TEMPLATE REPORT

“In the light of the fact that the director general is also the editor in chief and ultimately responsible for all content, and in the light of the unacceptable journalistic standards of the Newsnight film broadcast on Friday 2 November, I have decided that the honourable thing to do is to step down from the post of director general,” George Entwistle said in a statement outside New Broadcasting House. He said that when he was appointed to the role, he was confident BBC trustees had chosen the best candidate for the post and the “right person to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead”.

“However the wholly exceptional events of the past few weeks have led me to conclude that the BBC should appoint a new leader,” he said.

“To have been the director general of the BBC even for a short period, and in the most challenging of circumstances, has been a great honour.

“While there is understandable public concern over a number of issues well covered in the media – which I’m confident will be addressed by the review process – we must not lose sight of the fact that the BBC is full of people of the greatest talent and the highest integrity.

“That’s what will continue to make it the finest broadcaster in the world.”

BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten, who made a statement following Mr Entwistle’s resignation, said: “This is undoubtedly one of the saddest evenings of my public life.”

He said: “At the heart of the BBC is its role as a trusted global news organisation.

“As the editor in chief of that news organisation George has very honourably offered us his resignation because of the unacceptable mistakes – the unacceptable shoddy journalism – which has caused us so much controversy.

“He has behaved as editor with huge honour and courage and would that the rest of the world always behaved the same.”

Tim Davie, who is currently the BBC’s director of audio and music, has been made acting director general.

Mr Entwistle took up the post of director general on 17 September.

Earlier today, Mr Entwistle said the Newsnight report, which wrongly implicated ex-senior Tory Lord McAlpine should never have been broadcast.

📺 Savile SCANDAL…Now, BBC Director General appears before the House of Commons Select Committee

TEMPLATE REPORT

A Newsnight investigation into claims of abuse by former BBC star Jimmy Savile should not have been dropped, the head of the one of the most powerful media organisations in the world admitted today.

George Entwistle, Director General of the BBC, also told the House of Commons Select Committee that the organisation was investigating up to 10 “serious allegations” involving past and present employees.

George Entwistle who often looked uncomfortable during a two-hour grilling from MPs, said:  “There is no question that what Jimmy Savile did and the way the BBC behaved in the years – the culture and practices of the BBC seems to allow Jimmy Savile to do what he did – will raise questions of trust for us and reputation for us.

“This is a gravely serious matter and one cannot look back at it with anything other than horror, frankly, that… his activities went on as long as they did undetected.”

Savile, who was also a DJ and died last year aged 84, was described by police as a predatory sex offender. They believe he may have abused many people – including young girls – over a 40-year period and a criminal investigation is under way. On Monday, the BBC’s Panorama programme reported on the abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile, as well as the decision by Newsnight last December to drop its investigations into the claims.

Newsnight editor Peter Rippon had made the decision to drop the Newsnight investigation “on his own account”, the director general said.

“I came away from Panorama firmly of the view that that investigation, even if in the judgement of the editor it wasn’t ready for transmission at the point he was looking at it, should have been allowed to continue.

“What became clear to us after the blog was published was that what had happened on Newsnight, there was a significant, it seemed, difference of opinion between the people working on the investigation and the editor, Peter Rippon, who commissioned the investigation.”

An independent inquiry led by former Sky head of news Nick Pollard will examine why the Newsnight investigation was dropped. George Entwistle  said he asked Newsnight editor Peter Rippon to step aside because of inaccuracies in his blog. George Entwistle was also asked about a brief conversation with BBC director of news  Helen Boaden last December about the possibility of Newsnight running their  report about Savile, while Mr Entwistle, as then BBC director of Vision, was planning Christmas tribute pieces to the presenter.

“The key message I took away was that it wasn’t yet clear to Helen whether it was going to stand up or not.

“I wouldn’t have had any qualms about making any changes we needed to make to the Christmas schedule.”

When asked if it had been a failure by him to ask further questions about the nature of the report, he said he didn’t want to show “undue interest”, adding: “I don’t believe I did fail… the system as a whole doesn’t seem to have got this right.”

Asked whether he now regretted running the tribute programmes for Savile, Mr Entwistle told MPs: “In the light of what’s happening, of course I do.”

He added that the Panorama programme pointed to the BBC’s health as a media organisation, rather than being a “symptom of chaos”, because it showed the organisation’s capacity to investigate itself.

He said no other news organisation in the world would do this.

As well as the Pollard review, former Court of Appeal judge Dame Janet Smith will lead a review into the culture and practices of the BBC during Savile’s time at the corporation and will also examine if the BBC’s child protection and whistleblowing policies are fit for purpose.

Hillsborough, South Yorkshire Police

Kelvin Mackenzie  says he has been “deeply affected by the affair.

He says he is not a victim but has “suffered collateral damage”

Were he to visit Liverpool he would “literally be in mortal danger”, he writes in tomorrow’s Spectator.

MacKenzie printed a front page story about Liverpool fans, shortly after the
1989 Hillsborough disaster in which 96 people were killed headlined “The Truth”.

The Hillsborough Independent Inquiry report, which was published two weeks ago, said there was no evidence to support the allegations in the paper.

It stated: “The documents disclosed to the panel show that the origin of these serious allegations was a local Sheffield press agency informed by several South Yorkshre Police (SYP) officers, an SYP Police Federation spokesperson and a local MP.

“They also demonstrate how the SYP Police Federation, supported informally by the SYP chief constable, sought to develop and publicise a version of events that focused on several police officers’ allegations of drunkenness, ticketlessness and violence among a large number of Liverpool fans.”

Describing the circumstances that led him to publish the false claims, he said a “trap was sprung” when he was handed copy from a reputable news agency.

The story was sourced from four senior South Yorkshire police officers, he says, and “copper-bottomed” by a Conservative MP.

“I thought nothing of running the story with the headline ‘The Truth’,” he writes.

“There was not a doubt in my mind – and I was by no means the only man in Fleet St who believed the police’s story.”

His piece concludes: “This week my lawyer, Ian Rosenblatt, sent a letter to South Yorkshire Police explaining that the lies their officers told to the news agency had led to my personal vilification for decades and that on that basis I was seeking an apology in terms to be agreed between us. I hope that after 23 years we can all agree on the truth.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said the force “awaits Mr MacKenzie’s letter with interest”.

“It is well-known that many media outlets ran similar stories at the time based on the same sources but chose to treat them differently,” he said.

“Mr MacKenzie was responsible for the particular headline he chose to run with.”

Sky ‘fit and proper’ to hold broadcast licences, Ofcom rules

In a ruling on Thursday, Ofcom said: “In July 2011, in light of the public debate about phone hacking and other allegations, Ofcom confirmed that it had a duty to consider whether Sky was fit and proper to continue to hold its broadcast licences.

“Ofcom considers that, on the evidence currently available and having taken into account all the relevant factors, Sky is fit and proper to hold its broadcast licences.”

Ofcom said, however, that “should further evidence become available” it may review the issue. Criminal investigations into phone hacking continue and several court cases involving senior executives from News International are pending.

However, the conduct of James Murdoch, who resigned as chairman of BSkyB in April (but remains a non-executive director) and has also relinquished his role at the UK newspaper group, was questionable, Ofcom concluded.

The regulator said: “Ofcom considers on the basis of the evidence available to date… James Murdoch’s conduct in relation to events at NGN [the newspaper group] repeatedly fell short of the conduct to be expected of him as a chief executive officer and chairman.

“However, Ofcom considers that the evidence available to date does not provide a reasonable basis to conclude that James Murdoch deliberately engaged in any wrongdoing.”

While acknowledging that many of the circumstances over phone hacking were outside of Mr Murdoch’s control or unknown to him, Ofcom criticises severely his failure to make himself aware of the deepening scandal.

“We consider James Murdoch’s conduct, including his failure to initiate action on his own account on a number of occasions, to be both difficult to comprehend and ill-judged.

“We consider that the events… raise questions regarding James Murdoch’s competence in the handling of these matters, and his attitude towards the possibility of wrongdoing in the companies for which he was responsible,” Ofcom said.

The regulator said that Mr Murdoch’s non-executive role on the BSkyB board did not impact on its “fit and proper” test, because there were other “experienced individuals who would be expected to be capable of exercising effective independent oversight”.

Ofcom continued: “We recognise that whether it is appropriate for James Murdoch to be a director in light of the events is a matter for the board and shareholders of Sky.”

Gore Vidal is dead

Gore Vidal, Politics 💼 🗳 🪖, USA 🇺🇸

Gore Vidal, the brilliant writer famed for his acerbic wit and often sharp political views, has died at the age of 86. He died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, his family has confirmed. The cause of his death is believed to be complications from pneumonia.

Gore Vidal wrote 25 novels –  including the best-selling Burr and Myra Breckenridge.

He also wrote more than 200 essays and several plays.

He ran for political office twice.

His circle of friends included Tennessee Williams, Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra. He was also closely linked to the Kennedy family, becoming a confidant of Jackie Kennedy, who was his stepsister. Vidal ran for a seat in Congress in 1960 and again in 1982, but lost both times.

He was deeply critical of George Bush’s administration and in 2008 said of the 2003 war on Iraq:

‘You can see little Bush all along was just dreaming of war, and also Cheney dreaming about oil wells and how you knock apart a country like Iraq and of course their oil will pay for the damage you do. For that alone, he should have been put in front of a firing squad… They – Cheney, Bush – they wanted the war. They’re oilmen. They want a war to get more oil. They’re also extraordinarily stupid. These people don’t know anything about anything.’

Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president, has been found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes during the Sierra Leone civil war .

A UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

He will serve his sentence in a British prison.

The events for which Taylor was charged run  from November 1996 to January 2002.

Taylor provided rebel armies with weapons in exchange for diamonds during their operations to retake important districts and cities in Sierra Leone in 1998 and 1999.

Between November and December 1998, Taylor met a rebel leader, known as Bockarie in Monrovia, where they devised a two-pronged attack on Kono, Kenema and Freetown.

According to a 44-page summary of the judgement, Taylor had emphasised to Bockarie the need to first attack Kono District and told Bockarie to make the operation “fearful” in order to pressure the Government of Sierra Leone into negotiations on the release of another rebel leader Foday Sankoh from prison, as well as to use “all means” to get to Freetown.  Subsequently, Bockarie named the operation “Operation No Living Thing,” implying that anything that stood in their way should be eliminated. …”
