TEMPLATE REPORT

Ahmed Said Khalil al-Jabari, head of the military wing of  Hamas, has been killed during a series of Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip.

He and another senior Hamas official died when the car they were travelling in was hit in Gaza City.

Israeli Defence Force (IDF) spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich told BBC News “close to 20” sites in Gaza had been targeted in a “limited” operation, with the strikes aiming to destroy rocket-firing capabilities.

“The operation against Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other organisations has two goals: to protect Israeli civilians and target the terror capability of these organisations,” she added.

Militants in Gaza have fired more than 110 rockets towards southern Israel since Saturday, when four soldiers were wounded in an anti-tank missile attack on an Israeli army jeep. Before Wednesday’s operation, six Palestinians had been killed in the ensuing Israeli military strikes on the Gaza Strip in response.

Mr Jabari, who was 46, is the most senior Hamas official to be killed in the Gaza Strip since the major Israeli offensive four years ago.

Israel’s Shin Bet by Giant Savings” href=”#”>security service said he had been responsible for “all terrorist activities against Israel from Gaza” in the last decade.

“Jabari was responsible for by Giant Savings” href=”#”>financing and directing military operations and attacks against Israel. His elimination today is a message to Hamas officials in Gaza that if they continue promoting terrorism against Israel, they will be hurt.”

TEMPLATE REPORT

The boy named by Hamas was Yunes Abu Daqqa was hit by rounds fired by an Israeli army helicopter.  He was reportedly killed on Thursday when clashes  erupted after militants opened fire on Israeli forces that had entered Gaza.

“Terrorists opened fire at IDF [Israeli Defence Forces] soldiers while they were performing routine activity adjacent to the security fence,” Israel’s military spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said.

The AFP news agency quoted Hamas health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra as saying the boy, Yunes Abu Daqqa, “was killed by bullets fired from an Israeli helicopter during an incursion” in southern Gaza.

Soon after, a large tunnel blew up near the border fence, throwing a military vehicle 20m (65ft) into the air and injuring the soldier, said Israeli military spokeswoman Lt Col Avital Leibovich.

The tunnel was one of the biggest seen in recent years, she said, and could have been part of a plan to kidnap or kill soldiers.

Hamas’ military wing, the Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades, said it caused the blast, in response to the killing of the boy.

GAZA – Two Palestinian brothers – aged seven and 10 –  have been injured after Israeli air strikes in Gaza.

The strikes were targeting tunnels used for smuggling between Gaza and Egypt.
Two other air strikes hit facilities used by Islamist militants.
They were a response to rocket attacks on Sunday which injured at least seven Israelis.
Last week, six Palestinians – who the Israelis said were preparing rocket and bomb attacks –  were killed in air strikes on Gaza.

Israeli police said the dead man was travelling in a car that burst through the al-Zaim checkpoint at high-speed on Monday and tried to run over officers.

The officers issued repeated warnings to the driver, a spokesman said.

Palestinian police said the car had entered the wrong lane and was reversing to go down the correct one when the Israelis opened fire.

Palestinian medical workers said the three men in the car had been travelling to pray at dawn in Jerusalem. One man was injured. The driver reportedly fled the scene

A Hamas member was killed and another fighter wounded during an air strike on Gaza City. And hours earlier, three more people were hurt when a tank shell hit their vehicle near the city. On this occasion, the Israeli army said it was targeting “a Hamas terrorist squad” in the vehicle.

An Egypt-brokered ceasefire had been formally announced last month.

This round of violence in Gaza flared up last month after a cross-border attack from Sinai which left an Israeli civilian dead. In six days of violence which began on June 18, Israel killed 15 Palestinians and injured dozens more, while Palestinian fighters fired more than 150 rockets at Israel, injuring five.

Gunter Grass, a poem and a ban from Israel

Günter Grass: ‘What Must Be Said’

Why have I kept silent, held back so long,

on something openly practiced in

war games, at the end of which those of us

who survive will at best be footnotes?

It’s the alleged right to a first strike

that could destroy an Iranian people

subjugated by a loudmouth

and gathered in organized rallies,

because an atom bomb may be being

developed within his arc of power.

Yet why do I hesitate to name

that other land in which

for years – although kept secret –

a growing nuclear power has existed

beyond supervision or verification,

subject to no inspection of any kind?

This general silence on the facts,

before which my own silence has bowed,

seems to me a troubling lie, and compels

me toward a likely punishment

the moment it’s flouted:

the verdict “Anti-semitism” falls easily.

But now that my own country,

brought in time after time

for questioning about its own crimes,

profound and beyond compare,

has delivered yet another submarine to Israel,

(in what is purely a business transaction,

though glibly declared an act of reparation)

whose speciality consists in its ability

to direct nuclear warheads toward

an area in which not a single atom bomb

has yet been proved to exist, its feared

existence proof enough, I’ll say what must be said.

But why have I kept silent till now?

Because I thought my own origins,

Tarnished by a stain that can never be removed,

meant I could not expect Israel, a land

to which I am, and always will be, attached,

to accept this open declaration of the truth.

Why only now, grown old,

and with what ink remains, do I say:

Israel’s atomic power endangers

an already fragile world peace?

Because what must be said

may be too late tomorrow;

and because—burdend enough as Germans—

we may be providing material for a crime

that is foreseeable, so that our complicity

wil not be expunged by any

of the usual excuses.

And granted: I’ve broken my silence

because I’m sick of the West’s hypocrisy;

and I hope too that many may be freed

from their silence, may demand

that those responsible for the open danger

we face renounce the use of force,

may insist that the governments of

both Iran and Israel allow an international authority

free and open inspection of

the nuclear potential and capability of both.

No other course offers help

to Israelis and Palestinians alike,

to all those living side by side in emnity

in this region occupied by illusions,

and ultimately, to all of us.

—Günter Grass

War with Iran

12 Thursday Jan 2012

ANALYSIS – The correspondent on Newsnight last night ended his analysis of the latest development in the Iran, namely the assassination of another of her nuclear scientists as he left work in Teheran, with an admission that it is probably inevitable that there will be a war with Iran in some form, perhaps at the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran would probably argue that the war had already begun a long time ago, beginning with George Bush’s speech and the slow trickle of attacks, including cyber terrorism and the continued violations of her sovereignty that the latest killing is.

Last week, the Iranian navy threatened to shut of the Strait of Hormuz in response to the latest round of US sponsored sanctions aimed at Iranian banks amongst others.

The threat was accompanied with a clear statement – that Iran was the undisputed power of the Gulf region.

If this will be lead to war then a war with China may be around in the not too distant future.

China – who received a visit from the US yesterday in an effort to get her to stop buying oil from Iran – has recently complained about America’s build up in Asia.

Will a war in the Strait of Hormuz be followed by war in the South China Sea?

Those who favour such actions may also want to take a look at a video that has been on played on television screens today – namely of 4 soldiers urinating over three bodies.

War dehumanises all who take part in it, it is not glorious and its effects last forever.

Get Tougher on Iran, says Richard Perle

14 Wednesday Dec 2011

George Bush, Iran, Iran and the bomb, Iraq, Iraq War, Israel, Richard Perle, USA 🇺🇸

One of the key figures of the Bush administration, and perhaps its strongest advocate for war in Iraq- apart from Dick Cheney and George Bush himself – has appeared on RussiaToday to push for a stronger American response to Iran.

What Richard Perle said of the need to combat the threat of a nuclear armed Iran is not surprising – given his recent history – however what was more telling were his admissions about other issues. He did admit that if a country had an atom bomb – say North Korea – the US would not attack it, though he went on to quantify that by adding that Kim Jong’s regime would also inflict immense damage on the South in any conflict.

As far as he was concerned, Iraq was a threat that had to be taken out, where America got it wrong was occupying the country which had then allowed an insurgency to develop.

He believed that America was not the only nation to be hated in the Muslim world, there was also Russia and the UK, and that the West was only defending itself in taking the actions it has done so far.

There was, he believed a struggle between people who wanted to impose their way of life on everyone and us.

He did not believe that was what America was doing.

America did not feel superior but rather proud of its way of life.

He was asked about one American mother who had lost her son in the Iraq war, to which he said he was sorry, however, there was no indication of any awareness that the invasion of Iraq had cost one million civilian lives, with millions more unable to return to their country for fear of the violence that that invasion had unleashed.

In fact, the well spoken Mr Perle gives the impression that he sleeps very easily at night.
