๐Ÿช– Beginning to resemble the fall of Saigon.. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ซ

Afghanistan, Saigon, Taliban, Vietnam

America and her allies are losing the war in Afghanistan.

In the latest incident, gunmen have targeted the US embassy as well as Isaf’s headquarters.

Other ‘spectaculars’ include the attack on a US base on September 11 which killed two civilians and injured 77 US soldiers.

The Taliban had marked another anniversary in equally deadly manner when it attacked the British Council on the day some eighty years or so back when Imperial Britian was evicted from Afghanistan.

And there was the downing of that helicopter -which turned to be carrying a number of the special forces responsible for the assassination of Osama Bin laden in Pakistan.

Each attack is met with a fresh line from the occupying powers.

This time, it is the ability of Afghan soldiers to maintain the peace after the departure of Isaf.

America and her allies are losing this war.

The sooner they realise this the better for everyone – including the Afghan civilians who have suffered the most from this decade-long war.

Afghanistan

The latest murder to be claimed by the Taliban has taken place in Kandahar. It came after the high profile shooting of the Afghan President’s half brother, who was the governor of Kandahar. This man was said to be rooting out corruption in the war strife country and was portrayed on BBC News as being someone who will be difficult to replace especially as the pool of available candidates is already near drought levels. The news report also carried an interview with America’s general in area who said that such actions were a sure sign of desperation on the part of the Taliban who had been clearly defeated.

This news story comes on the same day that Britain expelled eight Libyan diplomats and said that it recognised the Transnational National Council as the official representatives of the people of Libya. The story carried a handful of people outside the Libyan embassy applauding the decision and one man said that 99 per cent of Libyan people did not like Gaddafi.

When news reports – who ever carries them – take this clear line and tone then they are little more than propaganda, and what’s more depressing is that the impression left is one of a never ending cycle of violence. There has also been very little coverage of the cost on civilian lives Nato’s bombing campaigns are having.

Surely, the first place to start in covering any war is how it will affect ordinary people, whose lives are never going to be the same ever again because a higher power has decided that the best way to resolve a dispute is through war.

Afghanistan

It is often remarked that Great Britain’s was the empire on whom the sun never set. It was also the empire on the whom the never blood never ran dry, which makes the current figures released by the UN all the more ghalling.ย  It says that theย first six months of this year killed more civilians than at anytime through out the current conflict in Afghanistan.ย  From January to June, a total of ย 1,462 civilians were killed, aย 15 per cent increase on the same period last year.ย “The rising tide of violence and bloodshed in the first half of 2011 brought injury and death to Afghan civilians at levels without recorded precedent in the current armed conflict,” the report says. In a stark reminder, last night (Wednesday),ย  at least six more people were killed in a Nato raid on a house in Matun, in Khost province , which local Afghans said were civilians but Nato claim were insurgents.

Media reports always break such figures down to insurgent activity, etc, but the truth is that asย the occupying power, America along withย her Nato allies – just like Great Britain in its heyday –ย  know they are fully responsible for allย combat related deaths because it is their job to ensure a peaceful environment for human beings to get on with their day to day lives.

If they can’t, then they should leave.

Afghanistan, America and Afghanistan, Karzai, Taliban

Hamid Karzai’s brother was killed yesterday, a shooting that the Taliban had claimed responsibility for. Taking out the brother of the President of Afghanistan, who was the governor of Kandahar, was they said their greatest achievement of this entire war.

Of course, this does not mean that the war is over in any way.

However, if one adds this on to the attacks in Kabul which began with a spectacular attempt to storm the capital a year or so ago, as well as the rising coalition casuality numbers – there is not a day when there is not a report of an incident resulting in a loss of life – and one can sense that America’s position around the bargaining table is getting that much weaker. ย Those who have been following this war from the beginning could see that the American-led invasion after the attacks on 9/11 was doomed to fail from the start. You can talk about the history, more recently that of the failed Soviet occupation, and of courseย that of Great Britain, and Alexander the Great. The reality though isย that by allying themselves with such characters as Ahmed Wali Karzai the Americans were never going to get a fully functioning state and as a result they were never going to secure the goodwill of the people of Afghanistan, which is, frankly, who they are currently fighting in this their longest war.

How many are really dying in the Afghan War?

Afghanistan, Afghanistan War, PressTV, UK

Apparently, the British government is attempting to shut down Iranian-owned Press Tv. It continues however, to broadcast on television and on its website, where I first stumbled on its videos because PressTv is actually covering the civilian death toll of the Afghan conflict. Video postings include the slaughter of a family at marriage ceremony in Farah province by a multi-ton bomb dropped by Nato by mistake and the attempt by the Taliban to storm Kabul last summer, which is particularly memorable because the reporter on the scene was virtually thrown off his feet by the impact of the gunfire. The reporter was fine and still continues to  file reports within minutes of an incident in this war torn country to PressToday which still broadcasts on television and the internet. www.presstv.ir
