UKRAINE, East – Those who have long warned of the threat to Europe that Russia posed will feel vindicated today. The rest of us who long for the idea of world peace can only saddened by the events unfolding on the diplomatic arena in response to Ukraine and other matters concerning Russia and its fiercely nationalistic leader Vladimir Putin. France and Germany are meeting leaders in Kiev and Moscow – surely an an admission by everyone about who the driving force behind events in eastern Ukraine really is – to end what François Hollande called the ‘war’ in Ukraine. Over five thousand lives later, not to mention unquantifiable amounts of suffering, and Europe is effectively suing for peace with Moscow – there is the threat of more advanced American weapons in the hands of Kiev, a bolstered NATO airforce in eastern Europe but whether that will move Putin from his position that the rebels who have been clearly attempting a land grap have won is unlikely. Anyone foolish enough to rearm Kiev will have to explain why the horrendous scenes that emerged in Grozny are now being replayed in Donetsk and Luhansk – if you don’t believe me just look at the apocalyptic images from the ruins of Donetsk airport. The best move has come from France who has already said that Ukraine should not be part of NATO – the question is why oh why did European leaders not say that in the first place?
