Arsenal are fifth in the Premiership, four points behind third placed Spurs and two behind Chelsea. Neither of these two sides are better teams than Arsene Wenger’s men – but can that be said of the Manchester sides that sit in first and second place? And there is the root of the problem, for the manager who once set the standard finds himself playing catch up by a long way.
In Europe, they were taken apart by a clinical Bayern Munich side that made it look ridiculous easy despite being away from home.
Theo Walcott who recently secured another highly lucrative contract is still a yard short when he comes up against world-class opposition.
Nothing new in seeing Premiership sides fail in the Champion’s League – all English sides have struggled in Europe, even Chelsea’s victory last season was more down to luck than their superior football skills.
But if the board at Arsenal are serious about a replacement – then there needs to be credible alternative.
Celtic’s Neil Lennon wouldn’t be a bad choice – his Celtic team failed against AC Milan because of a lack of word class firepower up front – something a rich club like the one based at the Emirates would be happy to oblige him with.
Of course, even now with Arsenal twenty-one points behind Manchester United in the Premier League and a humiliating FA Cup defeat to Championship side Blackburn Rovers behind them, no one is seriously talking about letting go of the great man.
And that’s that.

ANALYSIS – With his team crashing out of the FA Cup to a hungrier Sunderland, to cap a week when they were taken apart by AC Milan, there will be those who will wonder whether the great man will be there next season.
Most likely he will remain – only Arsene may want to take into account the contributions two of England’s best coaches have made, Tottenham’s Harry Redknapp and the man who masterminded today’s defeat, Martin O’Neil, namely to keep things tight, don’t leave gaps for the opposition to exploit whether at the front or back.
Those of us who were admirers of Arsenal always feared that the lack of one strong player at the back and at the front would cost them in the long run.
Arsenal were so long the purveyors of the beautiful game, but who ever said beauty can’t be backed up by some steel and old-fashioned grit.

With his team two down, on the back of heavy defeats to AC Milan and Sunderland, Arsene Wenger must have wondered whether his once great side was facing its third straight high-profile failure.
And with former golden boy Theo Walcott also the subject of abuse from home fans, the omens did not look good.
The Arsenal boss needed his men to step up.
They did not disappoint – by the end of the first half Arsenal had wiped out that lead.
Once again, it was Robin Van Persie, who set up the first and secured the second, all within three minutes.
The second half was all Arsenal with Walcott’s surges – often criticised for not going anywhere – producing two impressive goals.
Arsenal’s fans – some of whom had left the stadium after their North London rivals exposed the Gunner’s defensive frailties with a goal in the fourth minute and a penalty by Emanuel Adebayor in the twentieth – were toasting perhaps their team’s greatest triumph since that defeat of Barcelona on February 16, 2011.
They were also toasting the former fall guy now restored golden boy Theo Walcott.
Arsenal’s problems at the front and back are still there, but surely the true test of this team will be whether they can put five past AC Milan in the Champions League on March 6. Then, we will know whether Arsenal have moved on or have just flattered to deceive.

Arsenal were outplayed, outclassed and were completely out of their depth last night. AC Milan actually struggled to get to this stage – there again who wouldn’t with Barcelona in your group – you would never have guessed it by the way they took apart Arsene Wenger’s men last night – 4-0 was being kind, this was men against boys, and the appearance of their legend Thierry Henry for one last hurrah only hinted that this was Arsenal that was on the field at the San Siro and that this was one of the best teams in Europe.
Robinho netted two – the first of which came after a stunning volley from Kevin Prince Boeting, and everytime you looked at the coach’s corner, the usually authoritative Arsene Wenger looked more lost than the rest of us.
If rumours that Henry wants to continue prove to be true, then this Arsenal team will need him for Robin Van Persie is currently carrying this side and that can’t last forever.
Those who thought Arsenal had moved on from that 8-2 drubbing from Manchester United, may want to think again.
