predictably the report says it’s the countries – Britain and France in particular –  that flattened large parts of Libya who are set to benefit, with Russia and China who had signed deals with the old regime of Colonel Gaddafi the ones to miss out.

Russia, said the report, did not figure highly in Gaddafi’s calculations when it came to awarding contracts.

China and Russia have not invaded anyone’s country, and have simply respected the sovereignty of all the nations that they have made business deals with.

Both say the UN Security Council resolution they supported  did not permit regime change in Libya.

And yet they are being punished – this is not international law.

Dehumanising the Enemy

Four young men laughing at each other’s jokes – could be a scene from any Saturday night, especially if they all had too much to drink.

Problem is this was no joke, the four marines were urinating on the bodies of three men, they called ‘Taliban’.

Predictably, yesterday’s video posting drew outrage with concerns about how the US could be seen in the Islamic World.

You can draw your own conclusions about that, however you may want to consider whether the actions of those four men is all that surprising.

The word ‘Taliban’ is used by soldiers in Afghanistan – and by many people over here – in the same way as you would talk of a pest that needs to be eradicated, in the same way also as the Lord’s name being taken in vain.

Hezbollah has also been used, as has Hamas, and as talk of war with Iran gets closer so will references to the stranglehold of that country’s clerical elite – the ‘mad mullahs’.

Go back further, and ‘Gaddafi’, ‘Saddam’ all received the same treatment – never mind the fact that many died fighting, if not for them, but for the nation that they led.

Both men were treated appalingly when they met their end.

And go back even further to the Vietnam and Korean Wars, and the carnage unleashed by aerial bombing was fine in the minds of the pilots because they were fighting the Vietcong, Communists, Gooks.

Go back further to Dresden, Hamburg, the wooden homes of Tokyo, the killing fields of the First World War.

Then, war was being waged against the Nazis, the Japs, and before them the German Guerilla.

As waging war becomes easier – modern drone strikes do not even need the conscience of a pilot – it is important to remember that the results are still as bloody and devastating to those we regard as the enemy.

War with Iran

ANALYSIS – The correspondent on Newsnight last night ended his analysisย of theย latest developmentย in the Iran,ย namely the assassination of another of her nuclear scientistsย asย he left work in Teheran, withย an admission that it is probably inevitable that there will be a war with Iran in some form, perhaps atย the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran would probably argue that the war had already begun a long time ago,ย beginning with George Bush’s speech and the slow trickle of attacks, including cyber terrorism and the continued violations of her sovereignty that the latest killing is.

Last week, the Iranian navy threatened to shut of the Strait of Hormuz in response to the latest round of US sponsored sanctions aimed at Iranian banks amongst others.

The threat was accompanied with a clear statement – that Iran was the undisputed power of the Gulf region.

If this will be lead to war then a war with China may be around in the not too distant future.

China – who received a visit from the US yesterday in an effort to get her to stop buying oil from Iran – has recently complained about America’s build up in Asia.

Will a war in the Strait of Hormuz be followed by war in the South China Sea?

Those who favour such actions may also want to take a look at a video that has been on played onย television screens today – namely of 4 soldiers urinating over three bodies.

War dehumanises all who take part in it, it is not glorious and its effects last forever.

Ed Miliband, Mitt Romney

Two names have emerged over the past week, both of whom oneย day hope to run their perspective countries – Ed Miliband and Mitt Romney.

On the surface, both appear to be poles apart, one the leader of the Labour Party, the other emerging as the leader of the Republicans.

Yet a closer look will reveal that in actual fact there is very little between them.

Last Saturday, Ed Miliband gave an interview with the The Guardian newspaper in which he attempted to silence those who have been asking questions about whether he is right man for the job.

Ed is a pleasant and appears to be refreshingly honest, which is what probably attracted the Labour faithful to him in the first place.

Atย a time when politicians are down there with journalists wouldn’t be beย great to have some one that isn’t the PR man that David Cameron is and Tony Blair was before him.

Nothing wrong with that logic – it was employed by Gordon Brown with – despite the avalanche thrown at him – some success.

Remember, the Conservatives had to form a coalition to get to number 10 – although, Gordon still hasn’t explained why he sold half the nation’s gold.

And Edย clearly commands the loyalty of people around him – not only did he make everyone of his rivals part of his inner circle, though his brother David declined, his shadow chancellor Ed Balls launched a staunch defence of his leader on Monday with words to the effect of we are sick of the PR machines.

The trouble with Ed at the moment is that unlike Gordon Brown, he doesn’t appear to stand for anything, he doesn’t appear to have had any life experience.

Unfortunately, ย never before have the words ‘professional politician’ been so apt and at the same time so redundant.

Of course, Ed can change all that by bringing in people to give him that harder edge – I for one hope he succeedsย because at the moment he is coming across as a poorer cousin to the theย name now emerging as the serious contender to the disapointment that is Barack Obama, namely that of the rich, very rich apparently, Mormon Mitt Romney.

The slick, well oiled PR machine that is Romney comes from that tradition of Presidents that run all the way back to Ronald Reegan – very smooth operators behind whom are a cabal of very determined and ideologically driven advisors.

Romney does not stand for anything real – he has picked issues, like Gay Rights, which will appeal to a certain type of voter however, he has not given any indication that he intends to alter the path that America is currently embarked on.

America has been let down by every leader since the Reagan era, none has attempted to address the massive social divide that still plagues the richest country on earth and that is a sore that may one day come back to hit everyone in the most unexpected way.

For the moment, Republicans regard Romney as a serious contender to Obama – although Newt Gringrich could be someone to break the mould, trouble is those who bring change, even revolutions, are rarely ever there to see them through to the end.

Whetherย America is ready for a mormon is of course open to debate.

There again, could anyoneย  honestly sayย that a ย black man would one day be the President of the United States of America.

The Soviet Union

22 Thursday Dec 2011

Cold War, Distant Echoes, Mikhail Gorbachev, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Politics ๐Ÿ’ผ ๐Ÿ—ณ ๐Ÿช–, Putin, Putin and Russia, Russia and the Soviet Union, Russia ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ, Soviet Union, Template News, USA ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, USSR, Vladimir Putin

With the twentieth anniversary of the collapse of the Soviet Union approaching, many have been offering their thoughts as to how this superpower met her end, how was it that on Christmas Day 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev appeared on television to tell his people that he had resigned as their president.

A British ambassador for Moscow, from 1988 to 1992, charted her decline from the 1960s, she was falling behindย to her rival and had to rely on high oil prices for the next 15 years, Rodric Braithwaite observed in the Financial Times.

Many Russians from that period would tell you that things weren’t as bad as the cold war propaganda showed, that the food queues broadcast in the West could easily have been replaced byย pictures of theย dole queues and people sleeping in the streets on Washington, London and Paris.

Over the last ten years, Islamists have argued that the defeat at Afghanistan was the beginning of the end of the empire that denied the existence of God.

For an empire built on fear, admitting defeat was a disaster, however, the Soviet Union’s decision to put 150,000 troops into Kabul was perhaps the first sign that something was wrongย at the Kremlin.

Gorbachev himself has been quoted as saying that he felt that things could not continue in the way that they had before he came to power.

I have always believed that the Soviet Union never recovered from the carnage of the Second World War, for on the face of it she wasย equally matched with the United States of America, truth was her position as number one had come at a horrendous cost, millions of young men had given their lives for the protection of mother Russia.

Whilst industries and infrastructures can be replaced, human beings despite whatย Cold War propaganda said of the Soviet worker,ย are not machines, theyย are just flesh and blood, and in that they are unique.
