Child Benefit, George Osborne

This Budget has made one huge mistake – perhaps not in financial terms, for the wealthiest can easily afford this cut, and definitely not politically for a country that is undergoing such a severeย recession willย welcome the rich losing a bit of money, but certainly morally.

All children born in this country are future citizens, and should thus be treated in the same way, irrespective of the wealth of their parents they are born into.

Child Benefit signalled – if only symbolically – that this country had a stake in everyย childย born, a principle which is no longer there.

(Child Benefit will be reduced incrementallyย when someone in a household earns more ยฃ50, 000 – and at ยฃ60, 000 it will be removed completely, source The Financial Times, 22-3-12)

Budget 2012, Osborne

George Osborne’s budget this week will not gain him any friends politically, however it may in the long-termย be remembered as the first indication from the Coalition government that this country is on its way back.

By cutting the top rate of tax of 50% to 45% – still a huge amount of money –ย the Chancellor has also signalled who he thinks will lead thatย recovery.

This nation had two things to sell to the world – one is running out in the North Sea and other has got absolute battering becauseย the economy isย more exposed than most to the banking sector, of which the City of London isย the driving force.

So, at a time when Nicolas Sarkozy is talking of introducingย a 75%ย  tax rate, the best way to attract the brightestย from the world of banking, accountancy and financeย over here is offer the most attractive rates.

Having said all this, they are also lucky to be here, something that they need to be made aware of asย this nation begins its still painful process of recovering from theย financial crisis of 2007.

Mohammed Merah, the gunman who killed seven people, is dead after a 32-hour siege at a flat in Toulouse.

He was shot by a police sniper as he tried to jump out of a bathroom window after commandos had stormed his flat.

Merah had carried out three separate attacks, killing four people at a Jewish school and three soldiers.

He had said he was acting to “avenge Palestinian children” and protest against French military interventions overseas.

The 23-year-old who was reported to have received al-Qaeda training, opened fire on police commandos after they stormed into his flat at 9:30 this morning. (GMT)

Prosecutors said he was shot in the head as he tried to flee.

In a news conference, Prosecutor Francois Molins said a police marksman had killed Merah as he tried to jump out of the bathroom window.

๐Ÿ“บ How the 1980 Iranian Embassy Siege Changed my life as an ITN News Producer ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท

TEMPLATE EXCLUSIVE

Stewart Purvis was a news producer at ITN when the SAS were about toย storm the Iranian embassy. He explains the decisions he took that resulted in those iconic pictures being broadcast onย British television and how they changed his life. Watch it here

Background

The Iranian Embassy siege took place from 30 April to 5 May 1980, after a group of six armed men stormed the Iranian embassy in South Kensington, London.

The gunmen took 26 people hostageโ€”mostly embassy staff, but several visitors and a police officer, who had been guarding the embassy, were also held. The hostage-takers, members of a group campaigning for the autonomy of Iran’s Khลซzestฤn Province, demanded the release of Arab prisoners from jails in Khลซzestฤn and their own safe passage out of the United Kingdom. The British government quickly resolved that safe passage would not be granted, and a siege ensued. Over the following days, police negotiators secured the release of five hostages in exchange for minor concessions, such as the broadcasting of the hostage-takers’ demands on British television.

By the sixth day of the siege the gunmen had become increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress in meeting their demands. That evening, they killed one of the hostages and threw his body out of the embassy. As a result, the British government ordered the Special Air Service (SAS), a special forces regiment of the British Army, to conduct an assault to rescue the remaining hostages. Shortly afterwards, soldiers abseiled from the roof of the building and forced entry through the windows. During the 17-minute raid, the SAS rescued all but one of the remaining hostages, and killed five of the six terrorists.

LONDON – Press TV could be back on the UK airwaves, Professor Stewart Purvis who was on the OFCOM board that made the decision to take the Iranian-owned broadcaster off air said today in an exclusive Template interview.

Prof Purvisย saidย Press TV had not been able to meet European standards and regulations, highlighting the interviewย broadcastย with a man who later said he had been under duress from the Iranian authorities asย an example of this.

He did not however rule out a time when OFCOM andย Press TV could meet and iron outย the problems, that mean thatย viewers can onlyย see the channelย on the deregulated web.

Cameron’s Adventure into Nigeria

Locator map of Nigeria
ANALYSIS
ย
Italy has said that it was ‘inexplicable’ that the UK had not informedย them of theย decision to send in British special forces to rescueย two hostages – one British, the other Italian – ย heldย in Nigeria.
ย
The failed rescue bid resulted in the deaths of Chris McManus, 28, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, and Franco Lamolinara.
The operation which was conducted jointly by British Special forces and Nigerian military comes at a time when media reports here are referring to a growing insurgency in the north which is being blamed on a group called Bokuย Haram, which it is said has links to Alย Qaeda.
ย
Whether the gun men have anything to do with all of that has yet to be proved, however you can establish a number of facts about Nigeria and whatย may be driving any trouble – the north which is mainly Christian has a monopoly of the oil which the government of GoodLuck Jonathan has not shared equally with the South.
ย
What’s more oil companies – which are Western – have cut deals that are too generous to them.
ย
And of course there is our Prime Minister – the Tony Blair clone – who having got a taste for colonial glory in Libya has followed in his predecessor’s footsteps by an adventure into Nigeria.
ย
Unlike the one into Sierra Leone however, this one has failed and those who continue to question David Cameron’s judgment on the international stage have been left wondering what he’s going to do next.

If the television pictures are to be believed Britain is burning.

A post 9/11 generation aware of the power of the media image have attacked their townโ€™s iconic buildings setting them alight.

Trouble began in Tottenhamโ€™s Broadwater Farm Estate when a young Black man was shot dead by police.

When the dead manโ€™s family approached their local police station to get some answers โ€“ amazingly the police had not spoken to them -a young girl was alleged to have pushed aside and then suddenly there was a night of looting.

The police did not overact โ€“ that was the one thing they have got right in this very sorry saga. Small scale rioting โ€“ awful for the people trapped in this โ€“ followed in some of the poorest boroughs of London, and has touched Liverpool and Birmingham also.

The police will get criticism for everything โ€“ but they should haveโ€ฆ

Polarising figure no more?

An eighty-year-old man appeared before a parliamentary committee earlier today to answer questions about how the organistation that he ran had managed to hack into the phones of so many people, including that of the dead schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

No he was not to blame, he said, he had been let down by the people he had trusted.

And he was very, very sorry for the harm that had been caused.

This was, he said, the worst day of his life.

As you watched this giant of the media world being humbled by a parliamentary process of country that was not of his birth, somehow you were aware that you would never look Rupert Murdoch in the same way ever again. Great Power is only great when it is behind in the shadows, when it is exposed to the sunlight it can wilt, that was theโ€ฆ
