It’s the Economy Stupid!

28 Thursday Jul 2011

Austerity, Economy, UK

Who’d have thought it!

This country’s GDP grew by 0.2 per cent in the second quarter of this year.

That was considerably less than the 0.7 per cent projected growth forecast.

A variety of factors were blamed for this contraction – the Royal wedding, wasn’t that supposed to bring in money, the weather, there may be a point here the weather has been very testing to everyone, etc. News reports have carried different points of view from the inexperienced Chancellor of the Exequer to the equally inexperienced leader of the opposition.

This country is still generating a trillion pounds a year, something that hasn’t changed.

That means George Osbourne has not done anything wrong there, where the danger lies is in his plan to cut the deficit within the lifetime of this government – that will cause real long term damage.

Norway

Like a true coward, the mass murderer who brought carnage to the peace that is Norway gave himself up when confronted by a real army, one that could fight back.

These little Hitlers are legends in their own mind, the trouble is why doesn’t everyone else see what they know deep inside.

There is no need to know his name, just like there is no need to know the name of the man who harmed so many in London, almost a decade ago, the manΒ newspapersΒ called the nail bomber.

Like the man who shot John Lennon, they crave glory and it’s crucial ingredient, the oxygen that is publicity.

The Norwegian authorities got it right by denying this man a platform to voice his horrendous views.

Trouble is what can they do with him?

We live at a time when the words, talent and genius are so often used that they have lost their meaning.

Amy Winehouse was undeniably talented, the tragedy is that she did not stay around long enough to become a genius.

At 27 – what is it about that age, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and perhaps Ms Winehouse’s closest life style contemporary Janis Joplin – she was able to sell records world wide, she was a superstar, there was no need for any hype or heavy promotion her voice simply propelled in to that league.

How many people can we say that of today?

Talented people never know they are talented and as Ms Winehouse showed they can be extremely self destructive.

No one – but themselves – can stop them from harming themselves.

For that to happen, they need to accept that there is a problem.

Sadly, this 27-year-old could do not this and the world has nowΒ lostΒ oneΒ shining star.

So the phone hacking saga has claimed its first victim with the death of Sean Hoare, the journalist who firstΒ  said that his editor, Andy Coulson, had known of phone hacking going on at the News of World.

Shades of Dr David Kelly – perhaps.

During my travels, I was lucky enough to meet Sean, and probably like everyone, did not have a bad thing to say about him, he was that kind of bloke – down to earth, always have time for you. I wasn’t a friend so I could tell what was troubling him, but I suspect that he was suffering from that emptiness that those of who work in newspapers have often felt.

The longer you let it fester, the harder it is to overcome.

There will be those hardened hacks who will dismiss this as nonsense, however, if they are reallly honest, they know what journalists like Sean and Christopher Morgan of The Sunday Times went through everyday.

πŸ‘§ Meeting Hassan Banna’s Great Grand Daughter πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡¬

Hassan Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, helped Colonel Gamal Nasser overthrow the corrupt king of Egypt and in return for this action the new President put him into a concentration camp and then executed.

To this day, many say that Nasser was destined to fail because of that action.

Indeed, there are those who believe that the Six-Day War was an act of God.

So it was some disbelief and considerable astonishment to discoverΒ that a nine-year-old girl who walked into a newsroom that I was working atΒ was his great grand – daughter.

She had come with her father, and could not believe it when I told her that I did not know who he was.

She didn’t like being called munckin either, or princess for that matter.

Munckins, she told me, were little people, and as she spoke I felt like one of them.

In this world of nations, there are some people who are clearly a nation, but for various reasons are unable to live in a land that belongs to them.Β  Sometimes – as in South Sudan – there clearly isn’t a nation, however because of Great Power intervention you find their appearance, which is a shame because there are people who have suffered for decades fighting for the right to be free. So, yesterday’s announcement by the Arab League – which has suddenly become a force in international politics – that it will back the Palestinians in their fight to be recognised at the UN as a state is welcome news to those who have long believed that they have been appalling treated by first the UN who did not recognise that they lived on the land now called Israel and by the state itself which has used the symbols, traditions and history of the Jewish faith as a justification to massacre a defenceless civilian population. Β A single day does not go by in the so-called Occupied territories when there isn’t an incident involving the most powerful army in the Middle East and the people it has held captive in West bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem.Β  This has never been a fair fight,Β which the Palestinians – despite the defiance and rhetoric of Hamas – have ever been able to win, which makes the intransigence of the European Union all the more disgusting and the announcement by the Barack Hussain Obama that he would never allow a Palestinian state come into being that much more heart breaking. America has never been a fair broker in this conflict – it knows that – and Obama knows also that he has let down everyone who cried on the day he became the first Black President of the world’s most powerful nation.
