Sixteen months after the uprising in Cairo’s Tahrir Square that ousted Hosni Mubarak, Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Mursi is elected President of Egypt. He beat his rival former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq by almost a million votes.

The Higher Presidential Election Commission said Mursi had won 51.73% of the vote, to beat Shafiq,  The head of the panel of judges, Farouq Sultan, said it had upheld some of the 466 complaints by the candidates, but that the election result still stood.

Mursi, an American educated University Professor, will be President for four years in the Arab World’s most populous Muslim country. His powers as President are restricted though, after the military supended parliament where elections had awarded the Muslim Brotherhood 47 percent of votes cast.

BREAKING NEWS

Egypt’s state Television has said that there will be a delay in announcing the outcome of the country’s Presidential elections.

The results of the second stage of the elections were expected on Thursday.

However, the Supreme Elections Commission said it was still reviewing complaints from the main candidates, Ahmed Shafiq, the former PM of the last President of Egypt, and Mohamed Morsi, from the Muslim Brotherhood.

And in a separate development, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been moved from prison to an army hospital in Cairo, where he remains in a critical condition. He is said to have had a series of strokes and to be on a life support machine. Reports that he was “clinically dead” have been denied. But there has been no official statement.

Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s former President, has been sentenced to life in prison for complicity in the killing of protesters during demonstrations last year which led to his overthrow.

Judge Ahmed Refaat said the Mubarak era was “30 years of darkness”. He also praised “the sons of the nation who rose up peacefully for freedom and justice”.

However, the 84-year-old and his two sons were acquitted on separate charges of corruption, although  Alaa and Gamal, will remain in detention because they are to go on trial on charges of stock market manipulation.

State television reported that the former president suffered a “health crisis”, as he was transferred from the courthouse to the hospital of Tora prison, near Cairo.

Hosni Mubarak: Guilty of conspiring in killing of protesters – life imprisonment; not guilty of corruption

  • Alaa and Gamal Mubarak: Not guilty of corruption
  • Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly: Guilty of conspiring in killing of protesters – life imprisonment
  • Four aides of al-Adly: Not guilty of charges of complicity, instigation and providing assistance in the murder and attempted murder of protesters
  • Hussein Salem, business tycoon: Not guilty of corruption

After Mubarak, Egyptians now vote for a new President

23 Wednesday May 2012

Fifteen months after ousting Hosni Mubarak, Egypt is holding its first ever free presidential election.

Some fifty million people are eligible to vote.

The military council which assumed presidential power in February 2011 has promised a fair vote and civilian rule.

The name to watch are:

  • Ahmed Shafiq, a former commander of the air force and briefly prime minister during February 2011 protests
  • Amr Moussa, who has served as foreign minister and head of the Arab League
  • Mohammed Mursi, who heads Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party
  • Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh, an independent Islamist candidate

As a new constitution has yet to be approved, it is unclear what powers the president will have.

A Woman attacked by Egyptian Security Forces

Until yesterday, I would have said that the most horrific and disturbing image of the year would have been the slaughter of Colonel Gaddafi by thugs armed by Nato.

What a difference a day makes…no one even those of us used to the stories of the brutality engaged by Middle Eastern governments on their own people were prepared for the casual, shameless attack on this young woman.

At first, you could have mistaken the body, lying on the floor with her top half there for the world to see, for a manikin as she was set upon by two, three may be more security guards.

Later credible reports say she was veiled before her humiliation.

The Egyptian army are going to find this impossible to explain away.

Muslims never attack women.

The protesters on Tahrir Square say Mubarak has never left – on the evidence of this image perhaps they are right.

Mubarak at Court

04 Thursday Aug 2011

And inside a cage…

So finally Hosni Mubarak appeared before a court, behind a cage to answer for some of his crimes against his people.

Lying on a bed, this eighty something year-old man looked a sad and pathetic figure.

When Saddam Hussein appeared before a kangaroo court installed by the American appointed government of Nouri al Maliki, it was hard not to feel some sympathy.

For here was a man who despite all of his many faults had attempted to forge a nation out of three squabbling former provinces of the Ottoman empire.

Everything he had done, he had done for the sacred soil of Iraq, even the massacre of Kurds at Halabja.

Saddam was not uniquely evil, he was a ruthless dictator who was a fierce nationalist.

Not everyone was going to like him –  certainly not those Iraqis who fled his repression.

And not the Americans who after a decade of bombing and sanctions discovered that he was actually becoming popular with his people – and further –  for standing up to  ‘Yanky Imperialism’.

The trouble is what can you say in defence of Hosni Mubarak, who ruled with an iron fist since the assassination of Anwar Sadat.

Mubarak always gave the impression that he lived and thrived on feeding off the blood of his people.

When he was stripped of the chance to continue to do so, he simply wasted.

Enough said?

How YouTube contributes to our understanding of the World

Fallen Pharaoh?

ANALYSIS

If like me, you are glued to the television screen as events unfold at the Middle East, then you may want to consider alternative sources of information to fill in the gaps left by  BBC, ITV and Sky. With this in mind YouTube has become invaluable. I was first aware of its clear potential – though I am sure that many had spotted this much earlier than I! – during the early years of the Iraq war, particularly in the first six months when the Allies were claiming victory and yet were facing almost daily attacks. Then, members of this global community were posting news reports from American as well other channels, clearing showing the war had only just begun and would be a long hard struggle, which may not end favourable for those who had come as liberators. The most powerful video images were posted by those who fought in the war, whether they were the soldiers themselves or the so-called insurgents. I will always remember one posting that showed very young and very terrified American soldiers holed up in a room attempting to fire out of a window at an enemy they could not see. “Where is he?” one young man cried, “Is he there, is he there? With Hosni Mubarak clinging onto power despite widespread anger at him and his whole regime, Youtube has once again come of its own. One posting that did not make onto the BBC of ITV News, but was used on Iranian-run Press TV was that of a truck running through gap in a crowd of demonstrators. This was a deliberate attempt to intimidate peaceful protestors, a fact driven home by the driver who knocked aside one man and ran over another and continued driving at breakneck speed. Unfortunately, one gets the impression that there an awful lot of these incidents and hundreds, possibly thousands of deaths before the status quo is overturned. And when it does, one suspects that Youtube will a huge part to play to giving us all the full story of this historic event. And another thing, I remember seeing a you tube posting a car accident in which the driver had simply driven onto the pavement and knocked over a pedestrian. The driver then walked out of her vehicle to look at the damage done to it. She was not prosecuted because she was a member of Russia’s elite. Incidents like this always point to a nation that is on its way down. Had Youtube been around at the time of the Cold War, perhaps the end of the Soviet Union would not have been such a shock. If Russia continues to disintegrate, as some are predicting, then Youtube postings such as this one will be used as an indicators of what was really going on behind all the bright lights and smiley faces of post-Soviet Moscow.
