πŸͺ– What now for Ukraine – a split in two? πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί – πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

ANALYSIS –Β When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991,Β  there was bloodshed, perhaps not as much as feared, but it was still awful with wars following the breakup of Yugoslavia and the attempt by the people of the Caucasus to finally rid themselves of the long bondage of Moscow that resulted in bloody failure. One of the first European nations to emerge free of the old Soviet bonds was of course Poland. And the pictures on our television screens of protesters in Kiev clashing with police, armed with riot gear using live ammunition to disperse the crowds, suggests that that other European nation to a share a border with Russia, called Ukraine, is once again playing out its long struggle for freedom. Of course, Vladimir Putin for whom the collapse of the Soviet Union was the biggest geopolitical disaster of the end of the last century is not going to let go of a country where he has stationed his Black Sea fleet for another 100 years and where Russian speakers form a majority towards the east anymore than he was going to let go of Chechnya. But this time he faces a powerful foe namely the European Union backed by the US who will not tolerate the kind of widespread and indiscriminate slaughter by ‘security forces’ that was witnessed in the killing fields of Grozny. So, is a split inevitable and would that be the best solution?
Western commentators clearly think so, whilst those from Russia don’t think there’s anything to talk about – President Victor Yanakovich has been urged to do his job properly namely disperse the crowds of Nazis, thugs and hooligans that are being trained by the West and who have been warned to stay away from the Crimea.
And of course, there’s the nationalists who are now on the streets spilling blood as well as attacking the police and who would never accept the breakup of their country. Ukraine may be the last European nation to break free of Russia but it is going to come at an awful cost.

Why Premier League sides don’t cut it in Europe

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

There was a depressing familiarity to Arsenal’s defeat to Bayern Munich at the Emirates stadium last night.
Arsene Wenger’s men are currently sitting near the top of the Premier League where they have been for most of the season, and yet that didn’t matter when faced with the current European champions.
Like Manchester City the night before, Arsenal were taught a lesson by the German Champions who many argue are a stronger side this season than the one that destroyed Barcelona in the last.
After a strong start the Germans took full advantage of a penalty miss by Mesut Ozil in the first half to put the game out of Arsenal’s reach in the second with goals from the highly rated Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller.
Arsenal like City face an uphill struggle when they leave the comfort of their own turf for the second leg of this tie.
Already, winning this competition looks well out of their reach, and that of Manuel Pellegrini’s side whose outstanding performances in the Premier League now looked to have flattered to deceive.
Of course, the impartial observer can’t wait to see Pep Guardiola’s German side face the Spanish side he built up into the European Champions.
But that still leaves the English sides who are at the moment a yard short when they line up against the European elite.
And that doesn’t bode well for England’s chances in the World Cup later this year – or for the chances of any Premier League manager like David Moyes who is hoping to attract talent like Toni Kroos to a team that was once called Manchester United.

TEMPLATE REPORT: Barcelona teach Manchester City a lesson

TEMPLATE REPORT

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Etihad Stadium

MANCHESTER CITY 0 BARCELONA 2

Just how good and how far have Manchester City come this season – that was the question on everyone’s mind as the blues took on Lionel Messi and the highly rated and much respected side called Barcelona at the Etihad Stadium tonight.
In the first half, City had the best of the chances despite the dominance of Barcelona who played in the way that they have done so often, possession followed by more possession, wearing down the opposition through silky passes that called on the hometeam to chase after the ball.
In the second half though, the game was out of City’s reach once Messi had slotted in a penalty following an advance that reduced the Premier League’s most exciting side to ten men.
The second goal from Danni Alves in the 90th minute ensured that there would be no way back in the second leg of this tie.
Barcelona are virtually threw to the quarter finals and they had not even got out of first gear – remaining throughout the nintety three minutes compact, assured and ever dangerous when given a sniff of a chance.
City were taught a lesson today by a side that is used to success at the highest level. The team that has dazzled us all in the Premier League were outclassed in a game their opponents never looked like losing.
And still they will be many who will question whether Barcelona have what it takes to win this competition.

Dhaka 2014: What it means to be poor in the Modern World

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

First, it was the Koreans, or was it the Taiwanese,  who undercut everyone producing cheap goods for the rich global north.
They were followed by the growth story that was Indonesia, where branded goods were created in battery like conditions by human beings who were treated no better than hens laying eggs for supermarket chains.
And then came the Chinese miracle, where poor peasants worked endless hours in conditions that no one from the outside world was ever allowed to see, flooding western markets with ever cheaper goods.
Now, it’s the turn of Bangladesh,  the Third World nation that will go that much lower, push their desperately poor workers that much further to produce goods for brands like Lee Cooper, and the Arcadia owned BHS.
It’s a given that child labour is employed, its a given that the poor mainly women are expected to worked impossibly long hours to meet deadlines and targets set by companies who are answerable only to the shareholders, and who clearly turn a blind eye to Dickensian work conditions.
When a building called the Rana Plaza collapsed in Dacca, more than a thousand souls perished under the rubble. Like 9/11, it was a completely avoidable disaster, but unlike the attacks on the twin towers the world did not take action to find and punish the culprits.
Instead, things have largely continued as before,  as last night’s EXPOSURE programme on ITV showed. Sure, there have been closures and punishments, but it won’t do. It won’t do when weak women – often too tired or frightened to speak – are kicked for not standing straight by supervisors who think it’s their given right to mistreat workers because they have been set impossibly difficult deadlines by multi billion dollar companies who employ the cheapest possible labour through using middle men and fixers.
Bangladesh is proud of its textile industry and the chances are the ‘Made in Bangladesh’ label will be the most familiar one to anyone buying goods in the west – after of course that of China. No doubt in the future,  there will be another nation that will go that much lower, push their workers that much harder to meet ever tighter deadlines for the cheapest possible price. And it’s a state of affairs the ‘World’ does not seem able or willing to do anything about.

DO THE WINTER GAMES MEAN RUSSIA IS BACK?

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

The Winter games which are being held in Sochi next weekend, are the first Olympiad to be hosted in Russia since the Moscow Olympics of 1980.
On the surface, this is a clear statement from the Kremlin that Russia is back on the international stage as a Great Power.
The games are the most expensive in history – a staggering 50 billion dollars, some four times the budget of the highly controversial London games in 2012.
And the location within a stone’s throw of the unstable Caucasus is a signal to those intent on securing their freedom from Moscow that the issue is no longer under discussion.
What’s more, the Russia that President Vladimir Putin wants the world to see has taken ‘moral’ stands on a number of issues – gay rights, religious tolerance, even releasing political prisoners and naughty pop stars.
So, with a consuming Middle Class emerging in the former Communist empire has Russia turned a corner, has it left behind the chaos created by collapse of the Soviet Union?
Of course, all the progress made under the iron grip of the former FSB chief, is dependent on high oil prices, well above one hundred dollars a barrel, for other than that there is little else coming into the coffers to balance the books.
Under the Soviet Union, dependence on oil and gas exports accounted for 67 per cent of the budget, today it is 75 per cent with prices five times higher.
And as protests in the Ukraine and bomb attacks in the Caucasus have shown, any political stability in the Russian federation is tenous at best.
And it was not so long ago when Russian armed forces were being deployed in Georgia to sponsor the freedom of Abkhazia.
As a result, those who are claiming ‘Today Sochi, tomorrow the World’ may want to take a pause and look to the past for lessons.
When Soviet Union held the games in 1980, no one could have predicted its collapse some eight years later.
And yet all the ingredients that precipitated that huge geopolitical event are still there. Like the Soviet Union before it, ‘modern’ Russia is a third-world country with first-world military technologies that produces little other than caviar and vodka and that relies on extraction of gas, oil and minerals.
Scratch the shiny surface and bright lights of its capital Moscow and there’s little left to speak of.
So, Sochi may prove to be an expensive white elephant, one which a struggling economy can scarcely afford – and not a signal to the world that Russia is back

Three years on, what has been achieved in Egypt?

25 Saturday Jan 2014

Tags

Arab Spring, Egypt

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

If you looked at the scenes in Tahrer Square tonight, it would appear a great victory has been achieved in the Arab World’s most popular country.
Perhaps, a victory on par with that other achievement that Egypt’s armed forces claim as theirs – victory in the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
Sadly, that much heralded triumph is a big a mirage as the one being trumpeted today.
So far 29 people have lost their lives as Egypt falls apart because of the appallingly stupid actions of its armed forces, who in overthrowing a democratically elected government, banning the party that had won th country’s only democratic election, and imposing a new constititution, for which there was a 38.4 per cent turn out, have virtually guaranteed the break up of the state.
Three years ago today, protesters gathered in Tahrer Square to demand the end of military rule.
They succeeded in getting rid of the man at the top, but not the apparatus that had kept him power for some four decades.
And today, as a military man is poised to take the presidency in an ‘election’ that would have been recognised by Saddam Hussein of Iraq, one has to wonder what has really been achieved in Egypt.

The Taliban make a ‘comeback’

20 Monday Jan 2014

Afghanistan, America and Afghanistan, international news, Taliban

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

One attack on a hotel popular with foreigners and Afghans who have done well for themselves under the current administration of Hamid Karzai, was followed yesterday with a raid on an Afghan military base. Both attacks put a lie to any claims that the Taliban who have been very quite over the winter period were no longer a force to be reckoned with.

Whether the Taliban were finished or not, no one can really knows, however,  based in the ferocity of the fighting it is fair to assume that they can still call on volunteers who are prepared to fight to the death, which also means that those who are fighting for them believe in the cause they are fighting for.

Afghanistan under the US led alliance has seen little in terms of real change, the administration of Hamid Karzai has swallowed the bulk of the foreign aid that has come into the country, and whatever has trickled down to the rest of the country has not made any difference to the ordinary Afghan, whom the Taliban are calling upon to act as volunteers for their’ jihad.’

Afghanistan like the subsequent conflicts is proving to be a great lost opportunity for the outside world – as late as 2005, that is some four years into this war, the Taliban were struggling to find recruits to fight for them, that is because many Afghans genuinely believed that America would help rebuild their war ravaged country.

This year,  as the coalition prepares to leave, you will only find people glad to see the back of an army that has presided over a corrupt government that won a questionable election and that now resembles Rome under the Emperor Nero.

And what of the Taliban –  let’s hope they have learned from their own excesses when they were in power,  and to reaction they got when they were ousted.

If they haven’t, then Afghans may fighting once again to get rid of them.
