Ed Miliband, Mitt Romney

Two names have emerged over the past week, both of whom one day hope to run their perspective countries – Ed Miliband and Mitt Romney.

On the surface, both appear to be poles apart, one the leader of the Labour Party, the other emerging as the leader of the Republicans.

Yet a closer look will reveal that in actual fact there is very little between them.

Last Saturday, Ed Miliband gave an interview with the The Guardian newspaper in which he attempted to silence those who have been asking questions about whether he is right man for the job.

Ed is a pleasant and appears to be refreshingly honest, which is what probably attracted the Labour faithful to him in the first place.

At a time when politicians are down there with journalists wouldn’t be be great to have some one that isn’t the PR man that David Cameron is and Tony Blair was before him.

Nothing wrong with that logic – it was employed by Gordon Brown with – despite the avalanche thrown at him – some success.

Remember, the Conservatives had to form a coalition to get to number 10 – although, Gordon still hasn’t explained why he sold half the nation’s gold.

And Ed clearly commands the loyalty of people around him – not only did he make everyone of his rivals part of his inner circle, though his brother David declined, his shadow chancellor Ed Balls launched a staunch defence of his leader on Monday with words to the effect of we are sick of the PR machines.

The trouble with Ed at the moment is that unlike Gordon Brown, he doesn’t appear to stand for anything, he doesn’t appear to have had any life experience.

Unfortunately,  never before have the words ‘professional politician’ been so apt and at the same time so redundant.

Of course, Ed can change all that by bringing in people to give him that harder edge – I for one hope he succeeds because at the moment he is coming across as a poorer cousin to the the name now emerging as the serious contender to the disapointment that is Barack Obama, namely that of the rich, very rich apparently, Mormon Mitt Romney.

The slick, well oiled PR machine that is Romney comes from that tradition of Presidents that run all the way back to Ronald Reegan – very smooth operators behind whom are a cabal of very determined and ideologically driven advisors.

Romney does not stand for anything real – he has picked issues, like Gay Rights, which will appeal to a certain type of voter however, he has not given any indication that he intends to alter the path that America is currently embarked on.

America has been let down by every leader since the Reagan era, none has attempted to address the massive social divide that still plagues the richest country on earth and that is a sore that may one day come back to hit everyone in the most unexpected way.

For the moment, Republicans regard Romney as a serious contender to Obama – although Newt Gringrich could be someone to break the mould, trouble is those who bring change, even revolutions, are rarely ever there to see them through to the end.

Whether America is ready for a mormon is of course open to debate.

There again, could anyone  honestly say that a  black man would one day be the President of the United States of America.

FA Cup Third Round Manchester City 2 Manchester United 3

Yesterday’s FA Cup tie between the big Manchester clubs was a classic, the type of game that reminds you why football can be such a compelling sport, with echoes of that great encounter between Manchester United and Barcelona some thirteen years ago, something not lost on two of the players who played during that great Champions League semi and who were amazingly still present as players at the Etihad stadium – Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

This was not Brazil v Italy 1982, but it was stil very very good.

Seemingly finished by three goals by their bitter rivals, the last two after the referee had sent off Vincent Kompay in controversial circumstances, City retreated to the dressing room where manager Roberto Mancini showed why this team is currently sitting on the top of the Premier League.

A shift in tactics to make up for the missing player quickly saw results with a stunning free kick from Aleksander Kolarov – from now on the pressure came from City as they attempted to claw back another two goals.

That they failed to do so had more to do with bad luck than the superiority of a United side who despite this victory still looked a pale shadow of its former great self.

With more players committed to the back, the onus was on Sergio Auegro. After missing one clear chance, he did not disappoint again.

With the second in the bag, City kept on trying.

Another Kolarov freekick was struck at the goalkeeper, although United’s Anders Lindegaard did not know much about it.

In the dying seconds, even City’s keeper Costel Pantilimon who had virtually nothing to do in the second half, was attacking in one last desperate attempt to get that goal that would do for the FA Cup holders.

Had City shown the same passion in the first half – perhaps they would not have lost, but there again we would not have seen one of the great counter attacks in recent times.

United won – perhaps avenging the 6-1 League drubbing at Old Trafford – but Alex Ferguson now knows that City have gelled into a team that can no longer be regarded as a poor rival.

Some people are saying that the games between these two big Manchester Clubs are beginning the el classico encounters between Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

If that is the case, then the emergence of Mancini’s City may yet be the biggest challenge facing the United boss.

Diane Abbott and that ‘Racist’ Tweet

COMMENTARY

When I saw Diane Abbott on Newsnight, I knew she was annoyed.

Martin Basher spoke like a press officer for the Met when he declared words to the effect of credit where credit’s due.

It had taken 18 years for two of a possible six to get something like a sentence for what they did.

The police had not investigated this case properly because they did not value the life of another human being.

Yet Mr Basher, Bashir if you like, did not seem to show any understanding of this – in fact, he seemed to qualify his remarks with I came up close and personal with the attackers myself.

Well good for you, aren’t you the clever one.

Basher, like others from the race relations industry, have done nothing to change this country’s still questionable position and attitude towards people they regard as ‘Other.’

However, they certainly have done well out of it – you know Basher’s part of the NBC staff now.

Diane Abbott is refreshingly honest about everything, which is why she never progressed in the same way as say another left winger had during Tony Blair.

When I asked Diane why she hadn’t compromised a little like that person in question, she told me ‘I can sleep easy at night’.

When Tony Blair took this country to war against Iraq, that particular person resigned, despite all the compliments they were getting regarding the importance of their work.

Diane Abbott is not racist and she certainly wasn’t saying all ‘white’ people are either, however ask anyone of another colour and they will tell that they have suffered from divide and rule at some stage, as well as other things like projection, just to teach them a lesson for thinking they are special.

I wish it wasn’t true, but it is.

If we are going to trust politicians ever in this country, then they need to be allowed to be human beings, which also means cutting them some slack, otherwise we will always end up with robots like Tony Blair and David Cameron.

ANALYSIS – The Metropolitan Police Service did not do their job properly –    they failed to act because they did NOT take the murder of a black teenager seriously. In short, they were racist.
One only has to listen to the pain in Doreen Lawrence’s words to understand that.
She also made the point that racist attacks are still occuring today and that police should not use her son’s case as an excuse to move on.
One of the killers had actually attacked a white teenager with a knife before going on to murder Stephen.
That does not mean that this case was not racially motivated.
We all know that this case would never have not got so far, had the middle market Daily Mail not taken its dramatic stand.
Question is – how many more ‘Stephen Lawrences’ are still out there?
