Raising that Debt Ceiling

US Deficit

The deadline of August 2 is fast approaching and US law makers have not decided whether they are going to raise the debt ceiling, that isΒ whether it is going to have borrow more to sustain its expenditures which include an extraordinary amount on military spending.

It is often remarked that the military takes up a smaller portion of the country’s GDP, and that the real problem lies with social security and medicare.

This may well be the case, however, what benefit does this spending bring to its people and to the people of the world? In the case of military spending, endless hardship and suffering and in the case of welfare, some respite to its citizens for whom there is no American dream.

No one seems to have factored this in to their cold calculations.

Afghanistan

The latest murder to be claimed by the Taliban has taken place in Kandahar. It came after the high profile shooting of the Afghan President’s half brother, who was the governor of Kandahar. This man was said to be rooting out corruption in the war strife country and was portrayed on BBC News as being someone who will be difficult to replace especially as the pool of available candidates is already near drought levels. The news report also carried an interview with America’s general in area who said that such actions were a sure sign of desperation on the part of the Taliban who had been clearly defeated.

This news story comes on the same day that Britain expelled eight Libyan diplomats and said that it recognised the Transnational National Council as the official representatives of the people of Libya. The story carried a handful of people outside the Libyan embassy applauding the decision and one man said that 99 per cent of Libyan people did not like Gaddafi.

When news reports – who ever carries them – take this clear line and tone then they are little more than propaganda, and what’s more depressing is that the impression left is one of a never ending cycle of violence. There has also been very little coverage of the cost on civilian lives Nato’s bombing campaigns are having.

Surely, the first place to start in covering any war is how it will affect ordinary people, whose lives are never going to be the same ever again because a higher power has decided that the best way to resolve a dispute is through war.

It’s the Economy Stupid!

Who’d have thought it!

This country’s GDP grew by 0.2 per cent in the second quarter of this year.

That was considerably less than the 0.7 per cent projected growth forecast.

A variety of factors were blamed for this contraction – the Royal wedding, wasn’t that supposed to bring in money, the weather, there may be a point here the weather has been very testing to everyone, etc. News reports have carried different points of view from the inexperienced Chancellor of the Exequer to the equally inexperienced leader of the opposition.

This country is still generating a trillion pounds a year, something that hasn’t changed.

That means George Osbourne has not done anything wrong there, where the danger lies is in his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this government – that will cause real long term damage.

Norway

Like a true coward, the mass murderer who brought carnage to the peace that is Norway gave himself up when confronted by a real army, one that could fight back.

These little Hitlers are legends in their own mind, the trouble is why doesn’t everyone else see what they know deep inside.

There is no need to know his name, just like there is no need to know the name of the man who harmed so many in London, almost a decade ago, the manΒ newspapersΒ called the nail bomber.

Like the man who shot John Lennon, they crave glory and it’s crucial ingredient, the oxygen that is publicity.

The Norwegian authorities got it right by denying this man a platform to voice his horrendous views.

Trouble is what can they do with him?

We live at a time when the words, talent and genius are so often used that they have lost their meaning.

Amy Winehouse was undeniably talented, the tragedy is that she did not stay around long enough to become a genius.

At 27 – what is it about that age, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and perhaps Ms Winehouse’s closest life style contemporary Janis Joplin – she was able to sell records world wide, she was a superstar, there was no need for any hype or heavy promotion her voice simply propelled in to that league.

How many people can we say that of today?

Talented people never know they are talented and as Ms Winehouse showed they can be extremely self destructive.

No one – but themselves – can stop them from harming themselves.

For that to happen, they need to accept that there is a problem.

Sadly, this 27-year-old could do not this and the world has nowΒ lostΒ oneΒ shining star.

So the phone hacking saga has claimed its first victim with the death of Sean Hoare, the journalist who firstΒ  said that his editor, Andy Coulson, had known of phone hacking going on at the News of World.

Shades of Dr David Kelly – perhaps.

During my travels, I was lucky enough to meet Sean, and probably like everyone, did not have a bad thing to say about him, he was that kind of bloke – down to earth, always have time for you. I wasn’t a friend so I could tell what was troubling him, but I suspect that he was suffering from that emptiness that those of who work in newspapers have often felt.

The longer you let it fester, the harder it is to overcome.

There will be those hardened hacks who will dismiss this as nonsense, however, if they are reallly honest, they know what journalists like Sean and Christopher Morgan of The Sunday Times went through everyday.

Murdoch comes out of the Shadows

19 Tuesday Jul 2011

Polarising figure no more?

An eighty-year-old man appeared before a parliamentary committee earlier today to answer questions about how the organistation that he ran had managed to hack into the phones of so many people, including that of the dead schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

No he was not to blame, he said, he had been let down by the people he had trusted.

And he was very, very sorry for the harm that had been caused.

This was, he said, the worst day of his life.

As you watched this giant of the media world being humbled by a parliamentary process of country that was not of his birth, somehow you were aware that you would never look Rupert Murdoch in the same way ever again. Great Power is only great when it is behind in the shadows, when it is exposed to the sunlight it can wilt, that was the lesson that America had taken from the attacks on 9/11, namely that she had ceased to be a great power and in a sense she is still attempting to recover back that position to this day.

We may never look at Rupert Murdoch in the same way again, whether that is a bad thing remains to be seen.
