BREAKING NEWS
REPORT – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has signed the Rome Treaty and 19 other international agreements which now paves the way for the Palestinians to pursue war crimes against Israel, whose 50-day Gaza campaign cost more than 2,100 lives, at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Abbas made good on his threat to join the ICC after the defeat of the Palestinian resolution calling on the complete withdrawal of Israel from the occupied territories by 2017 at the UN Security Council last night. The ratification of the Rome Treaty is the first step to joining the ICC. It also means the Palestinians have opened a new chapter in their relationship with Israel and its Superpower patron, the USA.

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS
It is usual to refer to the leader of the most powerful country in the world as a lame duck as he approaches the last two years of his elected presidential term. That of course implies that he is simply form filling and entertaining heads of state. President Obama’s moves in the last two weeks are showing that this doesn’t have to be the case.
The much opposed CIA torture report which brought into the open what most people have claimed and suspected – namely that intelligence service broke all rules and gained nothing as a result, even the much heralded information leading to the assassination of Osama bin Laden had nothing to do with Rendition, Torture and Interrogation methods.
And last week came the highly unexpected announcement that there would be a change in the long-standing and very stupid dispute with Cuba, a small defenceless Caribbean island that dared to overthrow a Washington friendly regime and nationalise the country’s resources.
Both moves are bold and face the ignominy of being first ignored and second overturned by a future Republican led government. But that would be a mistake for the Obama administration is clearly signalling that there is a change in the way the US is going to deal with other nations. For the US is no longer the world’s sole superpower – technically there are two, the US and China, who the IMF recently referred as the world’s leading economy in terms of output from goods and services. That is something no future President can ignore and could even be a positive thing if America alters the way it treats weaker nations, and takes a leaf from China who has never attempted to bully or influence any country even North Korea who Washington is currently accusing of hacking a film owned by Sony.

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS
Liverpool’s failure to make it through to the next stage of the Champions League following a long absence has opened a post mortem with Brendan Rodgers calling for more star players – unfortunately Raheem Stirling who is reported to be unhappy with a Β£70,000 a week contract is not the answer to the hole left by Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona. Not even Mario Balotelli has been able to make up for the Uruguayan whose skill was matched by an extraordinary work rate that was in evidence in his last game against English opponents, namely England in this year’s world cup. Liverpool’s last two games – first against Real Madrid and then the draw with Basel all point to an improved performance next time should they qualify. Of the English teams that are into the knockout stages this year Manchester City will want to prove that this is their year – they are on an outstanding run ever since victory over Bayern Munich, but will feel the loss of Sergio Aguero when looking for the type of inspiration a Champions League team needs to secure the title. Arsenal have made the last 16 through out under fire Arsene Wenger’s term as manager although their silky play still suffers from the need of a firm player at the front and at the back. That leaves Chelsea who made it into the semis last year despite fielding an ageing side and who this year beefed up with fresh signings that have secured JosΓ© Mourino’s side a place at the top of the Premier League table will feel they can win. But they like their opponents that include the usual suspects – Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich – are all beatable. That means the European Champions League is this year the most open for many years and at present too close to call.
