Mitt Romney and the Polls

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

On first appearance, Mitt Romney appears to be the perfect foil for the current President of the United States of America.

What he lacks in charisma, he more than makes up forย with clear businessย sense – you only have to look at his ideas for making the US a self-sufficient oil producer by 2020 to realise that.

Yet, if the polls are to be believed he trails behind when Americans are asked who they would vote for.

And perhaps more worryingly there’s a huge gulf between him and the man on the street when it comesย whether he is easy-going and likeable.

That’s of course, something the slick Obama campaign has seized on.

This election campaign promises to be the dirtiest so far.

So, with that in mind what are we to make of his choice of running mate – Paul Ryan, someone who is proposing ruthless cuts to Medicare, and of course to plans to cut tax rates for the richest from 35% to 28.

And what are we also to make of his choice of advisers, some known as zealots and others moderates.

Of course, there is little to choose between the two when it comes to Foreign Policy, both men will coldly follow their national interest.

And yet on the crucial pillar of the economy, Rommeyย scores high, he is someone who gives the impression that he has his own mind and will listen to everyone. The final decision though is his.

That is in stark contrast to the present incumbent who like everyone all the way back to Ronald Reaganย – and including the much hyped Bill Clinton – have been little more than figure heads behind whom are very powerful advisors representing very powerful interests.

America and her still powerful economy needs someoneย with fresh ideas.

Trouble is those ideas may not be very popular.

Samsung ‘ripped off’ Apple’s software in creating its own iPhone and iPad

Samsungย has been orderedย to pay Apple $1.05bn (ยฃ665m) in damages for infringing intellectual property.
Aย jury in Americaย decided several Samsung devices had copiedย iPhone-maker Apple’s software and design patents.
Samsung had claimed that Apple had also copied its own software and design patents.
The year-long case at an American courtย comes in the wake ofย recent rulings in South Korea where a court ruled that both technology firms had copied each other, andย at aย British courtย  which threw out claims byย Apple that Samsung had infringed its copyright.

Samsung promised to appeal against the decision describing it as “a loss for the American consumer”.

“It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices,” the South Korean firm said.

The statement added that it was “unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners”.

Apple, however, said it applauded the court “for finding Samsung’s behaviour wilful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn’t right”.

Apple said it intended to seek sales injunctions at a follow-up hearing on 20 September

The two firms account for more than half of global smartphone and tablet computer sales.

The nine-person jury at the federal court in San Jose, California had to consider 700 questions about each side’s claim that its rival had infringed its intellectual property.

It deliberated for less than three days before coming to a unanimous decision, rejecting all of Samsung’s claims and upholding five of Apple’s allegations, including:

  • Some of Samsung’s handsets, including its Galaxy S 4G model, infringed Apple’s design patents for the look of its iPhone including the system it uses to display text and icons
  • All the disputed Samsung devices had copied Apple’s “bounce-back response”, which makes lists jump back as if yanked by a rubber band
  • Several Samsung devices incorporated Apple’s facility allowing users to zoom into text with a tap of a finger

Apple had wanted $2.5bn in damages. Samsung had sought $519m.

An insurgent rocket attack on a US air base in Afghanistan has damaged the plane of America’s top military officer.

Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff had arrved in the country following a spate of ‘green on blue’ kiilings.

He was not near the plane at the time.

However, two US maintenance crew were slightly injured.

The attack happened late on Monday night at the US air base in Bagram.

Gen Dempsey had arrived on Monday in a C-17 transport aircraft which was parked at Bagram.

Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, had met Nato commanders and officials for talks after the death of a Nato soldier on Sunday who was shot dead by an Afghan in a police uniform.

The soldier was the 10th US soldier to die in this way in two weeks.

Two American soldiers were killed in another incident on Friday.

And six were killed in a single day on 10 August.

Some 130,000 (“blue”) Nato troops are fighting insurgents in Afghanistan, alongside 350,000 (“green”) Afghans.

So far, 40 members of the  International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) personnel – most of the victims Americans – have been killed by members of the Afghan security forces this year.

There were 35 such deaths in all of 2011

A statement from Nato’s Isaf force said shrapnel from “an indirect fire round” had damaged the plane as well as a Nato helicopter.

The general was in his room at the time of the attack, according to officials.

Peter Thiel,ย  venture capitalist and Paypal co-founder who was one of Facebook’s early backers, cashed in 20.1 million shares, to raise $395.8m (ยฃ251m) last week.

Last week was the first time since Facebook’s float that early backers could cash in their shares.

The value of Facebook shares have fallen sharply since their debut two months ago.

Mr Thielย had already sold shares worth more than $640m during the flotation, taking his total profit to more than $1bn.

Last week, Facebook released 271.1 million shares as the first so-called “lock-up” stopping early investors and employees selling their shares expired.

Another 1.44 billion shares, owned by early investors and Facebook staff, are set to be freed up by the end of November as five additional lock-ups expire.

Tax Receipts, UK Borrowing, UK Economy

According to the Office for National Statistics,ย borrowing to cover the gap between spending and revenue was ยฃ600mย for July.

There was a surplus of ยฃ2.8bn in the same month a year earlier.

The Treasury blamedย disappointing corporation tax receipts for the shortfall.

The Office for Budget Responsibility, the official UK economic forecaster, said there was still “significant uncertainty” about the outlook for borrowing this year.

Four months into the financial year the government has borrowed ยฃ44.9bn, ยฃ9.3bn higher than the same period in 2011.

That excludes banking interventions and the one-off boost in April from a transfer of Royal Mail pension assets to the public sector.

The OBR had predicted that borrowing on the same measure would be ยฃ120m for the whole of the financial year, down from the ยฃ125m borrowed last year.
