Hodgson says Germany were poor once
ANALYSIS
Roy Hodgson was appointed for a number of reasons, one of which may have been to lower expectations.
On that at least, he did not disappoint.
No one expected England to do well, and even if they had managed to beat Italy – which would have been a great injustice to football – they would have been taken apart by Germany.
England’s football management seem unable to have grasped what other countries understood long ago, namely that the emergence of Spain as World Champions heralded a new, more exciting way of playing the beautiful game.
Even the Germans with all their successes behind them understood that.
So also Holland and Russia, who despite failing to progress in this tournament can build on their performances.
For in spite of their flaws, those teams are still a work in progress.
Sadly, that can not be said of England.
And the reaction of FA Chairman David Bernstein to this unsatisfactory England exit from another major tournament does not bode well for the future either.
He believes that England can build on their performances.
In fact, the best that can be said of this bunch of overpaid, overrated and uninspiring team of players is that they resemble Dad’s Army.
And with the rivalry between Spain and Germany dominating football in the way that was once reserved for Brazil and Argentina, that will not be good enough.
Sadly for the home of football, that will mean riding your luck before the inevitable – namely the pathetic sight of Dad’s Army Coming Home.

BREAKING NEWS
Donetsk, Group D: England v Ukraine
Kiev, Group D: Sweden v France
Ukraine, despite all their energy and enthusiasm were unable to make it count when it mattered. This was a professional performance from an England side that were few on thrills and were lucky to score at the beginning of the second half. Wayne Rooney who was clearly not at his best after missing the first two games following suspension put his foot at the end of a Steven Gerrard cross and after that Ukraine showed lots of energy with little to show.
England will thank the Ukraine goal keeper for allowing Rooney the chance and the assistant referee who did not see the ball cross the line at their end.
And they will also thank Sweden for beating France 2-0 and thus ensuring they will not have to play Spain in the Quarter Finals.
Instead, the team who came top of Group D will face Italy.

BREAKING NEWS
Kiev, Group D: Sweden v England
England underestimated their opponents, and that seemed to have backfired until the 64th minute when an inspired substitution from Roy Hodgson turned the game on its head.
England went ahead in the first half with an Andy Carroll goal, but they the time Theo Walcott was brought on as a substitute, this still highly experimental English side were two one behind.
Walcott’s second touch was a brilliant long-range effort to make things even.
And then his surge and cross was somehow put into the back of the net by Danny Welbeck.
England had won their first competitive game against Sweden, who are now out of contention for this tournament.
How far can England go from here…well they do have a manager who knows how to make use of the resources at hand.

BREAKING NEWS
Donetsk, Group D: France v England
Roy Hodgson fielded an experimental team for their opening game against one of the teams who are tipped to win the tournament and the inclusion of Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain gave the side much-needed vitality at the front.
And for the first half hour England looked good, opening the French defence at least twice with James Milner hitting the side netting after 14th minutes. When Joleon Lescott put them in front after 30 minutes, England looked on their way. However the euphoria lasted for eight minutes as Samir Nasri creeped one past Joe Hart and the French began their comeback ending the first half looking the more assured side.
The second half was largely a messy affair. The game needed something special to bring it alive and there were moments when the French with their firepower at the front looked menacing.
However, the game was largely one of stalemate, a well organised English team with few surprises managing to deaden a French team that on paper looked like a skilful smooth team of operators.
England will take heart. As for France, well they’ll have to improve vastly if they’re going to challenge Germany, Russia, Spain or Italy in the closing stages.

BREAKING NEWS
Stunning Danny Welbeck goal in 38th minute of first half, the highlight of an otherwise forgettable final Euro warm-up game against a Belgium side that won’t be at this summer’s tournament.
Once again, England were well drilled, work-man like with occasional surges that looked threatening as shown by Jermaine Dafoe who in the 80th minute hit the post, and then the side netting in the 90th.
Belgium did threaten at the end, but were clearly going threw the motions in a game that was really a warm-up for England who will face France on June 11.
As Roy Hodgson gets more confident and settled in his role, the approach he has taken to this side will hold them in good stead in Euro 2012 where they will confound their doubters and do well.

TEMPLATE REPORT
FA Chairman David Bernstein confirmed that only one club was approached for the position of England manager and that the decision to appoint Roy Hodgson was based on his experience and how he had performed with the resources available at club level, as well as international level, which the FA believes means that he will make the transition from Club manager to England coach.
Bernstein mentioned Stuart Pearce, but did not refer to the public’s choice of Harry Redknapp.
He did say that there was a shortlist of more than two people, and that West Bromwich had asked for Hodgson to remain their coach for the last two games of the Premier League.
He said that the FA had decided on Hodgson a month ago and would not discuss any other name for the position.
Adding that he was only the only England manager to come to the position with international and tournament football experience.
Roy Hodgson said he has moved forward from the unhappy time he had as coach of Liverpool.
When asked about his decision to play in apartheid South Africa forty years ago, he said he had made that decision on football reasons and that he detested the regime.
Hodgson said that he had received a voice mail message from Harry Redknapp congratulating him on his appointment and hoped they would remain friends and not rivals.

Stuart Pearce, England’s stand in coach, fielded a young side for this warm up for the Euros and it was not a complete failure by any means.
Sure, England’s lack of experience when pitted against world-class opposition that included Arjen Robben and Arsenal’s Robin van Persie was clear for all who were present at Wembley last night.
The Dutch – who were awful in that World Cup final defeat to Spain – played with in themselves and always looked as if they could step up a gear when they needed to.
And they grabbed two excellent goals within three minutes to take the lead in the second half.
However, England got two back with some well worked moves which should be something that a future coach could build on.
Of course, Holland were the better team, everyone could see that, however there was enough to hint at a brighter future if you are an England fan.
It’s too early to start talking about emerging stars and based on previous experience not a good idea – so the best that can be said of this game is that a highly experimental England side worked hard, played with spirit and at the end left enough to encourage the home of football.

Fabio Capello’s fate was sealed during that World Cup game with Germany when an England team who had until the last ten minutes of the first half been completely outclassed fought back by applying pressure on their much younger rivals.
The same was expected in the second half, but did not occur which allowed Germany to get back into the game on their own terms.
Perhaps, a Martin O Neill or Harry Redknapp would have seen the opportunity, the vastly overpaid and over-rated Fabio Capello did not.
The FA have alot of questions to ask about this whole saga – why did they appoint this man in the first place to run a team of players that were not despite what was being claimed a golden generation.
Truth is England have only once looked like winning a tournament – Euro 96 under the creative genius that was Terry Venables.
And what happened to him then?
